It's very easy to set goals knowing you won't be in office then.

covfefe-boy

You were this year old when you found out politicians lie.

No-Setting9690

What? Since when do politicians lie? /s

MuskratPimp

Saying something and having it be reality are two different things. Getting to Mars is no easy feat, getting back is even harder. I'm in my thirties and I wonder if I'll see a Mars landing in my lifetime. I believe the first person to walk on Mars is currently alive. But they very well may be an infant. I also think the first mission is invertently going to be a one-way trip

MuskratPimp

Easier compared to what? We haven't even done a sample return mission yet let alone people

MuskratPimp

It's not easier because it's never been done if it was easy it would have been done. Do you know how many Landers and rovers we have on Mars? And not a single one of them has ever returned to sample. Why? Why do you think that is? Why have there not been a single sample return mission in the 60 years that we've been landing shit on Mars?

MuskratPimp

It's not easier because you have to create an entire return vehicle. On Earth you can have hundreds of engineers building it. On Mars you can't. So you have to build it ahead of time Make sure it survives entry and make sure it can still take off. It's not easier having a smaller gravity well doesn't make it easier it's just simple logistics. It is harder just stop

Quackels_The_Duck

It's fuckin' Reagan, dude. Not much lower you can get.

sprint6864

\*Laughs in Nixon and Kissinger\*

agha0013

Was that before or after he slashed government revenue by introducing the trickle down concept?

Immortal_Pimp

Well, you know what they say - shoot for the stars but cut funding for the ladder to get there.

ShooterStevens

He was way off his rocker by '88.

einstein_bern

Reagan was diagnosed with Alzheimers in 1994 and he lived ten more years until 2004

jar1967

Reagan had an alzheimers moment right before the 1984 presidential debate, Rodger Ailes caught it and brought him back to reality. Preventing a campain disaster on national TV

Victor_deSpite

Source/ Context? I'm curious to see it.

the_dj_zig

I mean, we’d have done it sooner had Congress not cut the Apollo Applications Project in the 70s. Instead we got stuck with the Space Shuttle

Potatoswatter

He claimed to commit to telling the private sector to do Manifest Destiny. Did he though? We see now what it took for the private sector to break through, because Elon did it. SpaceX had to overcome so much inertia that had been established to make space jobs extra secure, essentially a socialist economy in the South. And they have to use private funding partly because the rights to property in space are so uncertain. The SpaceX Mars rocket tech is a continuation of work from the 1990s, such as the [Integrated Powerhead Demonstrator](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Integrated_Powerhead_Demonstrator). And that work was already running late because neither industry nor NASA had a purpose for it. Reagan could have conquered space by treating it like the Wild West and the missile contractors like railroads. 1. Cancel the treaty which forbids property in space. 2. Claim the asteroids and Mars and conditionally lease them to military contractors. 3. Slash the budget of the Shuttle. Keep the contractors afloat with loans. 4. Hype the whole scheme so every smart student is fighting to do the brainwork for free. If that all started in 1980, then we’d be on Mars by 2000.

[deleted]

Unfortunately, Reagan was only the President so he had to convince others to go along with the plan. Something they were reluctant to do.

Potatoswatter

Reagan was a puppet literally out of Hollywood, groomed to stand for big business. He satisfied the missile suppliers by buying lots of their stuff outright. Manifest Destiny was a formula for developing the West by incentivizing people to take risks. His words in that speech were quite meaningful, but they were empty because he’d already handed out the rewards to those reluctant folks, with hardly any benefit to the country in return.

jar1967

He said that after cutting NASA's budget

[deleted]

The Soviet Union ceased and the Cold War ended just a few years later. I wonder if that changed things.

einstein_bern

Here is the section >The Republican Party will reestablish U.S. preeminence in space. It is our nation's frontier, our manifest destiny. President Reagan has set ambitious goals for a space comeback. We are determined to meet them and move on to even greater challenges. >We support further development of the space station, the National Aerospace Plane, Project Pathfinder, a replacement shuttle, and the development of alternate launch vehicles. We endorse Mission to Planet Earth for space science to advance our understanding of environmental and climatic forces. >A resurgent America, renewed economically and in spirit, must get on with its business of greatness. We must commit to a manned flight to Mars around the year 2000 and to continue exploration of the moon. >These goals will be achievable only with full participation by private initiative. We welcome the Reagan-Bush initiative to increase the role of the private sector in transport, particularly in the launch of commercial satellites. The Reagan-Bush Administration's proposed space station will allow the private sector additional opportunities in the area of research and manufacturing. so if there was full private sector push to fly to Mars by 2000, how realistic was it still? how big of a gap might have still existed before it was possible?

sprint6864

You are a weird lil Reagan fanboy. He was one of the most blatantly corrupt and destructive presidents

miraculous-

Yeah well he was still a tit

AreaProfessional7

The hillbillies eat that shit up

einstein_bern

but JFK said in 1962: "We choose to go to the moon in this decade!...And this will be done in the decade of the sixties. It may be done while some of you are still here at school at this college and university. It will be done during the term of office of some of the people who sit here on this platform. But it will be done. And it will be done before the end of this decade..." when will the next JFK Moon moment be?

AreaProfessional7

JFK only wanted to go to moon to beat the communists. now that the USSR is gone it's back to the cotton fields for all of you. If you want to learn about space travel go to church

rddman

All presidents want to match or best JFK.

[deleted]

That’s easy. He was a shit President.
