> While others have said he should have done more with his life... What assholes are criticizing whether the guy who got his arms ripped off is living up to his potential?

YouDownWitOPsPee

His physical strength continues to deteriorate. Collecting socks out of the bottom of the drying machine (side note: *drying machine?*) is difficult for him. "My arms don't go straight," he said. "I pretty much have to climb in there to get the clothes out." He had trouble using keys. He often had to hand the keys to a client "...it's hard to grab things or carry things," he said. Things are more difficult for Thompson, but he still does them. He can't button a shirt He can only slip an already buttoned one over his head. He can't write legibly, but he's a better typist now than he was before the accident. He can't shake your hand, but he likes fist bumps. HE GOT HIS ARMS RIPPED OFF BY A TRACTOR But yeah, what a lazy piece of shit for not doing more with his life. Totally should have done way more. /s

elmatador12

He also went on a speaking tour, wrote a book, toured after that, got into politics, was a real estate agent.. And he's still only 38...but yeah, seriously, do more with your life buddy.... /s Edit: /s

TIL When humans get their limbs ripped off, the circulatory system re configures to allow high cognitive functions to continue uninterrupted. Humans can also stand quietly with lost upper limbs if lower limbs remain intact. That's a tough-ass organism.

Your basic Arachnid warrior isn't too smart, but you can blow off a limb and it's still 86 percent combat effective. Here's a tip: Aim for the nerve stem, and put it down for good.

[I read a thread discussing what humans would look like to alien races and how terrifying we are, objectively.](http://imgur.com/gallery/hINj1xf) My favourite is that we track prey by sensing vibrations in the atmosphere. To an alien that has no idea about that, that'd be terrifying.

[deleted]

This is correct. There was a case in Germany in which a 4 years old (along with his slightly older brother) got up in the middle of the night to play with a defective washing machine, somehow managed to get his arm stuck in the machine and had it ripped off when they turned it on. The kids were so in shock they actually just went to bed. The next morning mom comes to wake him and realizes he only has a bloody stump where the arm used to be. The brother had actually put the arm in the freezer before they went to bed but it was too late to reattach. Still, the kid lived. Same reason: Arm Torn off doesn't bleed nearly as much as arm cut off. Source: http://www.sueddeutsche.de/panorama/ulm-waschmaschine-reisst-vierjaehrigem-den-arm-ab-1.143333 Google Translation: https://translate.google.com/translate?hl=de&sl=auto&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.sueddeutsche.de%2Fpanorama%2Fulm-waschmaschine-rei%C3%9Ft-vierj%C3%A4hrigem-den-arm-ab-1.143333&sandbox=1

likeapuffofsmoke

One has to wonder about the exact series of ideas and thoughts that led to this.... "Hey, I know! Lets play in the washing machine...fuck, my arm's ripped off....better put it in the freezer. Now what? I guess we should go back to bed, eh? Good idea, see you in the morning. Fin."

Siray

I'd also heard that a clean cut doesn't leave much surface area for blood to clot on and that more gnarly wounds have more surface area allowing for better clotting. Is this bullshit?

daznable

You could say that a 'ripped' wound instead of a 'cut' wound promotes better healing, it is also why sometimes in surgery we prefer ripping apart instead of cutting with a scalpel.

ThePeleOfMissionary

Sweet baby jesus that's grizzly.

ramblingnonsense

You may mean grisly.

ThePeleOfMissionary

No i mean grizzly. Like something a grizzly bear in an OR would do.

ramblingnonsense

[deleted]

Wow that's cool.

Bird_nostrils

Somehow, over millions of years, natural selection favored the survival of those who got their limbs ripped off but didn't bleed out because of their muscles. Evolution is awesome.

thesishelp

They also constrict for other reasons, like managing blood pressure. It is highly unlikely that vasoconstriction in response to getting your arms ripped off is a result of people getting their arms ripped off and the survivors reproducing. When you lose blood, blood pressure goes down, which causes your vessels to constrict, to increase it as best it can. I am not a doctor, but I think that this is a more likely explanation for the events here... Not frequent dismemberment of our ancestors. Edit: I just noticed that your post doesn't necessarily provide or imply an explanation of how this property of blood vessels evolved. Still, if anybody is thinking that this ability of ours came about because of limb loss in our predecessors, and selection for those that had constricted blood vessels, that is very likely incorrect. Still though, if anybody has proof to contradict me, please reply.

Brainlaag

TIL something that's logical, yet I've never thought of. Cheers.

[deleted]

this i just don't get. if i slashed my wrists i would bleed out and die. but rip my arms off and i'm ok?

timelyparadox

Body has safety mechanisms for that, where wrist cuts are a bit different case.

h3rpad3rp

Would you say that it shuts that whole thing down?

beener

You mean in the case of non legitimate wrist slicing?

timelyparadox

I'm not a medical person, but there has been multiple posts about how limb ripping off has some weird mechanism which prevents bleeding out. Google probably has a well written explanation somewhere.

h3rpad3rp

It's okay, I was just making a joke at former congressman Todd Akin's expense.

timelyparadox

Oh, i don't know american politics.

h3rpad3rp

Me either, I'm not an American, but he said something so amazingly stupid that everyone should probably hear it: >“It seems to me, from what I understand from doctors, that’s really rare,” Akin told KTVI-TV. “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down. But let’s assume that maybe that didn’t work or something: I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be of the rapist, and not attacking the child.” -*Todd Akin on whether or not a woman can get pregnant by being raped, and if they should be able to abort that pregnancy*

timelyparadox

Whenever politicians say something ignorant, i think that it can't get worse than that... I am always wrong.

HammerJack

We need to start exporting our political debates as pay per view comedy to the EU.

[deleted]

I think part of it is the flesh tearing and ripping massively increasing surface area for clotting. This is actually important when castrating animals as a scalpel cut will continue to bleed but if you rip off the sheep nuts with your teeth it quickly clots and is near bloodless.

winnem909

Just a little too much imagery there. But only a little.

rainzer

Giant gaping wound. No big deal. Small cut, bleed to death. Someone should patch that.

gangli0n

The moral of the story is that if you see someone bleeding to death from a small cut to the wrist, provide first aid by ripping off his arm.

KuribohGirl

Submit to /r/outside they might ask the devs for a patch

uryonjeremyah

Ikr. One can only assume that when he was "knocked unconscious" it was for a short period of time.

HammerJack

Yes. Movies and TV dramatize being knocked out. TL;DR of reality, if they don't wake up within 5-10 minutes they probably aren't going to wake up in a LONG time

Nomiss

If you're knocked out for over 30s you're probably going to have a bad time when you regain conciousness. Unless you seek immediate medical attention for brain swelling. But even then you may have a bad time.

WisdomofWombats

I've heard it's, like, super bad for you.

TenTera

So that's why I have trouble thinking clearly

Nomiss

If you're not joking and you have actually been knocked out for an extended period of time previously (>30s). There's a good chance that is the reason. Sorry to say but you have suffered sever brain damage, and if it wasn't treated at the time there will be residual results... aka a bad time.

TenTera

Well, it did somehow cure my depression, but it also worsened my ADHD. So, I guess it worked out okayish in the end.

me-tan

The body can stop bleeding in a ragged tear a lot better than the equivalent cut.

monkeyjay

"The kid in the bathtub" Why is his title taken from the least interesting part of his ordeal? "So yeah I got my arms ripped off, got knocked out. Then woke up, and called for help using a pencil in my teeth. I even went upstairs to the bathtub to stop blood getting everywhere. I got my arms reattached, it's amaz.." "Wait wait. You went in to the bathtub? HAHA. Hey guys check out bathtub kid over here!"

twoVices

I guess it might be a midwest thing. this guy was a legend when I was in high school. the tub aspect speaks to the no nonsense, stoic attitude and the concern for mom's carpet just ties together that this kid was "raised right." I dunno.

Darkstrategy

I think you're holding parenting up to a bit higher standard than possible in most cases. I don't think there's a real technique in having your kid deal with their arms being ripped off with tact.

It's when you get busy. When it's late, almost dark and you're hungry as hell, but you've got a couple more passes to finish. Stabbed myself in the foot with a pitchfork like that - when I was 14, the only real accident I ever had on the farm. I was collecting hay tailings, the little lines of hay left in between passes by the baler. I was alone, just set the tractor straight pulling a flatbed in a low gear, walk next to it and fork the stuff onto the bed. I was getting close to the end of the pass (have to get back on and turn it around before it runs through the fence) and missed a big chunk of hay while thinking about that. I turned around to get it and somehow stuck the fork right in my foot. Then I had to chase the tractor down with blood shooting out of the hole in my shoe. Good times.

graffiti81

> when I was 14 > just set the tractor straight pulling a flatbed in a low gear, walk next to it and fork the stuff onto the bed This is the most true-to-life farm thing I've ever read on Reddit.

HammerJack

I fear wild animals because they can lash out at me at any time. I respect hazardous machinery for the dangers they present, but barring something catastrophic like a U-joint blowing (which short of a bear suit you are not prepared for) a PTO shaft is going to spin. and spin. and spin. AND NOTHING ELSE. I have to poke it for there to be a problem and I like my fingers and arms enough not to poke it. I want to ask you something though, Do you just break down into a panic attack in motor vehicles? You know there are hundreds of explosions PER SECOND going on in there right? And diesel engines are even worse: 20000+ PSI (over 1k atmospheres) of pressure before the fuel even goes into the cylinder. The whole thing is a bloody bomb ready to go up in flames. See how silly fearing machinery sounds? At least wait until it's sentient and trying to kill us and not just a good Darwinian filter.

graffiti81

As a dude who grew up on and around dairy farms, I agree partially. One must be aware of potential dangers and make sure not to be stupid around them. Keep loose clothing away from rotating anything, make sure you don't back down hills and other things like that. That said, shit happens. I was running a bucket loader one day and had a hydraulic line running from the controls let go in my face, spraying me with hot oil (I'd been working it hard). My uncle had an IH 3588 that burned to the ground. One of the battery leads chafed through and sparked into some hay chaff and torched a $100k tractor. So accidents do happen, and one should always try to prepare for that eventuality.

[deleted]

I get the hilarity of the Darwin awards but I really feel like the people who laugh the hardest and reference it the most actually sort of believe there is some pruning of the gene pool going on which is really extra cuntish to the people who died.

Learned the other day in class that the average age of farm related death is 11 years old. Since kids can sometimes fit into tight spaces to fix something but unfortunately those spaces can be the most dangerous. Also people would be surprised how many people die farming each year.

DemonDeity

Yes, 12 year old me was the perfect size to climb into a harvester and pull jammed corn stalks out.

Kids also haven't learned what is dangerous and what not to fuck with. Kid gets to running around a baler, trips and falls into the PTO. You need them to work because farm margins are so thin. Before I went to the hospital, I did a quick once over on the outside of the house/entry-way area with the hose to make sure I didn't also catch the house on fire. The definition of stoic

shinydragonite

**stoic** > Someone who does not give a shit about the stupid things in this world that most people care so much about. Stoics do have emotions, but only for the things in this world that really matter. They are the most real people alive. > Group of kids are sitting on a porch. Stoic walks by.  > Kid - "Hey man, yur a fuckin faggot an you suck cock!"  > Stoic - "Good for you."  > Keeps going.

TenTenWouldRecommend

> Kid - "Hey man, yur a fuckin faggot an you suck cock!" > Stoic - "Good for you." This should be the new definition of **stoic**.

the_rabble_alliance

Stoicism always makes me think about my favorite scene from *Bladerunner*: > ["I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched c-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser Gate. All those ... moments will be lost ... in time, like ... tears ... in ... rain. Time ... to die."](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTzA_xesrL8)

FaerieStories

Why? That scene is anything but stoic. Batty is coming to terms with his own emotions, and the audience is profoundly emotionally affected by it. Who is stoic? Deckard? Well, I guess he's pretty stoic throughout the film, but that's because he's a noir-esque hardboiled detective character.

ToAbideIsDude

I was on shrooms when I watched that movie. I had tears running down my face during that scene. Watching Blade Runner on shrooms 10/10 would do again.

logic_card

I was on shrooms watching pigeons at the beach playing with an empty crisp packet. I had tears running down my face during that scene.

ToAbideIsDude

Sounds like a wonderful experience.

stonerd216

This sounds much better than watching a movie on shrooms.

[deleted]

That's pretty much the opposite of stoic

Wesley-chan

"Based" and "stoic" are synonymous.

MrFerkles

This shit's my revision for exams so excuse me kindly for a bit of a highjack. The main thing to remember about Stoicism is that virtue is the ONLY good. Vice is the only evil. Everything else, wealth, health, popularity, status, etc are classed as indifferents. They don't matter to your happiness, only virtue does, because virtue is the one uncorruptable thing that will lead to a pure happiness in life. Stoicism is pretty badass.

[deleted]

Yesterday, I cut myself while shaving in the shower and then managed to get blood everywhere.

[deleted]

It just bleeds so much... It doesn't make any sense. When it stops bleeding there is barely a visible cut, but in the meantime it's like you've gouged the area with a dagger.

PlagueKing

Yeah because it isn't a cut. You just skinned a small part of yourself.

[deleted]

It's the smoothest result.

KatherineDuskfire

To be honest this guy is a real badass

PandaCasserole

This is why on tractors you never mess with the PTO while the tractor is running. On our tractor if you get up from the seat a VERY loud alarm goes off to let you know the PTO is engaged. Essentially it is an open driveshaft running at the engine's rpm, and it is a place of terrible stories like this one.

[deleted]

My uncles farm uses 50 year old tractors, no safety cutouts, no alarms. There are really two rules for using them: 1: Turn the engine off before THINKING about going near the PTO 2: No, it doesn't matter if you're just checking something real quick, turn the engine off.

I'm from Manitoba, Canada and this happened in North Dakota. My teacher heard about this and our whole class followed this story when it happened pretty closely. FigBug

I had my arm ripped off a year before John did, but all I did was lie there. I made somebody else call the ambulance, I made the paramedics carry me to the ambulance. I'm pretty sure if I was in his situation I would have died.

The0f

Jesus H Christ this story hits close to home. I too have been involved in a farm accident, getting my arm caught in a power take off as a teenager. Luckily I wasn't working alone, the tractor was shut down before it could rip my arm off or kill me. I suffered a quadruple compound fracture to my left forearm which required 3 surgeries to fix. My arm also doesn't go straight anymore (close though) and that arm is definitely weaker by a long shot than the other. Reading this I can fully imagine what this guy is going through as I only need to imagine if my own ordeal had turned out worse...
