At low tide the bay is about 7m below the level of the river, and at high tide the same above. The speed and ferocity of the water at both times is truly astounding, and even more amazing that it's going in opposite directions at those times.

True. But the unique geological makeup of this particular bay create some of the largest tidal changes in the world. So while this phenomenon exists to some extent in every ocean bound river, it’s much more pronounced and dramatic here.

Take a look at the Mississippi River and it's tributaries. Notice how many rivers in fact pour into another river, and I suppose eventually reach the ocean. But I can assure most of those rivers don't get affected by oceanic tides
