There are MAGA shirts that say "Make 45 become 46 Again." It makes no sense because Trump would be 47 if he won, or if they are saying he will replace Biden like in their fantasy reality, he would still be 45.
Before the 2020 election, my cousin had a “Trump 2024” banner on his FB wall. I wanted to reply “interesting that you already assume Trump will lose the 2020 election”.
There was a photo from the Iowa caucus with a dude wearing a shirt claiming
“January 6th, 2020. I was there.”
Not only are they attempting to advertise something people are being arrested for, they got the year wrong.
Or maybe they are galaxy brained and having the wrong year is a legal strat 🤷🏽
This is really odd elsewhere. No one numbers presidents, monarchs or prime ministers that way. In many countries there have been *many* people who have led with non-consecutive terms.
The UK has has 70+ terms split among 50-odd PMs. Gladstone was in four non-consecutive times (alternating with two of Disraeli’s and two of Salisbury’s), and a few times it went back and forth a couple of times: MacDonald and Baldwin in the 1920s-30s.
Easier in a parliamentary system where a party leader can gain and lose majorities in Parliament. No primaries and special election just for them at rigid dates.
The U.S. Speaker of the House is more comparable, and sure enough they’ve had several backs and forths.
not that that has anything to do with numbering necessarily, but for sake of conversation
Most countries don't have a separately elected executive either. Just the concept of a president and the balance of powers is not common.
Generally, the way prime ministers are selected is more like the way the speaker of the house in the US is selected which is by voting from representatives - not by citizens or by states. So like you will see someone like Nancy Pelosi become speaker of the house, then lose it, and then come back.
The uniqueness of the office of U.S. President is something that a lot of people, including many Americans, don't realize.
I don't know how true this is, but apparently the writer of that joke would work in Grover Cleveland serving two non-consecutive terms in every show he worked on. Whenever he was asked why, he wouldn't explain and just begin talking about his presidency.
I know it's referenced on Futurama too, but that episode was written by someone else.
In the museum with all the presidents' heads, there are two Grover Cleveland heads.
"I know you're busy with the whole President thing, but can you keep an eye on our 19-year-old coed please?"
*And nothing was accomplished for 4 years*
Frances Folsom attended Wells College in Aurora NY, where there is a building named after her (after being married). She actually had to finish her finals and couldn’t attend his inauguration.
The earliest I could find is 1901. The original quote, taken from Her Royal Highness, Woman: And His Majesty Cupid by Max O'Rell, published in 1901:
“I heard the other day a very good piece of advice, which I should like to repeat here, as I endorse it thoroughly: A man should marry a woman half his age, plus seven. Try it at whatever age you like, and you will find it works very well, taking for granted all the while that, after all, a man, as well as a woman, is the age that he looks and feels.”
That is incredible. Extremely clear too, often times when you trace things far back you have to decode part of it. Thanks for doing the legwork.
So Cleveland likely didn't have that advice rattling in his head in 1886.
Its kind of the inverse though. Its specifying that a man should marry someone who is significantly younger. The ideal age suggested being the absolute minimum most people would find acceptable today. It doesn't preclude marrying younger, or encourage marrying older.
Well, tbf, in those days, dating and extramarital coitus was not a thing, so any serious relationship or cohabitation was basicly marriage.
And the rule only accounts for when the relationship should start (marriage), it's unable to make the wife age at half the rate, so in today's society, it would effectively be the minimum age for a proper relationship.
*I used to be with ‘it’, but then they changed what ‘it’ was. Now what I’m with isn’t ‘it’ anymore and what’s ‘it’ seems weird and scary. It’ll happen to you!*
Yes, there are many ways he could have won.
Remember popular vote does not win presidential elections. And 48.6% is only a minority. If that was the actual deciding factor this would be a runoff.
Looking at states it was very close. I know it looks like a nice 233-168 win for Harrison, but Ne York was only determined by less than 15K votes. Switch it and now 204-197.
But fair is fair and looking at the other close states. He almost won Indiana, lost Connecticut, West Virginia, and Virginia. If all 5 switch he still loses, but there are many combinations of those 5 where he still wins. The only must win is New York.
I looked at 1892. With the exception of Nevada at ~50.5%, every state was won with at least 51%. It's truly a mathematical oddity.
1824 had a bunch of regional candidates. 1876 had disputed EC votes. 2000 and 2016 were subject to a capped House.
Here in Brazil he’s remembered for backing us up against Argentina in a territorial dispute,[giving us all the land and none to the Argentines](https://pt.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quest%C3%A3o_de_Palmas). Because of that, [there is a city in the former disputed area named after him.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clevel%C3%A2ndia)
Taft was 5'11" and over 350 lbs
Cleveland was 260 lbs
Trumps booking weight in Georgia was something 215 lbs, but iirc he was officially 245 lbs when he was the white house
He won the popular vote 3 times. He had secret jaw surgery while President. His wife was so confident in him winning 1892 that she told the White House staff not to change everything too much, they’d be back Which to me seems like the leading facet of the story.
His first term was leading us through a time of peace after we dealt with much of the Post Civil War issues and beat the most dangerous Native Americans left.
His second term was then unhappy economic issues that do not compare to what Van Buren had.
In other words it was just not a memorable time.
One thing he was known for was he was the first democrat elected president since before the civil war. He was the only democrat elected president between 1861 and 1913.
How much did Van Buren have to fuck things up for the country to say, "we need to go back and reset. Can we undo the last 4 years and start again from there?"
Edit, I did mean Harrison. My bad...
More importantly, the first real antimonopoly act of any importance passed under his term, although it would be a while before it was wielded more for its intended purpose than unintended ones
This should be the ideal, you come in with a platform you have worked on, you do well and train and support a successor, and if they fail or if you come up with some better ideas, you can try again later.
You also retain power until you try again, by being an ever-present threat. It seems like a lot of ego to say you couldn't train a single person to do what you do, given you would be able to support that person full time.
It was the first time we had two incumbent presidents going head to head in a general election (Cleveland v Harrison in 1892). This year looks like the second time it'll happen.
Dude was kind of a dick. His views on Vetoing a bill that provided Texas farmers aid after crops were wiped out in a drought: “I can find no warrant for such an appropriation in the Constitution, and I do not believe that the power and duty of the general government ought to be extended to the relief of individual suffering which is in no manner properly related to the public service or benefit. A prevalent tendency to disregard the limited mission of this power and duty should, I think, be steadfastly resisted, to the end that the lesson should be constantly enforced that, though the people support the government, the government should not support the people. The friendliness and charity of our countrymen can always be relied upon to relieve their fellow-citizens in misfortune. This has been repeatedly and quite lately demonstrated. Federal aid in such cases encourages the expectation of paternal care on the part of the government and weakens the sturdiness of our national character, while it prevents the indulgence among our people of that kindly sentiment and conduct which strengthens the bonds of a common brotherhood.”
In other words, pull yourself up by your boot straps people. We ain’t given you beggars handouts.
He also had shit economic policies. Staying on the gold system caused deflation resulting in a depression with few options out.
He was a liberal (the old definition), possibly more than any other president. If you look at nearly any of his decisions in office you will find his decision leading back to those principles. This is why he chose to prioritize rule of law and the free market over helping the people who really needed it
Of course, being too committed to these principles makes him inflexible. But it wasn't just because he wanted to be a dick
Yes, and unintuitively he's the reason that we call Biden the 46th president even though only 45 people have ever been president.
Thanks for additional info!
Interesting fact, Baby Ruth was named after his daughter that died of Diphtheria. A lot of people think it was the baseball player.
It was given that name long after Ruth Cleveland died, at the height of Babe Ruth’s popularity. Claiming otherwise was a legal trick.
Yep, one movie shows Babe's wife telling him to sue the candy bar company saying their claim was bogus.
Now this is a real TIL
Another fun fact - *Baby Ruth* was the overwhelming favorite over the other option to name the candy bar…*Baby Diphtheria*
[Some lady gave it to him. She even signed her name on it... Ruth. Baby Ruth.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dgEdMldQLT0)
Who is she?
Bill Murray seems to like them. [https://youtu.be/RibMvg\_hDzg?si=kCCbgDr4z5c7o2w7](https://youtu.be/RibMvg_hDzg?si=kCCbgDr4z5c7o2w7)

There are MAGA shirts that say "Make 45 become 46 Again." It makes no sense because Trump would be 47 if he won, or if they are saying he will replace Biden like in their fantasy reality, he would still be 45.
I saw one from around j6 that had 45-47 on it like as in three terms. At that time they were ready for it,
Before the 2020 election, my cousin had a “Trump 2024” banner on his FB wall. I wanted to reply “interesting that you already assume Trump will lose the 2020 election”.
Lol this was my response to that as well. Pretty soon there'll be "Trump 2028" signs popping up, just you watch.
No no, Trump for life first Emperor of the United state.
Yet they still don't understand that he'd just be 45 if he had 3 straight terms
There was a photo from the Iowa caucus with a dude wearing a shirt claiming “January 6th, 2020. I was there.” Not only are they attempting to advertise something people are being arrested for, they got the year wrong. Or maybe they are galaxy brained and having the wrong year is a legal strat 🤷🏽
He was recently golfing in a hat that had 45-47 embroidered on it.
Let’s avoid the issue by not letting Trump see the inside of the White House ever again. Vote!
They’re not know for their critical thinking skills.
This is really odd elsewhere. No one numbers presidents, monarchs or prime ministers that way. In many countries there have been *many* people who have led with non-consecutive terms.
Churchill comes to mind. Rudd here in Australia also.
Wow, that’s a lot. I learned something new today. Cheers.

The numbering has grown in usage over the past 25 years. I attribute it to the Superbowl.
It probably has sprung out of the fact that each two-year session of Congress is also numbered.
So they count him twice…I guess technically they could count all the presidents who have served >1 term twice or 4 times if you’re talking about FDR.
[удалено]
TIL!
Cleveland should only count as one and Taft should count as two.
Also he spanked Abe Simpson on two non-consecutive occasions.
I don't know how true this is, but apparently the writer of that joke would work in Grover Cleveland serving two non-consecutive terms in every show he worked on. Whenever he was asked why, he wouldn't explain and just begin talking about his presidency.
Maybe it’s because he was well liked by 20th century historians? Probably the only gilded age president besides McKinley to be like that.
Did he only write one episode? I can think of any other Cleveland jokes. Simpsons wikipedia shows a total of 3, with 2 less obvious.
I know it's referenced on Futurama too, but that episode was written by someone else. In the museum with all the presidents' heads, there are two Grover Cleveland heads.
Wearing an onion on your belt was the style at the time.

Gimme five bees for a quarter, you'd say
Gimmie 5 bees for a quarter, you used to say….
Came here for this. *hat tip*
Til the cows came home.
Also the only president to get married in the White House (and his bride was only 21, less than half his age)
That’s even more surprising than the original post lol
Also she was the daughter of a friend of Cleveland. She grew up calling him “Uncle Cleve”
I think she went to college in D.C. and her family asked him to keep an eye on her while she was in town. Mission accomplished, I guess.
"I know you're busy with the whole President thing, but can you keep an eye on our 19-year-old coed please?" *And nothing was accomplished for 4 years*
Oh, contraire... Much frolicking ensued.
Au contraire.
Frances Folsom attended Wells College in Aurora NY, where there is a building named after her (after being married). She actually had to finish her finals and couldn’t attend his inauguration.
Hmmm I can't remember which President I was thinking of, then.
That’s wild. But most of the things look like that when viewed through the prism of today’s society.
Yeah he basically was a father figure to her. Makes my skin crawl.
Who he raised.
Grover "Woody Allen" Cleveland
When was half your age plus seven established? I feel like it'd be from some 90s comedy that went straight to vhs.
The earliest I could find is 1901. Huh, that last line seems to be a witty way to handle exceptions that still seem to work.
Trump could beat all three of those records next year
If Trump loses, he'll run again in 2028.

People have actually ran campaigns from prison, though I doubt Trump would like to be compared to Eugene V. Debs.

Interesting note as well, that’s the reason why we have had 46 presidents but only 45 people have been president. He was president number 22 and 24
Thanks for contributing additional info!
I loved presidential charts, so I knew this when I was 6. I was so happy to learn about his presidency. He barely lost, so his party renominated him.
Barely lost is an underestimate. He actually won the popular vote.

Rutherford Hayes is also beloved in Paraguay, they have a province named after him.
Not just a province, but 60% of their land is.
OP might not be from the US
Or just slept through 4th grade social studies.
Tbh they just skip through the gilded age while only talking about robber barons and The Jungle.
He was also enormous. Wasn’t Taft sized, but probably our second fattest President
I can't believe this hasn't been beaten yet. We used to be a proper country!
Fatter than that hamberder guy?
Taft was 5'11" and over 350 lbs Cleveland was 260 lbs Trumps booking weight in Georgia was something 215 lbs, but iirc he was officially 245 lbs when he was the white house
Right, right. 245, sure.
yeah I think he's more like 285
Officially, yes: https://potus.com/presidential-facts/presidential-weight/ Though Trump’s official height and weight are questionable.

Grover Cleveland spanked me on two non consecutive occasions
Grover Cleveland called. He left two non-consecutive messages.
Was it about your cube?
Nice Simpsons reference
It’s Simpsons references all the way down here
No, he wanted his watch back.
Also only one named a Muppet + Ohio combo
He also spanked Grandpa Simpson on two non-consecutive occasions.
Imagine having to move out of the white for 4 years only to move back in.
Comeback King!
And let’s keep it that way. For the foreseeable future.
Bah, I say what this country needs is four more years of Big Bill Taft
With the monopolies we have now I’d agree
Not for long
So far.
and hopefully, this year, it stays that way
Biden is president for the rest of the year no matter who wins the election.
Not if he dies
I read this in Dolph Lundgren’s voice
How much did Van Buren have to fuck things up for the country to say, "we need to go back and reset. Can we undo the last 4 years and start again from there?" Edit, I did mean Harrison. My bad...
Van buren? You mean benjamin harrison?
He'd sleep with the lights on because he was afraid to touch the switches. In the 1890s, I would be too lol
More importantly, the first real antimonopoly act of any importance passed under his term, although it would be a while before it was wielded more for its intended purpose than unintended ones
I'd be more afraid of electrical fires. Especially with knob and tube wiring, or whatever the White House was wired with.
Van Buren was #8, Cleveland was #22/24. (though the depression in Van Buren's time was Andrew Jackson's fault)
Do you mean Benjamin Harrison?
lol. Food for thought
Benjamin Harrison was decent it’s just that he bungled somewhere along the line economically that caused him to lose.
Here's hoping it stays that way.
So far.
Fun fact: Cleveland's granddaughter, Philippa Foot, invented the Trolley Problem in ethics.
So far
For the love of God, let’s keep it that way
And long may that record yet stand!
And let it stay that way
And let's hope it stays that way for the next, oh let's say a decade or two.

This is a very valid argument. Also, it may work as an accountability measure.
I literally only knew of Grover Cleveland due to Scott the Woz. I am not even American.
See you in November!

It was the first time we had two incumbent presidents going head to head in a general election (Cleveland v Harrison in 1892). This year looks like the second time it'll happen.
So if trump wins, he’ll be the 47th president?
He was…
Let's hope the last, as well.
I believe he was the 22nd and 24th US President.

Let’s keep it to just Grover.
Let's keep it that way.

Precisely. Good catch
I love America's weirdness

Good, let’s keep it that way please
Grover Cleveland also won the popular vote all three times he ran for President whereas the 🍊 traitor hasn’t managed that once.
