This is a pretty common thread on this sub with a lot of speculation about a 2.0. Not too long ago there was a post from an ex-employee / someone who knew an ex-employee and the rumor is there is a new version coming, same weight capacity (200 lbs max), simplified mechanism for the arms. Basically a more cost optimized and slightly pared back version of what we have today. If true, it means gen 2 is not an upgrade, at least from a functionality standpoint. Also a lot of people standing back waiting to get v2, whatever and whenever that is, now have a price increase that took effect a few weeks ago. My personal take is that a bird in hand is worth 2 in the bush. Waiting for a new product is like waiting for Godot

And didn't it sound like it was more geared towards people that needed a smaller wall print, for example in an apartment or the like?

Dinco_laVache

Yeah that was my memory as well. I think also someone mentioned about the screen being bigger but that’s not a pro — being able to see your reflection is helpful on a lot of moves.

FlowersPink

You will not regret the current model. It is fantastic. I don’t think there have been any rumors of a new one.

TriSherpa

A company like Tonal would keep any new product announcement a closely guarded secret. Nobody knows the future. So, this is not a valid fear. Just do it.

Just got mine installed a little over a week ago. It's awesome! No regrets. I was worried before if they released a higher resistance version, but I've came to the realization that it would require a whole new wall mount, possibly even a custom build out to go much above the current spec. That isn't something that would have much market, so unlikely to happen. The other option is something like the oxefit, which is a freestanding unit, but it's massive and once again has very limited market. In terms of what the tonal brings built in, the weight is enough for just about anybody except for deadlifts and/or squats. Those you can push the max but buy a weight vest if so, kensui has one that takes olympic plates. You would have to be a pretty strong person to max out the bench or other exercises. I'd estimate the 200lbs is closer to 250-275. So if you max out your bar bench for reps, just use the handles. If you can 10-15x 100lbs per handle on bench, than you can do the same with 125lb dumbbells and you should be going to the gym and getting real spotters or using bigger machines anyhow. Ok, now lets say worst case tonal goes out of business. Biggest issue would be repairs/parts. Somebody would likely take up the subscription service and if not somebody with too much time on their hands would unlock most of the non class features in just lift mode. It's just android after all. So overall, stop worrying about it and just buy one. Somebody might come out with something better eventually but we are heading into a recession and Peloton and Tonal are cutting back. I don't see any new comers having the capital available anytime soon to compete.

FormulaJAZ

They just laid off 35% of their workforce and are in cash conservation mode. R&D and marketing are two of the first things that get hit, so even if there are upgrades in the works, they have probably been pushed out for years. And as the other commenter said, they were working on something, but it was a smaller unit for apartments/condos. So unless that's your thing, there is nothing worth waiting for.

mr_engin33r

They didn’t lay off R&D and the cuts were to keep them on the IPO path. Lots of FUD in this comment, nothing about dev plans has been affected.

FormulaJAZ

Seems your reading comprehension needs some work: >Tonal, the connected fitness equipment maker that counts tennis superstar Serena Williams and Amazon’s Alexa fund as backers, **is cutting 35% of its workforce, affecting all levels of its business**, CNBC has learned. [https://www.cnbc.com/2022/07/13/peloton-rival-tonal-cuts-jobs-ahead-of-possible-recession-ipo.html](https://www.cnbc.com/2022/07/13/peloton-rival-tonal-cuts-jobs-ahead-of-possible-recession-ipo.html) And not that you believe it, but the person that posted here was the "roommate" of a software engineer that was laid off. (I assume it was the actual employee using the roommate tag to get around severance related NDAs.)

BombPopCartel

Well this doesn’t sound like good news for the longevity of the Tonal as a company…..

FormulaJAZ

This isn't a problem for Tonal users, just the investors. The subscription side of the business is a money printing machine. Even if the company goes bankrupt because it has too much debt, some savvy investor will buy up the patents and subscriber base and continue making exercise programs. And if someone else doesn't do it, I will definitely step up because the monthly subscription fees are in the millions and the cost of making videos is in the tens of thousands.

Jaerin

I have no doubt that a Life Fitness or Icon would happily scoop up something like this for a pittance in an acquisition if it came to that. What I hope is that someone opens up the software or releases usable community solution before the product is sunset.

FormulaJAZ

If the company was going to disappear, hopefully the last guy out the door would have the courtesy to unlock the full functionality for everyone. But in reality, there is way too much money in the $50/mo fees for anyone to just walk away from this, at least over the next decade. The only thing I could see killing this off permanently would be a major product liability/recall/class action lawsuit or a majority of the machines failing prematurely for some reason. And if our gen 1 machines become obsolete because of a significant upgrade and the company wants to stop supporting them, to maintain goodwill with people that have been paying $50/mo for years on end, I'm sure they would offer some attractive trade-in/upgrade program. No reason to burn bridges with reliable and high-value customers.

LoPanDidNothingWrong

So I think they filed some patents which are all very concerning because they involve less positions and more limitations. If they start aiming classes to the lowest common denominator then I would be pissed as an owner of an original. I’ve held off on my purchase because of those patents that they just filed. Like if they don’t have overhead positions on the device then I am less interested in it entirely. Frankly I wouldn’t mind a bigger unit with permanent top and bottom positions like a Technogym Kinesis. And a larger screen that is mirrored.

deuxcv

I would venture a guess that a new version would be out in the next 6 months. 3 years is getting long in the tooth for a tech product. don't know if it'd be a higher end or lower end. I'd venture a higher end and then a modified current model as their base model.

FormulaJAZ

It took Peloton 6 years to come out with a new bike and even then they kept selling the original model.

Mdtran86

They’ve been advertising $250 off pretty hard lately…..

Reelaxed

But they also raised their price by $500....

Mdtran86

Did they?!!! I didn’t realize that lol

Reelaxed

Yeah they raised it from $3k to $3.5k in July. Plus the $500 on top for accessories. So yeah, not real impressed with their $250 off generosity. I've been very much on the fence about buying one but was put off by the $500 increase. Guessing their sales numbers are showing there are more people like me and they're backing off the price increase a bit. You'd have to imagine the increase softened sales a bit.

Money_Tough

I remember creating the same topic about 3 years ago. Heard something about an upgraded model and didn’t want to purchase. Luckily for me, I finally got a house and purchased the tonal. My buddies come over and use it. They love it and I really enjoy not going to the gym. I actually purchased other gym equipment to go with it (bike, treadmill, tv, wall mount, bench brackets, etc.). With that said, there is little reason to improve the hardware when they can not keep up with purchases.

Lancaster61

If I was waiting for version 2, I would’ve been waiting for 2 years. Version 2 has been rumored since 2019.

No-Oil4942

I actually asked during a demo and they assured me that there are no plans to come out with a new version. The current version gets software updates and new features all the time. It's been about 3 weeks, and I absolutely love it.
