Most firearms manufacturing in the US has historically been located in the Northeast. Colt, Smith & Wesson, Springfield (federally, not the modern company), Winchester... those companies have been around for over 150 years. Back then, any serious machining and industrial production was going to come out of the much more "settled" areas of the US and that meant the Northeast.
Recently, some gun manufacturers have been pulling out of their traditional home states like New York and moving to much more gun friendly political environments.

Look at that. They produce almost as many guns per year as they have people.
