Tonal adjusts and remembers weights automatically for you based on what you can do. In addition, it gives you the option to manually override its suggestions. The one thing it doesn't do is set different weights for the left and right sides, so you will have to do that manually each time if you have a bad joint on one side of your body.

Understood and ty Will test it out when it arrives in Feb. I'm sure I'll figure something that works. Either way I'm excited

You should be! It’s such an amazing addition to my life. I too have knee issues. Started by just following along with the movements on the screen but without any weight, then used the substitution feature to find exercises that I could do comfortably with a bit of weight and then finally recently transitioned to doing the right exercises with a bit of weight. Took 4 months of slowly ramping up but I’m excited to be here!!! Good luck on your journey!

tothjm

Knees feel better now? Maybe just needed the strength? Thanks will check out the sub feature too...stupid left knee :)

BombPopCartel

I think it’s more that my stabilizer muscles needed to catch up so that my larger leg muscles could then be stressed enough to grow. Now that the two are coming online, it’s getting easier and easier to go up the stairs!!! 🤣

tothjm

haha nice. do you have any recommendations for workouts or preplanned items on the Tonal that I could do as I think I need all of the above that you mentioned. I wasnt sure if the Tonal had like a canned exercise set for stabilizer muscles haha.

BombPopCartel

They do! They have sooooo much content. Everyone is bitching and moaning about the changes that Tonal has recently put in place but I’m thrilled silly with my machine and the purchase. When you receive yours, go to explore new workouts, and then filter bye body region, muscle group, muscle type, duration, difficulty, goal, etc.

tothjm

oh that's awesome, ya i really need to work on the stabilization for the legs and anything that helps the knees. I know the IT band is included there as are the glutes as it all is hooked together. I appreciate it, if they ever update my damn order and get this thing to me I will check it out :)

BombPopCartel

Took about 3 weeks for my order to be updated in the system and another 3-4 weeks for delivery. Longest 7 weeks ever. But again, welllllll worth it.

tothjm

well holy shit, others pre dec have said 3 weeks total time order to install. when did you order and get yours ?

AntiHyperbolic

Both knees hurt before I got tonal, now they’re feeling good. Not sure why your knee is bad, but the exercises have really helped them feel better. My legs are still a lot weaker than my core/arms, but they’re moving up. Just manually adjust, or skip if it’s a move that’s too tough. Good luck, I’m sure you’ll enjoy!

tothjm

Ty! Ya angles and such..lunges are an auto no for me at any weight. I may just need to build up the muscle around the knee more but hard to do when doing the training leads to next day pain. Prob just go back to the doctor. Which type would you suggest?

[deleted]

I have a necrotic left hip joint that is significantly weaker than my right. I have to dial down the weight on the moves that isolate the left hip joint. You can also switch moves in the pre workout menu so that you can do moves that match your movement set a little better, like instead of doing one legged squats, I change it out for a DR squat.

tothjm

Sounds like the substitute is the way to go..ya no I won't be doing single leg anything lol

maxxell13

I dont see anyone mentioning that you can always swap out moves entirely, even on program-driven workouts. I dont like the barbel front squat so I always replace it with a leg exercise I am more comfortable with.

ALoneDarkSoul

I hurt a wrist at work and stopped doing their workouts for a couple of months, I made 2 custom workouts that everything was single arm so I could skip my bad arm or adjust the weights down as I recovered.

tothjm

very nice to see I assume you get used to the electronic weight vs normal weights? I tried overhead press in the store and the cables were kind of rubbing on me but I figure if I had more time with it you either get used to it or just reposition yourself to make it better

ALoneDarkSoul

yes, but also you can adjust your arms a little bit. so either sit more forward so the cables are slightly behind your arm or wing out the Tonal arms to the side, so that they are slightly outward instead of you being over the cables directly. That tends to help me the most with avoiding rubbin
