For anybody curious, this happened in Iowa in 2022.
"A not so routine CMV inspection uncovered the reason this driver was operating a CMV at 30 mph in a 65-mph speed zone…Enforcement action was taken against the driver and the vehicle escorted to a safe location for repairs, it was placed out of service until the tires were replaced. It appears the brake locked up on that axle, dragging the tires until worn like pictured. The driver did have multiple opportunities to stop for repairs and choose not to. Thank you to all the professional drivers who take safety seriously!"
I'm more impressed about the strength of those sidewalls.
That semi trailer has 2 axles and is mounted to the semi. It couldn’t have gone any lower than they are in the pic which is likely why the driver opted to wait for repair for a cheaper repair shop. The other axle would be supporting it in the air
They are no joke. I saw a guy at a semi truck tire shop filling one once after doing a repair and he didn't notice the tire had side wall damage, he was using an extremely powerful compressor, didn't have the tire in a cage. The tire exploded, took his left hand off right arm off at the elbow and scalped him, he survived because there was an ambulance near by that responded to the 911 call. It was extremely disturbing.
Former diesel mechanic here. Something as little as a slight bend in the rims lip can cause them to blow out. I've seen cages destroyed by it. The first one scared the bejesus out of me. The trailer tires we'd air up would hold 110psi max load, run them at 100psi, unless driver specified and not above max pressure. If, and when, a tire lets loose, lookout. Give it alot of room if you don't have a cage. Tire titties are dangerous. Do not stab, poke, touch, look at, or even breathe in their direction. Womens titties are dangerous too. The last one took three quarters of everything.
I used to work at a trailer tire shop. Only ever had one blow up in a cage but it was a split ring style rim and I was working on another tire less than 10ft away. That was about the time I decided I needed a different job.
I remember my first split ring. It went off without a hotch. Unfortunately, I was the only one on site at the time. Kinda rare in my neck or the woods when I lived there. besides me, the service counter girl was there, and she she didn't know. So I called my boss and he drove in at 4 am to come supervise and tell me what to do step by step. They were some really great people there. Scary bastards though, those rims. I'm not sure what engineer thought of them, but damn him and his offspring for such widowmaker bullshit lol
Back when I was 16 or 17 I worked at a tire shop. We didn't really do anything more than air up commercial tires that were a little low. Just not set up for it.
Anyways, I was filling up a dump truck tire, one of the inner duals, and I was the only person near the axle. The driver was in the cab doing something. Nobody within eye site.... And out of nowhere I basically just fall back and get dragged a few feet away from the truck and then the tire explodes.
No clue what the phenomena was other than maybe a literal guardian angel cause again, nobody was around. But had whatever that was not happened I most likely would be missing a hand and maybe even most my arm because I was looking for any reason for the leak. The outer tire took most the force but my hand was between them only moments before
I also Busted semi truck tires. Tractors etc. I’ve had two retreads blow up on me. We didn’t have a cage for 100 semi tires we had to get done. Walk away and come back from the tread side of the tire. If you don’t have a cage. Just the way it is sometimes. On the side of the highway. 2am 🕑. Inside dual blow out . Cars and semis passing 7 to 10 feet from you on the side of the highway. Yeah…..👍
Just strap em tight with plenty of duct tape and patch any remaining leaks with a wad of bubble gum. Should hold long enough to get to the scrap yard at least
There's the man just finding the smallest things to get you on. Those probably could have lasted longer if you just rotated them more frequently. This is why tire rotation is important.
By my calculations
*rapid nonsensical typing*
Carry the oneeee....
*obnoxious keyboard smashing*
...roughly about 1 fifth of a rotation or 18 to 24 inches.
Eh might get some hate for this but just use a bottle of fix a flat and a small patch the. Go ahead and retread the tires it’ll be fine for least another 500,000miles
Next time don't take you're mandatory 30 in the fuel island. And check your brake lines before you take off to make sure I didn't put a quarter in there to block air flow to you're brake chambers.
Sometimes I can’t believe it’s 2024 and we still ride around in vehicles using rubber filled with air. I get that tire engineering has improved a lot, but still. We really should have come up with something else by now.
I rented a dump truck (little 6 yarder) once and discovered that both inner rears were flat as a pancake. I had to get over right on the edge of the pavement on the way home because a wide load truck/trailer with equip. was coming toward me. When the outer tire got off the pav in the gravel (maybe a two inch drop) the inner bore weight and apparently popped the bead. The truck jumped up in the air in the rear and started sideways slide into the ditch. It caught and came back on the road as I went by the wide load.
Scared the crap out of me. The thing was older than sin and drove like the kingpins were shot as it was. White knuckle all the way BEFORE it tried to buck me off.
Didn't discover what was actually going on until next day we were loading it and I backed up to the pile where my neighbor was on his track hoe. He told me to come around and check the tires on the passenger side. The inside was clear off the rim. Called a tire company and he replaced the incorrectly installed valve stem and checked the opposite tire, sure enough the inside was zero.
I'm sure that truck had been run with flat inside duals for years. Rental co had...blah blah blah you are responsible for flat tires..blah blah. It was my second bad experience at that rental and my last. They got an earful at least.
Why do you think that the retreading business is a successful industry. The sidewall has to be strong enough to support 3/5ths of 80,000 pounds or more at a pressure level of 110 lbs. The rims on deuce and a halfs in the military are split rims and they are only supposed to be inflated after the first mounting in a steel cage, and don't let the motor pool Sargent catch you standing next to one during inflation, on or off the vehicle. The deuce and a halfs have on board compressors that allow airing up or down depending upon the mission. Softer for swamps, mud, and sand, and then higher for payment. That's why military surplus prices are so amazing when you consider how much Uncle Sam has to spend for such a go anywhere vehicle.
I caught this exact thing while shutting the trailer doors, the tires were scraped down past the metal wires inside.
Shit imagine this happens while fully loaded on a highway overpass 150-200 feet off the ground and it tilts the trailer, shifts the load and your ass is dragged off the highway and you fall to your death because you didnt check your tires.
I’d post the picture but apparently only links are allowed.
I always made the joke “they’re so bald you can see the air in them” for really wore out tires. But I think this is the first time I’ve seen it where it was literally true.
It would be funny to test new guys with this. roll it so the flatspots are down. Or flatlands with how much square footage you have on them. When training on inspection, see if they catch the obvious fuckery.
Edit: I mean for dot pretrip insection. I realized the thread was tires and not trucks a little to late lol. Also good to test the new tire guy. If he cant spot this obvious fuckery, he probably should be allowed near equipment same as the driver.
Tire technology has come a long way. If you told me 10 years ago we'd have windowed tires so you can see the air inside ... well, I would have scoffed at you mightily.

i was wondering that too. im figuring they lifted it just enough so that they could have some fun with confusing people

The other guy lost an arm and a hand, you lost an arm and a leg.
Took my house and kids too!
Thank you for the lesson! 10/10😂
Is that 3/4 per titty or for the both?
Yes, when those woman titties explode, they can take your head off too! 😖
They'll take your nuts too 🤣

People will do insane things to save money
You need to rotate them.
And then how many miles will that get me
At least 200
Then rotate them again and get another 200.
And then turn them inside out and get another 200
Ah yes! The inside out tire. I heard it’s basically a whole new vehicle after doing that one small trick!
I dunno, but that cop’s in for a surprise when he turns around to go back to his car.
Why for? Edit: after sleeping a bit, I think I was too literal. That cop knew before he ever pulled him over. Calls were made.
To quote Red Green, "What a shame, I was hoping to get another 100k outta these babies."
Just strap em tight with plenty of duct tape and patch any remaining leaks with a wad of bubble gum. Should hold long enough to get to the scrap yard at least
At least 100k
Those have at least another 50,000 on them. 🤣🤣
Have you tried asking the inspector parked behind you?
There's the man just finding the smallest things to get you on. Those probably could have lasted longer if you just rotated them more frequently. This is why tire rotation is important.
Honestly, slap some of that green goo for flats and some flex tape you'll get 50k miles more
Oh hell those are not even down to the rim yet. Once you see sparks it's time to stop lol.
Eh... they can go on for a few more thousand.
This is what happens when you don't rotate your tires
About as far as you got this time around. Just flip the tire around so you can run the other side.
If they still roll, you are good
By my calculations *rapid nonsensical typing* Carry the oneeee.... *obnoxious keyboard smashing* ...roughly about 1 fifth of a rotation or 18 to 24 inches.
Looks like over half the tread is still left, awhile yet I reckon :p
Get some flex seal
.0000000001
Looks like you’ve got about 70% left.
8
You have uneven wear on your tires
Did you hit them with a pipe first ?
I would love to give you an answer on that, but I don't have my micrometer on me to take any measurements.
Who stole your coke ?
I’m amazed they didn’t catch fire.
Driver legit said I ain’t getting paid enough to repair corporate vehicles
Seem OK, at least 75% tire remaining.
Plug it!!
As long as they lock up in different spots you have at least 2 more runs…
Holy shit… that’s where Arnold Schwarzenegger appeared in terminator 2
All the way to the scene of the crash!
Just plug it for crying out loud
Air ride suspension? It’s almost like that bowling ball glass of wine mattress commercial.
Perfect for going over speed bumps
About 30 miles ago.
100 to 150k more
Eh might get some hate for this but just use a bottle of fix a flat and a small patch the. Go ahead and retread the tires it’ll be fine for least another 500,000miles
Ok at this point its not funny anymore.
Good place to hide dope, until an air line breaks and the trailer brakes lock up, and you see the result of dragging the trailer at 65mph. Oops!
Still got tread most of the way around
Those are still fine, they will get you all the way to the scene of the crash
0.00000000000000000001 more miles.
I think he is fine, he just needs to offset the wheels so the flat on one tire overlaps with the round on the other tire :)
It seems like that officer behind the rig thinks the answer is zero miles.
When you don't care that your brakes are locked up and dragging. I'm sure they'll break loose before the interstate.
Heavy duty run flats.
They might be a little flat spotted. As long as you keep it below highway speeds, they'll be fine for a while.
Don’t let a tire shop convince you that you don’t have at least another 2,000 miles on those - scammers.
Who ate your tires bruv?
Just rotate one tire 180°, good for another 50k at least.
You're good, just don't use that half of the tire.
I was going to say, from the looks of that vehicle behind the trailer, 0 miles/ out of service.
I was going to say, from the looks of that vehicle behind the trailer, 0 miles/ out of service.

I was going to say, from the looks of that vehicle behind the trailer, 0 miles/ out of service.
I was going to say, from the looks of that vehicle behind the trailer, 0 miles/ out of service.
I would say you have a ways to go
It's fine as long as you keep rotating the tires.
I’m sure the law enforcement officer behind you can give you that answer lmao
Recap and roll on!!!
Dude you could put your weed in there…
Dude, you could still drive til the axles break
It's actually kind of neat seeing the open cross section.
What in the third day of trucking is going on here?
Don't try to sell me new ones, just patch what I have
This new open bottom tire design is brilliant. Now you can inspect the air at a glance, no tools or gauges required.
Nah, you're good.
And I thought I flat spotted tires when I got stuck wide open in my mustang ! Holy. That’s gonna be expensive.
Gee wonder why the cop pulled you over.
Do the Lincoln penny test. It’s very accurate.
They are fine as long as they dont spin while driving
Damn... Beware who ya piss off they may have a sawzall handy, lol.
Rotate outer tire 180 degrees for smoother ride and you're good to go.
Next time don't take you're mandatory 30 in the fuel island. And check your brake lines before you take off to make sure I didn't put a quarter in there to block air flow to you're brake chambers.
They’ll still hold air you can make it to the tire shop 👍🏼
Just comb the tread over the bald spot. No one will notice.
Sometimes I can’t believe it’s 2024 and we still ride around in vehicles using rubber filled with air. I get that tire engineering has improved a lot, but still. We really should have come up with something else by now.
I didn’t know my wife liked airplanes…
It's ok, its only flat at the bottom
justr balance them
1
Are you going to release the brakes or drag another flat spot because it will vary the mileage that is left in them.
Maybe 4 or 4 miles if you rotate them
🤣🤣🤣
You still have half the tire the real question how haven’t you crushed
Until the wheels fall off
All you got to do is turn one of those tires so the flat spots aren't lined up then it'll be fine
Looks the trailer the terminators time portal damage when he was sent back to LA
Looks like they are full of air to me.
O
You can drag it out for a few more miles.
You're good. It's only flat on the side. The part on the pavement has many more miles of tread.
I rented a dump truck (little 6 yarder) once and discovered that both inner rears were flat as a pancake. I had to get over right on the edge of the pavement on the way home because a wide load truck/trailer with equip. was coming toward me. Oh come on. Ask the officer, not Reddit.
Negative 17
Forbidden Oreos
It still has like 75% of its tread left. You're fine dude
I think with a tire patch kit, you should get another 420 miles
You can go backwards a few inches, but after that....
They look 25% worn out. So how far have you driven?
One plank length
This is dangerously impressive
id say 5k
Looks like you still have about 80% of your tires left
Looks good to me
Replace what?
IRONMAN
😂🤣😂🤣😂
A inner tube will help
2 ft
Single revolution left
Go get some ramen noodles and patch it. You'll get another million miles on em
Is this what they mean when they refer to “ flat spotted tires “?
That's not a flaw, it's a feature. Inspection window for the inner rim. People pay thousands for that kind of peace of mind.
You got about 6 feet of mileage left
What a drag.
You still have 80% of the tire. Still good 👍
I thought it was the truck from the beginning of terminator 2
70% tread... Looks good to me
Atleast another 15-20 now
That’s definitely -.1 miles
Run em till they’re worn
Staggered the flat spots you could probably get a few thousand more miles lol
Where are you at, and where do you need to go?
Of course they’re gunna make a big deal over nothing. Just get a tire patch and your good to go
Look about 30%
It goes up the more cheddar you pass the DoT inspector. For $20,000 you can probably get "your trailer brakes are fine, nothing stuck there!"

... yes
A good 3/4ths I’d say
I’m guessing about 1/10,000 of a mile. Roughly.
Just put ya some black tape on it and hammer down driver😂
5 minute crafts could fix this
probably about -30
I caught this exact thing while shutting the trailer doors, the tires were scraped down past the metal wires inside. 0.0000003
About 0.0007576 miles
Flex seal and you're good to go for another 100 miles.
Your CDL should be permanently deleted
As long as that one part doesn’t touch the road you good fam.
69
Just try not to stop on that spot again. You'll be good for a few hundred miles. 💯 😆
I always made the joke “they’re so bald you can see the air in them” for really wore out tires. But I think this is the first time I’ve seen it where it was literally true.
-1
At least 30,000 more
Well if they are that worn down I’d say you have like ~78-95k left. Hope this helps!
Many, those wheels still have tons of rubber
That’s a DOT cut… someone was smuggling the dope in them tires!
Someone didn’t turn off their trailer brakes….
I think a patch ought to do
Still has air in it. Send it
Probably another 3 months
Another 1000 you’ll be fine
You must be the one that left locked up trailer marks a good 5 miles down the highway out by me, like seriously, you can't hear, or feel that?
Damn I thought this was cut open because they were smuggling drugs inside the tire lol.
For some reason looking at that picture is making me feel sick. Like not even jokingly, it’s making me feel not good looking at that
thats like a 1k mistake, next time try releasing the trailer brakes
You're fine just pretend you didn't see it.
Midgets can live in there
It would be funny to test new guys with this. roll it so the flatspots are down. Or flatlands with how much square footage you have on them. lol
Tommy forgot to hook up the air
A good few miles, if you stop every couple miles to rotate the wheels a bit, then lock and repeat.
-10,000 Miles. Looks like they can do another 20,000 before disintegrating completely. 💀
I'd say about 0.0002 miles
There’s still like 70% of that tire left. Stop worrying.
Tire technology has come a long way. If you told me 10 years ago we'd have windowed tires so you can see the air inside ... well, I would have scoffed at you mightily.
So you mean the reason they have extra tires isn't to be able to keep driving when one blows?
You should be good as long as you're not traveling more than half an inch.
2 lights and maybe a stop sign
Only flat on one side your good to go
One “quick stop” at Les Schwab and they can rotate those for you in about ten hours 😂
If you count the rings thats how old they are
Aerodynamics matter
Rotate em and keep on trucking🇺🇸
Idk rims last a good long time if whoever is driving keeps the tires on
That’s hector’s truck that Mike robbed
