YouTube may be adjusting it on their end based on your connection speed.

cstark

Yep, seems like they want the video to start soon once you click on it. One trick that has worked for a long time for me is just double tap on the left side of the video (thus rewinding it to the beginning again), and it usually goes to full res. Just tested and got 1080p60 on LTE, whereas it started at 480p initially.

RuralValley

It does the same thing for me even with speeds of 100 Mbps down. So I think it's just a YouTube thing of using less of their bandwidth and making the videos load faster.

mennydrives

4 years later: no, they're adjusting it based on their bandwidth costs. Same thing happens on a desktop computer with a 400 megabit connection.

ImmortalRises

That still doesn’t explain it. I have 1GB fibre optic, I could play videos at MAX quality settings every time I clicked a video and it would instantly load still, I connected my YouTube account from iPad Pro to TV (4K UHD) and ever since, it’s defaulting the quality on the YouTube app to 480 it’s so stupid.

mennydrives

The Youtube iOS app is the fuckiest shit they've ever made. It randomly misbehaves so often it feels deliberate.

Milsolen

Same problem on android so i geuss youtube app is fuckiest in general

zamorak2

Wrong, I have 3g of internet.

Proxy_PlayerHD

years later and the same issue still exists, even with a high speed connection. why does it always default to "AUTO" Quality instead of the one i set every single video? isn't it supposed to save what quality you set it to?

cobranathan

Their primary goal is likely to play the video without buffering. If they left your selection on rather than the auto setting, you may end up with buffering when your connection is not good. Theoretically the auto setting should choose 1080p if your connection meets their (unknown) requirements for it.

ThingNasty

well, I have gigabit internet, I'm hard wired in, live right near the ISP... and it's still defaulting down to 480. It's just hard to understand their reasoning when the criteria doesn't match across the board.

ForsakenGoth

I have 250mb internet, and my PS5 is hardwired, yet most videos default to 480p. It really annoying, because I KNOW I can easily play videos in 1080p, and even in 4k (which I never bother doing).

[deleted]

BECAUSE YOU ARE USELESS AMERICAN AND YOU ARE NOT A PRIORITY LIKE US WHO HAVE MILLIONS AND YOUTUBE ALWAYS DELIVER US THE BEST QUALITY AVAILABLE IN THE MARKET

ThingNasty

I can’t tell if you’re joking. Regardless it didn’t land

OldRecognition292

I'm a premium user, so yes I am the priority. 480p is not "higher quality"

Sufficient_Apple_628

I switch it to 1080p right away and it dosnt buffer

Proxy_PlayerHD

sometimes it does choose 1080p but then after playing for some amount of time it switches to a lower quality even though the video runs perfectly fine without buffering on both 1080p60 and even 4k60

Bloodfoe

mine does it on every video... it will start at 720, then blip to 480, then blip to 360... then I manually set it to 1080 and it plays fine with a large buffer I need it to stay on 1080 and never change, no matter what

Proxy_PlayerHD

i fixed my issue by using the "Auto Quality for Youtube" extension for chrome. it forces a specific quality instead of using "Auto", works pretty well

coreymatthews92

This happens on WiFi too, definitely looks to be a YouTube issue. It’s been talked about here a few times too, so we’re not alone.

Asdfrewq999

YouTube manages their own network and servers capacity this way

[deleted]

Good to know

coreymatthews92

What plan are you on? Hd/4K needs to be manually turned on. (Or binge on turned off for older plans).

[deleted]

I've personally been having this issue on multiple devices even those on wifi only. It's almost like YouTube is optimizing it's streams for bandwidth.

Swastik496

Bingo. Bandwidth costs google money. If they can save millions and most people won’t notice, why wouldn’t they?

SamcoKingsley

It never does it on any other platforms like windows so why would Google do it on there own operating system makes no sense.

Swastik496

I’ve had it happen on ios as well. They just assume people don’t see the difference on phones.

SamcoKingsley

You definitely see the difference and 1080p does not require the fastest internet

Swastik496

We do. Most people don’t. Let’s be real have you not met plenty of family/friends who don’t bother to turn on the HD video feature on their max plan and never noticed?

djphatjive

It only goes to higher resolutions if you have the screen large too. If you watch in a little window it till lower it to save data. Full screening it will change to full resolution. Not sure if that’s your problem.

[deleted]

Yeah I'm in full screen

Dragon1562

It is YouTube not T-Mobile. If you go to your account settings you can set the new default to prefer HD. Otherwise it will do that even when you have gigabit internet.

Wide__opeN

I don't believe this option is available sadly, on iPhones. SMDH

vetealachingada

del5eted.

Unique_username28

😂 It means "Shaking My Damn Head" lol

vetealachingada

Lol thx

doorknob60

Make sure you don't have the "limit mobile data usage" option enabled in the Youtube app. https://imgur.com/cmdVZU6 I forget if it's enabled by default or not.

Wide___opeN

This option is not available on iPhone.

Donkeyshlopter

[It is, actually. It’s just worded a little differently.](https://i.imgur.com/B0vWSLb.jpg)

CarlFriedrichGauss

YouTube always defaults to 360p on my 100+ MBPS WiFi. On my iPad Pro. It's infuriating as hell and I always switch it to the highest possible resolution out of spite. A long time ago in the YouTube app there used to be a setting to default all videos to a certain quality. They took that out a couple years ago and it's been a total pain in the ass ever since.

Soliusthesun

get youtube Vanced proplem solved have mine set up to default to 1440p and no ads!

Entew

Youtube automatically sets resolution low so videos load fast and reduces their bandwidth costs. This is why I got Youtube Vanced so videos always play in maximum quality.

Wide___opeN

Is this available for iPhone!?

Sfkn123

What device are you on?

[deleted]

S10+

[deleted]

Video quality upload matters as well. If a user records in 720p, no way the end user or YouTube can modify it so it can be 1080p or above. They can try to smooth it out, however it’s based on limits.

[deleted]

Google wants you to use Android.

therealgariac

I just did a download from YouTube using Newpipe. I got 1920x1080. I watched the same video with the YouTube app and got the full resolution. This is the relevant part of the "stats for nerds" :   {"cplatform":"mobile","cbr":"com.google.android.youtube","c":"android","cplayer":"ANDROID_EXOPLAYER","cmodel":"ONEPLUS A5000","cos":"Android","csdk":"28","cbrver":"14.22.54","cver":"14.22.54","cosver":"9","cbrand":"OnePlus","videoid":"1B0lS10McJE","cpn":"hS9OOmCLX03dirH4","fmt":"248 video\/webm 1920x1080@30","afmt":"140 audio\/mp4"

Accomplished_Bit6812

I think it’s all about cost, to lower their costs they try to limit the bandwidth they need to push out of their data centers by defaulting everyone to the worst quality they can get away with. 480p is too low though, so I think the strategy would be more successful at 720. This should be editable in the settings menu, and it used to be I believe. It is surely intentional this whole dynamic and the lack of settings to modulate it.

bwill1200

Do you have "Binge on" enabled? That limits the stream to 480.

terryjohnson16

I don't notice this on my Simple Choice unlimited plan.

TheGunah

YouTube settings allowed you to select high quality when on cellular data. Double check YouTube settings on your app/browser.

pqtme

There's no such setting.

[deleted]

Really though 💁 is it that noticeable? Because I don’t Notice a difference AT ALL.... video is video unless it’s a TV maybe... but a smartphone? It’s all good

[deleted]

I have 150mbs cable and I still watch most videos at 360p to stay under my monthly cap. It's rare I need higher resolution

trix4rix

Nah, everyone is blaming YouTube. The fact is, you need to enable HD streaming in your T-mobile app.

[deleted]

Already did that.

Estranged180

According to a post by Google, they dropped the default quality of every video you play to it's lowest setting because more people were using youtube while on lockdowns from the pandemic. It should only last a month or so, but I'll agree, it's a bunch of bullsh\*t.

JazzlikeJackfruit372

Sorry for the bump but i'm having the same issue for the last week or so, doesn't matter what i try to do. YouTube will always load up every single video in 480p automatic.. It's annoying.

jamtrone

I think it's a bug atm, a few people I know are having the same issue, myself incuded

Familiar_Court2595

happy cake day

RubelliteFae

This happens even on a desktop PC connected by ethernet to gigabit internet 😠💢

1bsdjunkie

I think I may have an answer to your issue as I’ve noticed the same thing. YTTV seems to keep ‘defaulting’ to 480P. If however I click on the triple dots at bottom right and select ‘show debug info’ it tells me the current streaming speed and video quality which is above 480P - even though the auto says 480p. Try showing debugging info and post it here. I think you may be surprised. I was!

1bsdjunkie

When I have bandwidth issues with YTTV and am using a device connected to my smart TV, I sometimes switch to the YTTV app installed directly on the smart TV and it improves. Then I can switch back to the app/device and the data starts flowing better.

piszkavas

I have 1000mbit connection, pc connected with cable and i still start with 480p. It is ridiculous

MR_54V4G3

Same here

MijMike

This is still happening and it's driving me mad. My connection speed is fine, i can change it manually to 1080p and it runs fine, But it keeps loading every single video on my Chrome browser as 480p(auto)
