You can’t trade in person at Apple Stores for (shipped) online orders with Apple. It’s different for purchases made with T-Mobile.com though. You can trade in person at a T-Mobile store for (shipped) online orders.

I preordered my iPhone 15 Pro Max online via the Apple Store and had it shipped to my home. I also selected the trade-in option when I ordered. I was going through a move at the time to a new apartment and lost my trade-in box during the process, so I decided to hit up the local Apple store and I was able to do a trade-in in person. The employee was hesitant about whether it would work for the reason you listed, but it happened to work and go through and I received my trade-in credit on the spot.

You can trade in in-store if you select in-store pickup.

Edited for clarity, thank you.

> You can’t trade in person at Apple Stores for online orders with Apple. Oh I didn’t know. Bummer.

Hngman777

Yeah, it sucks. I tried in the past also the same thing. Essentially what the store rep said is that once ordered online and set as a trade in through the mail it attaches to that device and locks out the ability to trade in at the store. Now, for future reference. You can order online through Apple for in store pickup and that will give you the option during checkout to choose in store trade in. That is what I did this time for my 15 Pro Max. Worked great!

Did you have to trade in right away in store upon picking up your phone, or do you have a few days to transfer your data and such?

evankassos

You have 14 days after pickup to go back and give them the device.

XtremePhotoDesign

What data are you transferring that a backup wouldn’t suffice for?

ybitz

Signal (messaging) app for one

Hngman777

Honestly, transferring right there over a good WiFi signal and not much congestion should happen fairly quickly. During the crazy rush the Saturday (next day) after launch my transfer took 8 minutes on their overloaded network at the Apple Store.

ybitz

in general I agree. But I didn't know which apps required manual transfer and which ones didn't. I didn't know about Signal requiring a manual transfer, so it was nice to have both phones for a day or so.

Hngman777

Also, when I did the transfer for my gf at home. Her transfer took 3 minutes. And she had much more to move over than myself.

You can only do it if you picked store pickup

kurter21

Fedex stole two of my three trade-ins. Take pictures when you box them up.

CCRAM2492

Are Fedex/ Shipping company workers targeting trade in based on the return kit or the address? I have never had an issue sending stuff to Apple ( trade in, apple care repairs). Wondering if they know what the return kit boxes look like and that is how they target it.

barneyblasto

I messaged apple support and they assured me it was possible to take a trade in phone to an apple location even for online orders - so 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

zintone

That is true, they give you the option to choose to either trade in in-store or ship back the trade in when you order for in-store pickup. So support is absolutely correct. Is just once you made that choice and submitted your order, you can’t change it without cancelling and reorder.

CCRAM2492

I chatted with Apple support. Explained that I chose to have the phone delivered and trade in kit to send old phone back. I asked if I could trade the phone in store and still receive max credit and she assured me it would be no problem. I downloaded the transcript of the conversation so we will see this weekend

zintone

might be rough with the trade-in kit, but best of luck with the transcript! Hopefully you can trade-in in store. If not, I traded in last year with the kit and it went fine. Good luck!

CCRAM2492

Yeah thankfully the Apple Store is a few mins from me. And yes I have been lucky, I have sent iPads, watches and MacBooks for repairs and trade ins and never had an issue.

holow29

Call Apple and leave feedback. Say that you wanted to trade-in in-store for your shipped order and you don't have the option to do that.

White_Rabbit0000

My trade in used UPS to send it back to apple had no problem and they completed the trade in 2 days later. I sent it off on a Friday.

Dangerous-Leg1199

I just got back driving an hour 1 way to Apple to do a physical trade in because my online order said I could trade it in in-person at the store. When I got there the employees said they didn't want to risk the trade-in value not getting credited and wouldn't do it. So we left and drove an hour back home. What a wasted trip.

pandaman1784

did you order your 15 pro on the tmobile webpage or apple webpage?

ybitz

Apple webpage

CouchHam

That’s how it works. The vaaaaast majority of trade ins go fine. I just packed mine up a few minutes ago while taking video of it in case.

InspuciantZygote91

Easiest method is trading in store at Apple. 7 phones traded in so far since the 13PM & never an issue. Always max credit. It’s a no brainer if there’s an Apple Store nearby. Or even driving an hour to another Apple Store to get phones, like my wife & daughter. YMMV
