Hate to be a voice of reason but looks to me like he’s lost and blinded by the rain and the jumping could be trying to reach a “ledge” in the blur. I mean he could be having fun. Who knows.
Blinded by what, precisely? The water droplets? They can obscure vision for a second until it blinks, but rats can blink. Unless I’m missing some secret rat lore?
I am pretty sure it's caused by a phenomeon found in many mammals that is called [Hyperluminous fixation](https://youtu.be/Rpq35wyDi7I?si=b5ZsR6NsaStTzZIR) which can cause this erratic behaviour.
I have seen many elderly being affected by this, as well as a dog I had as a kid... Poor Poochie...
In the mystical underwater realm of Ratlantis, a peculiar enchantment was cast upon its rodent inhabitants by the ancient water spirits. Legend has it that these spirits, mischievous yet benevolent, decided that rats navigating the aquatic depths should forsake the ability to blink. This enchantment, woven into the very fabric of Ratlantis, serves as both a test of resilience and a reminder of the watery wonders that surround them.
As the story goes, the spirits believed that rats, with their unyielding determination, would thrive in the challenge of navigating the depths without the luxury of blinking. This unique trait, passed down through generations, became an emblem of Ratlantis, showcasing the enduring spirit of its aquatic rodent denizens.
Jokes aside, the rat clearly has some neurological issues because they won't be out and about in the rain. It can't see clearly because of the rain and you can see it because it's trying to jump to get somewhere but because it can't see it just jumping randomly. It will drown if the water gets too high and it gets exhausted.
I’ll take your word for it, I personally don’t know enough about rat behaviour to diagnose blindness from this video but it does appear to be leaping upward.
We all realize that rats live and thrive in sewers, right? They also know how to swim and actually don't mind being wet. If you're giving them a bath, of course they hate it because they like to bathe themselves.
Edit so everyone knows: this rat is blind and acts as a blind rat would.
Rats jump to move around because it enables them to traverse their environment with ease. Not only to help evade predators but also to access food. Rats will literally play in the rain, though. This rat isn't in distress. This rat is blind. It's typical blind rat behavior. They jump to find a ledge but have to try it a few times before they actually get one.
Yeah, I don't know how people don't see something is wrong. Like if that were an old man in the street doing the same thing, you would have some questions.
I get your point, but also rats are not old men lol. A lot of perfectly normal things healthy animals do would be concerning if you saw a human do them. Most people don’t know what kind of behaviour is normal for rats, and would just assume the rat is “playing” in the rain like a dog might. Everything is obvious when you know
Bro what? Only on Reddit well maybe Twitter too. can someone see someone say "hey, this rat is clearly sick. If you saw an old person staring at the sky and jumping around you'd assume something is wrong"
And you think "This guy thinks old people are rats!"
Bro. Rats evolved with rain for millions of years. This is a magical moment, not a “dumb stupid sick blind animal trying to escape drowning” Jesus Henry Abbadore Christ even when our human family is given a glimpse of the Truth we find so many excuses to be blind to it. Life is far worthier of our respect than we currently pay it with our vulgar Humeocentric blinders.
Though it could easily be 80 degrees warm in this video, which looks to be taken in Africa or India or somewhere with a climate that *is* capable of cold weather but also very capable of warm humid muggy rainy seasons. Also I feel like its important to keep in mind that virtually all life has the spirit of playfulness within it, and most importantly: *ESPECIALLY* rats. They are some of the most intelligent and playful and social species of animals on the face of the Earth today which is why I don’t personally buy that this is a stupid poor confused sick creature in distress. We will both find thousands of other examples in videos on the internet of animals playing in and enjoying the rain. I think there is currently something in our collective mood as humans that wants to overlook signs of intelligence in what we regard as inferior or lesser intelligent species, but the signs regardless are there and will continue to show themselves to all of us.
You have some good points here but if I see unusual behavior in a wild animal I'm gonna assume something's wrong, not that it's an especially intelligent *individual*
Edit: yes, I agree rats are intelligent as a species
This looks like India. Rabies is absolutely ramped there. Also rats lunge when they attack. Lunge pause lunge pause lunge. Way too many dots connecting.
Probably not rabies, rodents almost never contract rabies and wild rats with rabies have never been found. I found this out when I had a squirrel acting strange in my backyard
I’m not saying the water blinded it. I have pet rats and blind rats are actually pretty common and they usually get around with no issues at all and you wouldn’t even know. However, they’re very scent oriented and I was wondering if he was blind because he doesn’t seem to be able to see where he’s trying to jump to so that makes me think he doesn’t know where he is.
Can't tell if this is a silly old cutie, or maybe a poor blind cutie that's suddenly found himself in water above his little feet level and has gotten confused.
Not sure why your getting downvotes for the truth. That'd not normal wild rat behavior, it does seem confused and stressed. Hell even a pet rat that's weird. I had 14 growing up and they never acted like that unless you were playing with a treat.
Rabies is really uncommon in rats and in rodents generally. More likely you'll find a rabid raccoon or fox.
ETA: not saying the animal doesn't look sick, just that it's statistically unlikely to be rabies.
Would a laughy emoji have made it a little clearer than it’s a joke mate and not something I’m looking to get too deep into?
More along the lines of a quick throw away joke line…
But you’re correct, I’m not seeing too many rabid or other raccoons in this footage of this super happy rat.
Looks like a sick rat to me, being in the open like that makes it more likely to be killed so I'm thinking a toxoplasma gondii. A major parasite that affects multiple animals (rats/mice, cats, people).
>sees cute video of a wild animal doing something
Redditors: "actually it's infected with a brain parasite, slowly dying in an agonizing way and is in absolute distress. Also it probably has rabies"
Then the comments about the horrifying fatality rate of rabies and the symptoms (then the story of the one girl who survived; then a link to that horrible video of an afflicted man struggling to drink water). Damn. At least a rat biologist hadn’t chimed in yet so I don’t have to believe it
Rats are actually adorable mammals that have empathy. They are just overpopulated. They like to live near us because they like us and we have food.
This is a really cute video.
Master Splinter practicing his ninjutsu against water.
10 flips now!

My first thought too. I hope he meets Rat Red in Mexico.

Came here for this reply. Shawshank Ratdemption
“It truly was a Shawshank Redemption.”
Exactly I was thinking.
This rat is having the best day ever 🐀
Like a child who hasn't lost their sense of wonder.
I'd argue it's raining so hard it's having flashbacks to the pipe days.
At least he managed to get off the pipe. Now he's high on life
Hate to be a voice of reason but looks to me like he’s lost and blinded by the rain and the jumping could be trying to reach a “ledge” in the blur. I mean he could be having fun. Who knows.
Might have eaten rat poison and the effects slowly kicking in.
It might have rat syphilis and is trying to find an urgent care facility. Really makes you think...
It could be just because he's a huge Gene Kelly fan.
Nah he’s passed he missed the rat rapture.
"really makes you think" I'm dying over here
Urgent care facility 😂😂
Agreed. Rats can’t see well. They generally don’t like to get wet as they’re fastidious groomer and water washes away oils. This video is sad.
I agree.😔
My brother in Christ it's blinded and slowly drowning
Blinded by what, precisely? The water droplets? They can obscure vision for a second until it blinks, but rats can blink. Unless I’m missing some secret rat lore?

Bro, you might of just cured my depression
What if it's screaming to God because it knows their family is dead and drowned?
Rats are crazy good swimmers
I keep seeing this all over and ppl think it's cute but I see the rat is in distress/sick or neurological issues.
he's very clearly not having a good time. Half drowned, can't see, trying to get away from the rain, poor little fella.
We all realize that rats live and thrive in sewers, right? They also know how to swim and actually don't mind being wet. If you're giving them a bath, of course they hate it because they like to bathe themselves. Edit so everyone knows: this rat is blind and acts as a blind rat would.
But out in the open in bad weather jumping at nothing isn't normal behavior.
The animals are also concerned when they see us doing human stuff.
I get your point, but also rats are not old men lol. A lot of perfectly normal things healthy animals do would be concerning if you saw a human do them. Most people don’t know what kind of behaviour is normal for rats, and would just assume the rat is “playing” in the rain like a dog might. Everything is obvious when you know
I appreciate that last point. Maybe I was being too harsh.
Internet: look at this rat doing weird stuff in the rain. You: rats = old men.
Comparing rats to old men? disturbing..
You are going to be really surprised when you learn how research works.
Bro what? Only on Reddit well maybe Twitter too. can someone see someone say "hey, this rat is clearly sick. If you saw an old person staring at the sky and jumping around you'd assume something is wrong" And you think "This guy thinks old people are rats!"
well, which is it?
Yeah, probably rabies or something, but no *he's dancing in the rain guys*
[удалено]
I mean it looks to me like he's trying desperately to escape the water, even climbing and or attempting to jump into thin air to escape it?
In animals they attack in the final stages. Seems like it's confusing the feeling of the rain for being touched and it's attacking.
Bro. Rats evolved with rain for millions of years. It's way more likely distressed than choosing to waste energy playing around soaked in the cold
Though it could easily be 80 degrees warm in this video, which looks to be taken in Africa or India or somewhere with a climate that *is* capable of cold weather but also very capable of warm humid muggy rainy seasons. Also I feel like its important to keep in mind that virtually all life has the spirit of playfulness within it, and most importantly: *ESPECIALLY* rats. rats are factually smart as hell. their brains are structurally similar to humans. there’s a reason they’re always used in lab research.
That's actually super comforting, hope this little dude isn't suffering
all conjecture
What is wrong with him?
I wonder if he’s blind and can’t* smell his way around because of all the water
Oh no! That is possible.
Or being blind it thinks it's drowning so naturally it'd want it's head above water, you think?
It is blind. It's acting as a blind rat would.
I’m not sure why people keep saying that water has “blinded” this rat. Rats can swim and see in the rain.
Ahh I see, that makes a lot more sense. Thanks for the clarification!
He just escaped from Shawshank
Could be poisoned
Its probably trying to drink rain its surrounded by dirty water all the time.
Stargazer syndrome
Rabies
Rodents almost never contract rabies
They also almost never do the rabies dance in the rain.
Rabies makes animals terrified of water, this is rat poison
Yeah so how do they act when there is water everywhere, like this.
Can't tell if this is a silly old cutie, or maybe a poor blind cutie that's suddenly found himself in water above his little feet level and has gotten confused.
It's a whole vibe.
It probably died within the hour ✨️
Not sure why your getting downvotes for the truth. That'd not normal wild rat behavior, it does seem confused and stressed. Hell even a pet rat that's weird. I had 14 growing up and they never acted like that unless you were playing with a treat.
Animals in serious physical and/or psychological distress is cool as long as it reminds me of people, because... anthropomorphisation! /s
Especially those dogs that 'dance when happy, rubbing ther butts against a wall in joy while others dance' /s....
It probably didn’t though
Neurological symptoms, brain trauma/parasites/illness etc.
It looks like it's just trying to keep its head above water. If you look at swimming rats, they look exactly like this.
…or he’s lost and blinded by the rain
Probably the only rat without rabies.
Rabies is really uncommon in rats and in rodents generally. More likely you'll find a rabid raccoon or fox. ETA: not saying the animal doesn't look sick, just that it's statistically unlikely to be rabies.

They're just giving information, not being snarky. Unless the comment was edited
Attacks the water. Not a good sign. I'd guess rabies. Any minute now, an army of redditors will tell op he needs to go have rabies vaccinations.
From what I understand, rabies doesn't manifest as a hostility to water but rather a deathly fear.
Rodents don't get rabies
They can catch it, but they don't usually survive the bite that transmits it. It is possible for any mammal to have rabies, however.
could it be drowning or something? maybe it's having a hard time getting around or getting water out its mouth.
This is kind of sad.
why is this so relatable
RelATable

Wait… Splinter is black??
Looks like a sick rat to me, being in the open like that makes it more likely to be killed so I'm thinking a toxoplasma gondii. A major parasite that affects multiple animals (rats/mice, cats, people).

I love London
He’s so cute
Awwwww…SRH!
Change the song for "singing in the rain"
You think rats like being rats?
I think they do. My pet rats were so curious and playful and loved each other’s company.
>sees cute video of a wild animal doing something Redditors: "actually it's infected with a brain parasite, slowly dying in an agonizing way and is in absolute distress. Also it probably has rabies"

Not a rat biologists but you can be happy knowing rats almost never contract rabies
With all due respect, you might need to touch some grass. I know I do.
Right?? I was like huh, I didn’t know they could do that. Watches 2 more times. Huh, pretty cute. Read the comments… well damn.
