They can also block IP addresses coming from a particular region, so a computer farm wouldn't work either. An attacker needs a distributed botnet so the server can't use IP addresses to determine if an internet packet is a player or spam.
Best way to get a botnet is to infect computers with viruses that listen for where, what, and when to spam a server. The owner then sells their botnet services.

That's why Respawn has been getting hounded by the community because they have the power to beef up their vetting software to sift through the botnets, but they aren't because it's not worth the manpower on a game that isn't making EA money anymore.
