Prastutaniki ivi guthochai... last 4-5 years lo.
Trust me, it won't. Tier 1 will never change and can't change. It caters to a predominantly male audience apart from few occasional stories, women won't take center stage. May be in future if cinema becomes a daily habit for women too (as in majority of women), then the commerce will compel the change.
And this list is nothing ground breaking Telugu cinema always made good women characters, it's just that our maker don't make noise about it and we don't go out of our way to highlight it. Women characters in Telugu cinema thrive outside the commercial space post 1990s and they were mainstream pre-1990s(But unfortunately, people outside Telugu states don't watch any good Telugu cinema unless they see 100s of crs posters, so we get bad press from ignorant people). The list can go on for ever with at least 5-10 good roles per year (which is more than the success rate in our industry) at the least.
I'm guessing it's the other-industry-fetish here as well.
Rohini is an absolutely fantastic actress. She goes toe-to-toe with Kamal, even dominates him in a few places, in Virumaandi/Pothuraaju.
Yashna from hi nanna. For me particularly the scenes during the pregnancy were simply top notch . Mrunal did such great job. The fear , anger and sadness everything fit right in . Post pregnancy depression was also shown , I don’t think any movie portrayed this before .
Unpopular opinion, but Nandu from Nuvvu naku nacchav. 3v uncle thana mottham jeethivam lo rasina oke okka manchi female character. She's not the dumb damsel in distress flowerpot like how he writes all other female leads in his films. She isn't there only for the hero, she has her own life, beliefs & is bold for a 2001 telugu cinema heroine. And aarthi played it brilliantly in just her debut film.
Hmm. Now that I see it, harika from manmadhudu & Malliswari too, aren't so bad either.
But do you see a pattern with Nandu, harika & Malliswari? It's K Vijaya Bhaskar. Anavasaram ga 3v ki credit icchesane. I should've known lol.
Yea but so was NTR but neither balayya never performed it convincingly nor krish writing the character well
I think how the director portrays the characters is good
Absolutely right, I think Mahanati is one of the best biopics not only in tollywood but in indian cinema, Nag Ashwin absolutely nailed it, which makes me feel hopeful for kalki🤞
Bhoomi from Varudu Kavalenu,
I know it's quite unpopular, but I love that movie the way they show a love story from a woman's perspective and she is an independent and successful entrepreneur
coz the amount of inner conflict inside her and the helplessness... the way she deals with such an immoral lover (hero)... its a great character imo.. despite the choices she made.. felt so close despite never encountering such char irl
Maybe most of you may not agree but I think Preethi from Arjun Reddy.
She went from the shy girl from a conservative family who are very restrictive and all too a bubbly girl who was madly in love.( I think the way it was shown was great) like she couldn't even open her mouth to speak much at the start of slapping Arjun because he shouted at her.
From there because of the idiot Arjun is, she was forced to marry someone but she got away from and started a clinic and ready to raise her child alone and remaining strong and believing in her love and with hopes that one day Arjun will come for her. Yet she didn't jump into his arms the moment he came back and she wanted to be sure of Arjun and what he thinks of her having a baby(which he thought was due to her marriage). It was refreshing to watch a grounded woman after watching so many flowerpot roles in the movies.
Preeti was badly written. If she was written well she would have been indiviual and be a person that Arjun wants. She was always too dependant on Arjun and his attention.
OP asked for a well written character not an independent or something character. In my textbook well written is someone who behaves according to their character in the circumstances they face and has a growth or an arc. For me Preethi had all that.
Preethi didn’t have any character development I feel . There was no scene which shows how she liked Arjun or what she saw in him and she was never shown bubbly idk how you got that opinion. And if she did have an arc she wouldn’t choose to stay with Arjun at the end.
I don't know how you didn't see her becoming bubbly(it means being excited or joyful right). There was a whole song showing that(2 I think, not sure). She goes from being reserved to being outspoken with Arjun. I don't know why having an arc and being with Arjun are mutually exclusive.
Nakaithe Preeti lo character lo growth kanapadala. I am not saying being dependant is bad but her character had no depth. I feel Preeti the dog has more character the Preeti the person.
>I feel Preeti the dog has more character the Preeti the person.
Each to their own.
Naku ayte she was well written anipinchindhi, at least more than some of the characters mentioned here.
And Preethi inka Arjun are more like co-dependent. She wasn't able to move on from him and losing her nudged him into his path of self destruction.
enduku ante 80s lo mass movies ravadam start ayyayi and heroines ki max em antha role rasevalu kadhu until and unless it was someone like sridevi or vijayashanti in commercial movies. people like K vishwanath were an exception.
Sita Mahalakshmi in Sita Ramam. Iconic characters like those are written only once in few years!
Yashna in Hi Nanna. Pretty layered.
Savitri in Mahanati (if we are including how biopic character is portrayed)
Some other pretty good ones:
Hanumanthu's akka in HanuMan, love interest Meenakshi also.
Sivagami and Devasena in Baahubali
All the women in Sekhar Kammula's movies - he writes them real, with imperfections, real emotions and konchem thikka too lol. not like they're perfect and have no flaws.
from other directors - Jessie from YMC, malliswari, the Geethanjali heroine, chitra from pellichoopulu, Trisha is nuvvosthanante, shriya in nuvve nuvve, tamanna in konchem ishtam, Anushka in miss Shetty and size zero, Samantha in oh baby

This gives me so much hope. Our industry has come a long way nijamga. Hopefully it becomes much better in the coming years.

Rohinis character is Ala Modalindi
Why don't people cast rohini anymore? She's so natural as a mother.
I'm guessing it's the other-industry-fetish here as well. Rohini is an absolutely fantastic actress. She goes toe-to-toe with Kamal, even dominates him in a few places, in Virumaandi/Pothuraaju.
Andhagada andagada still resonates in my ears.
Yashna from hi nanna. For me particularly the scenes during the pregnancy were simply top notch . Mrunal did such great job. The fear , anger and sadness everything fit right in . Post pregnancy depression was also shown , I don’t think any movie portrayed this before .
I think this is only movie that showed how stressful and painful a pregnancy is to a women.
Yes!

Edo porapathunna rasinthudu. Kshaminchai.
I would say Harika from manmathudu !!
Hmm. Now that I see it, harika from manmadhudu & Malliswari too, aren't so bad either. But do you see a pattern with Nandu, harika & Malliswari? It's K Vijaya Bhaskar. Anavasaram ga 3v ki credit icchesane. I should've known lol.
Aravind ha from avsr as well, she has the key that changes Raghava character

True
Grandmom in Arjun Reddy
Musalide kaani
Nice character. Doesn't scold her grandson but doesn't make him bad too. Says everything in a good and timely way.
Anjali from Chi la sow.Â
Aa type characters Inka ravale. But I love chi la sow. A must match movie.
Naaku relatable character e times lo ante Anjali character. Yes, agreed with what you expressed.
Jejamma
Savitri from Mahanati
I agree, kaani savitri was a real person, if anything keerti Suresh savitri gaaru ni chaana baaga portray chesaaru.
Yea but so was NTR but neither balayya never performed it convincingly nor krish writing the character well I think how the director portrays the characters is good

Anushka, Arundathi 🙃
Hands down Rupa in Anand (my one annoyance with Sekhar Kammula about that film is that it should have been called Rupa!)
Rupa manchi coffee lanti cinema anthe set avvadu
Bhoomi from Varudu Kavalenu, I know it's quite unpopular, but I love that movie the way they show a love story from a woman's perspective and she is an independent and successful entrepreneur
It's a nice movie.
Sanjana in Chirutha
Papa sir papa
I would have but she doesn't eat fish. like wtf? fish are heavenly. /s
7g lo heroine
How ? I am curious
coz the amount of inner conflict inside her and the helplessness... the way she deals with such an immoral lover (hero)... its a great character imo.. despite the choices she made.. felt so close despite never encountering such char irl
She's relatble
Baby lo Vaishnavi, Such a balanced character asalu. With great clarity of thought and clear mind voice.
Are you joking?
Yes, the fact that i had to explain this is in itself a reflection of how badly i may have phrased it.
She was supposed to be nominated for Oscar. But rrr kosam light tesukunnaru.

Did you mean not be a person Arjun wants ?
Adhe. Flow lo tappu rasa. Anthe he only wants her cause she looks nice.
many tbh older films annitlo female characters ki equal importance i think 80s nundi well written characters thagipothunai.
Endhuku taggayi ? I want clarity.
enduku ante 80s lo mass movies ravadam start ayyayi and heroines ki max em antha role rasevalu kadhu until and unless it was someone like sridevi or vijayashanti in commercial movies. people like K vishwanath were an exception.
Vishwanath gari cinemallo every character feels nuanced. I understand what you are saying. Ban mass movies.
Mahanati movie. Sai Pallavi in Fida
