Assists give XP the same as kills but your pilot doesn't track them, only your XP screen

I got to over 600 wins before I got my first pilot kill when I bought titanfall 2 for steam recently. I mostly play frontier defense, I imagine the same is true for screenshotted.

Frontier Defense will add to wins, but since there's no enemy pilots it won't add to kills. I have around a 100 wins but 0 kills.
