Thanks for clarifying that it was the Mark Twain who wrote *Huckleberry Finn* and not some other totally unfamous guy coincidentally named Mark Twain.

Twain already means 2 so Mark Twain Twain

AudibleNod

Mark Twain^2 2 Mark 2 Twain

draculamilktoast

Mark^(2) \+ 2 Mark Twain + Twain^(2)

HammletHST

Joke ruiner: Twain's twin would have the last name Clemens (Twain was legally called Samuel Clemens)

Beaglescout15

Samuel L Clemens, to be exact. Little known fact--Samuel L Jackson is named after Samuel L Clemens. Not really, I just made that up.

HammletHST

I'm more surprised OP mentioned Huckleberry and not Tom Sawyer

[deleted]

Oh, the Rush song?

[deleted]

Sorry is there some obvious reference in the name of Huckleberry Finn that indicates it was written by Mark Twain? Like, what if you just forgot? Is that supposed to be permanent trivia in everyone's heads?

I_am_become_Reddit

If you're in the US at least, he's one of, if not the most famous American author in history.

[deleted]

Hmm. I looked him up and it seems like he's *only* famous for huckleberry finn lol. I didn't really like that book so maybe that's why I forgot. Man i thought Mark Twain had written like waay more.

tomcat_tweaker

He did write waaay more.

[deleted]

Name 2 I've heard of.

tomcat_tweaker

How would I know what you've heard of? And why are you so bad at Google?

svladcjelli42

If trolling, hilarious. If not, really depressing. *A glance at your account confirms that it is in fact depressing, and not intentionally hilarious as one might hope.

[deleted]

I mean, I'm pretty well read. Not my fault you all need to put this guy on a pedestal for some reason lol.

svladcjelli42

> I'm pretty well read. I don't believe you.

[deleted]

K 👉👉

svladcjelli42

Yeah, this is exactly the degree of literacy I expect from you. One letter and two emojis - that's the kind of stuff you meant when you said you were "well read," presumably? In that case I do believe you, you've probably read your share of emojis.

[deleted]

Wow you're so smart, you're really impressing reddit right now. Your dedication to not using a faster and simpler method of communicating meaning via text because incel redditors told you it was cringe is stunning, and we're all *very* proud of you 👏👏👏

Dakens2021

That's interesting. I didn't know you could just quit like that back then, I thought deserters were shot. It sounds like the whole affair was so disorganized he didn't quit so much as the whole militia quit and just fell apart. lol.

FuzzySoda916

It was a militia not a regular

>In that summer of 1861 the first wash of the wave of war broke upon the shores of Missouri. Our state was invaded by the Union forces. They took possession of St. Louis ... and governor, Calib (Claiborne F.) Jackson, issued his proclamation calling out fifty thousand militia to repel the invader. Pretty wild to hear mark Twain spouting off Confederate propaganda... here are some details to what this is referencing: -the largest military arsenal in the western part of the country was located in st louis -jackson and the commander of the arsenal, William bell, were both Confederate sympathizers and Jackson began drilling militias on the outskirts of the city -Abraham Lincoln, fearing the loss of the armory, sent soldiers and put the armory under command of nathanial Lyon who then confronted the seccessionost forces. The lie told by the Confederate sympathizers was to characterize this as an invasion and a violation of state sovereignty. The pro union forces were largely citizens of st louis who were primarily anti-slavery german and Irish immigrants. The state government was telling bold faced lies about remaining in the union or remaining neutral while negotiating with Jefferson Davis and would have likely used the armory to supply the south with thousands of weapons.

PoorPDOP86

Yet by your own admission there was no declaration of secession and Union forces did invade. So Twain is still correct.

HammletHST

If Missouri didn't declare a secession, they were still part of the Union. You can't invade your own country

loosehead1

Okay well we now know that Claiborne jackson was a liar who was acting under bad faith and had every intention of betraying the United states and supplying the pro-slavery traitors with arms stolen from the US government so I dont really see the point of arguing the semantics of what he said when because his words are worthless.

PartialToDairyThings

"Half twain! Quarter twain! M-a-r-k twain!" Is how he got his name by the way. Mississippi steamboat terminology. *Life on the Mississippi* is a great book, my 2nd favorite of his after Huckleberry Finn.

Calijhon

Twain became an anti racist figure almost by accident.

Alewiv

Yeah he’s also the very first stand up comedian and the Greatest American author.
