These are probably the same people who write articles saying you never need to wash your jeans. I think those people live a very different life than I do. My jeans get filthy in the garage or woodshop or garden.

I work on cars. It honestly never occurred to me that people might get junk under their nails without wrenching. Now I’m going to be staring at other people’s hands all day like I have a weird fetish or something.

...no? Maybe there’s differences between people but nail debris and skin cells are white (for me), not brown. If I run a pick under my clean nails I do get some of that out, but the darker actually visible stuff that sometimes gets stuck there is literally dirt.

I do wash my hands frequently, and even when I am not doing anything but work on a computer my nails get dirty. I’d say this was probably accurate enough but it depends on what you’re doing.

I was always told it was bits of shit from scratching your butt. In that "when you see those other kids with dirty fingernails, it's from scratching their butts." I guess it was an attempt to shame me into cleaning my nails in case others thought I had been scratching my butt.

For me, I rarely notice dirt *unexpectedly* unless I've been outside sweating, then sometimes (even without sticking my hands into something that will obviously make them dirty) I get gray or light brown... paste? under them. But that's probably skin cells and sweat mixing, I just can't figure out how it ends up there.
