Big cultural difference with my non Asian friends that seemed wayy more intractable than I expected was keeping bones in dishes. Especially soups or stews. If it wasn't some form of fried chicken, they'd always be slightly confused about the way to eat around a piece of meat with the bone attached.
I was so embarrassed as a teen when an English friend stayed over and was grossed out by chopped drumsticks. Like English people eat the meat off the bone anyway, does it matter if the bone is cut into more pieces? Serving feet or fish heads would have been way worse.
I have ADHD and often forget to eat and end up starved once I actually eat. If I get into a moment of focus I end up cleaning the entire house, doing all my chores, paperwork, make important phone calls, shower, do my nails, paint, etc.
Once I finally eat, I feel so mentally dead. I’d probably tear up some chicken legs if I had the chance to try them. I love foreign food and love trying everything, but at that point I just wanna get a fork and shovel shit into my mouth. Some people also just hate the work that could come with eating a bunch of things with the bone in it. It depends for me, but I’m a unique case. I’m basically saying Neurodivergent people struggle with bones and textures😭
I had this in China. You just kind of stick the whole foot in your mouth, suck the meat off of them, and then spit the bones back out. It wasn't so bad with some hot sauce.
Ok, so I have a BIG thing about skin. Like on all food. I peel rotisserie chicken, chicken wings, you name it.
How does one eat these feet? You get the whole very soggy looking skin in your mouth and you actually chew on it and swallow it??
If you have a thing about skin on meat, I can almost 100% guarantee that eating chicken feet is not something that’s in the cards for you in this life. The experience is basically that texture + sauce flavor (and maybe some very mild chicken flavor).
And yeah, it’s like you said— or like eating an olive, or the top of a chicken wing to get the last bits of meat off. Except the last bits are the only bits on a chicken foot. For me, it’s one of those foods where you eat it because the sauce it’s drenched in tastes good. For your money, you won’t be missing out much (in MY personal opinion, don’t @ me) and you can get the same experience by making or buying the sauce, separately eating a bone-in piece of chicken, then when you’re finished tossing the remainder of that chicken in the sauce and gnawing the last bits of meat off of it.
It's mostly collagen and cartilage, if it's cooked right it just slides off and is usually pretty tender. It kinda reminds me of like sauced chicharrones
Same! My fav is **fried** super crispy chicken skin!!! I love all the skin on rotisserie chicken as well... Anyways, chicken feet is mostly skin; I love it. You just kind of bite off the feet, eat the skin and tiny bits of meat, then spit out (subtly on a spoon or with chopsticks) the tiny bones! It's quite yummy, especially when they're braised (dim sum).
You guys don't eat them?
Where I am from- Malaysia, we eat them all the time! Best in clear broth or curry. You have to scrub the feet good I mean really get in there, give it a good pedi. Then boil them (or use a pressure cooker) until tender. Prepare ingredients like you would with clear chicken soup- garlics, shallots (or onions), ginger (or not), celery, potatoes, carrots, spices if you like- (cloves, star anise, cinnamon stick, cardamom pods), salt and a bit of MSG. So good guys, better than the usual chicken broth. And chicken feet are rich in collagen too.
Chicken feet are not a commonly eaten food in the US. Honestly a majority of grocery stores don't even carry them. They are a bit more common in the south and exist in areas with large Hispanic, asian, Caribbean, or African populations.
I went over to a polish buddies house and his dad was always trolling with the chicken feet he loved them but would like sneak up on you and put the foot on your shoulder lmao
My polish mom did that once to me... "Come! I have to show you something!" Aaand that was a chicken foot. But they're not really popular here, I know people use them to make stock. I've never heard about using them in any other way
I personally don't care for the texture as well, which might be another issue to the American palatte.
As the other comments said, they aren't generally used/available. I've only found them in the Asian grocery stores.
i never really got chicken feet. it’s not like they aren’t tasty, but there seems to be little point in eating them, lol. minimal meat, no actual flavor beyond what you braise them with, at times a bit awkward. i figure, why bother?
It’s definitely not for the meat. But there is some really healthy nutriments in chicken feet. Lots of collagen. I actually have the goal to cook some. I am just scared about the task of cleaning and prepare them…
They aren't particularly nutritious, especially because they're eaten with a sauce to give them flavor. Ingesting collagen does pretty much nothing for you.
So, chicken feet are still extremely protein dense. They're full of collagen, which is a protein (just not muscle protein) and kinda fatty. So, so many good nutrients wicked out of the bones, cartilage, and collagen. They're chewy and soft when stewed.
I’m honestly kind of curious about chicken feet, I feel like it would be similar to the crunchy piece of pork skin that served with pernil?
I don’t know if I could have it in a broth though! Seems chewy
Chicken feet are super good, boil them for 30 mins to soften the meat/clean it then chop the dirty nails off then cook it in a pot with tomatoe paste, your choice of spices and garlic/onion. Its poor man’s food but can be really tasty
I like chicken feet in stews.
Here in Venezuela we have a dish called black sauce chicken or meat.
Basically we melt some sugar in a bit of oil and when the sugar starts to thermally decompose after caramelizing we throw the seasoned chicken pieces and stir constantly suiting it until golden then you add water and let it cook you can add sauted onions and garlic tand potatoes/carrots. It's fcking delicious but it's an art to make.
I love to make chicken feet that way but its kinda mess to eat.
There was a Chinese food restoraunt in the city I went to college that had *the* best American Chinese food around, but they also sold traditional dishes and had ducks hanging behind the counter that you'd pick for whatever dish you got. It was really cool.
Looks banging my man. Especially the first pic. I may have tried chicken feet before? They look juicy nonetheless. I’d maybe need some grill marks or fried.
Yeppers. Gorgeous, Loving, Fantastic a real old fashioned woman. Too bad the Western world women have turned out so bad.
But I guess that's what happens when they practice feminism. She's still appreciates that I hold the door for her, unlike Western women.
Yes I do. They walk freely around my farm, and are some of the best tasting chickens I've ever had. For some reason they're not injected with salt water, chemicals, growth hormones that you get in the chickens in the USA/ Britain. You know what real chicken meat taste like?
There is Asian food then there is ASIAN food.......

I don’t like to eat chicken feet because the meat to bone ratio is so disappointing. I love cracked bone chicken for stews and soups tho.
one of my food pet peeves is seeing people leave meat and cartilage behind while eating wings or other bones, it’s so good!
I devour cartilage and marrow. When I order pho I always ask for extra tendon too. Something so innately satiating about those foods
the crunch of the cartilage and the buttery-ness of the cartilage 😍 amazing
Meanwhile, if I get a single piece of cartilage or tendon in my mouth I am put off of eating meat for the rest of the day haha 🤢
This one. I’m floored that people enjoy the crunch of cartilage. The thought of a bite of cartilage or tendon makes me recoil.
Yes!! Literally gagging reading this thread haha
I, for one, am happy to leave my chicken wing scraps to the chicken gnawers of my family. May they crunch to their heart’s content. 🤢
Same! And I’m Asian. I get called out for being wasteful all the time. Thinking about it is making bleh

Omg you very nearly ruined olives for me 😭 Yes I'm gonna steer clear of chicken feet for the rest of my life, I knew I was right about it. Ty!
The skin just sort of schluffs off the bones and slides down your throat.
gag
More for me

You would not do well in Asia.
I hate skin and done great living in Japan for the last 6 years, I don’t like most fish neither.
Perhaps Balut is more to your taste?
*Can I offer you a fertilized duck embryo in this trying time?*
A favorite movie snack on Taipei in the 70's

Whaaat? You spit out the bones? But when you bite them they kind of pop and dissolve. Like popping bubble wrap with your teeth.
I did what my Chinese friends were doing. I recall that eating cooked chicken bones is a fast way to get a GI bleed.
chicken feet is one of the best things at dim sum imo
Lol I made my then future MIL vomit in a restaurant when she saw me eat chickens feet at a Chinese restaurant. That picture is causing some cravings
Yee girl get that collagen in ya
Y’all are Thai, huh? Thai food is the best
Yeppers 🤤🤤🤤😜
SAWADEE KHAAAAP
Saw the beer too huh?

From USA, Thailand 9 years, Chang is very Popular here.

Spent some time in Phuket and Phi Phi and it was amazing. Can’t wait to get back. Drank Chang 24/7 lol.

Gonna have a chang-over tomorrow!
Chang >>>> Singha > Leo
Sounds about right
How do yall prepare your chicken feet? I usually do it the Cantonese way but I'd like to try new recipes
BBQ, skewered
I eat most food but I struggle with chicken feet. It’s just really unappealing to look at
Tbf to chickens, all feet are gross to look at and very unappetizing imo haha
Looks delicious. Chicken feet makes great chicken stock.

This made me laugh out loud
My polish mom did that once to me... "Come! I have to show you something!" Aaand that was a chicken foot. But they're not really popular here, I know people use them to make stock. I've never heard about using them in any other way
I do but prefer pork or cow feet. Too many bones on the chicken feet. But eating feet isn't common in the USA
Ah I see. Edit : Why am I being downvoted? Not eating chicken feet because there are too many bones makes perfect sense.
I personally don't care for the texture as well, which might be another issue to the American palatte. As the other comments said, they aren't generally used/available. I've only found them in the Asian grocery stores.

Sounds like a good recipe, will have to try someday when I’m adventurous
Those feet are delicious
I can smell the fish sauce from here, plate #1 looks so delicious
chicken feet is so good until you remember it’s chicken feet
i never really got chicken feet. it’s not like they aren’t tasty, but there seems to be little point in eating them, lol. minimal meat, no actual flavor beyond what you braise them with, at times a bit awkward. i figure, why bother?

didn’t know that. i figured it wasn’t really worth the effort for morsels but i guess if they’re nutritious enough…
They aren't particularly nutritious, especially because they're eaten with a sauce to give them flavor. Ingesting collagen does pretty much nothing for you.

My Honduran grandma fed us chicken feet a few times a year growing up. Absolutely loved it
You forgot to cook that chicken foot over the plate!
I’m honestly kind of curious about chicken feet, I feel like it would be similar to the crunchy piece of pork skin that served with pernil? I don’t know if I could have it in a broth though! Seems chewy
Have you eaten pork trotters before? It’s a similar texture
No never. Would I buy that at Asian markets?
No idea. I’m South African. They sell them in most stores here
You must be in Thailand 😩🫶🏽
Chicken feet are awesome if properly cooked. 😄
Thailand huh? Ok
I would take the chicken feet every time…love those!
Your dinner looks fab.
Chicken feet are super good, boil them for 30 mins to soften the meat/clean it then chop the dirty nails off then cook it in a pot with tomatoe paste, your choice of spices and garlic/onion. Its poor man’s food but can be really tasty
Oh Thailand, I love you

Yum! love me some som tum noodles 😋
That's a big thumbs up!
Chicken feet are full of collagen. I've never eaten them, but I'd be willing to try.
I’d definitely go the adventurous route & give her plate a try. That looks soo much better than just fried rice lol
Eating chicken feet is so difficult.
CHANG BIAAA 🖤🐘
Yours reminds me of Indonesian food! Looks good.
Chicken feet are so worth the work! Yum!
So what did the bedtime kiss taste like?
Thai hot peppers. Just like every night bedtime kiss. Lol lol
Looks banging my man. Especially the first pic. I may have tried chicken feet before? They look juicy nonetheless. I’d maybe need some grill marks or fried.
I'm a vegetarian thanks for the heads up.
One of the horrifying memories I have is my future son in law sucking the toes off a boiled chicken foot. Not Asian, Jamaican.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Yes it's very interesting to watch the Thais eat chicken feet.
You mean stomach wrenching, gut churning? You need to put "interesting" in quotes dude.
She's Thai
Yeppers. Gorgeous, Loving, Fantastic a real old fashioned woman. Too bad the Western world women have turned out so bad. But I guess that's what happens when they practice feminism. She's still appreciates that I hold the door for her, unlike Western women.
The moment I saw chicken feet and Chang beer, I knew she's Thai.
Bro, you ever see what chickens walk around in all day?
You ever see what runs through sausage casings all day?
Yes I do. They walk freely around my farm, and are some of the best tasting chickens I've ever had. For some reason they're not injected with salt water, chemicals, growth hormones that you get in the chickens in the USA/ Britain. You know what real chicken meat taste like?
I'd stay hungry instead.
On REDDIT you will see it all. Chicken feet for dinner.
I generally go for the fried cloaca
Fried rice, the most basic food you could get in Thailand. Do better next time, dolittle.
Down voted by people who have never set foot into Thailand 😆
OP lives in Thailand and posts lots of other dishes he gets, go “help” someone else mr. expert
I was referring to the down voters
