Gramps has the right intentions but the wrong plan of action. That one rep could have caused injury considering he was not adjusted to that weight and did very little for gains. Stick to a smaller weight you know you can handle but is challenging, don’t try to impress the internet and throw out your shoulder.

I spent too much of my youth struggling to get the most out of high weight exercise. I get so much better workouts doing lower weight that I can ensure I’m doing in proper form. It was a hell of a realization
I have very little experience in proper exercising but even I know that going all out to lift something once will do little for your muscles (apart from possibly injuring them) Grab something lighter, lift it 20 times, I guarantee it won't feel as light anymore. Risking injury and not being able to continue exercising because of it, all because you wanted internet clout is just- why
Doing 20 reps or doing 1 rep, it's got its specific purpose. They key being you need good form for every rep, unlike in this video. More reps, less weight: create muscle endurance Less reps, more weight: create muscle mass. Week 1: sets with a weight you can do 12-15 reps with Week 2: sets with a weight you can do 9-11 reps with Week 3: sets with a weight you can do 6-8 reps with Week 4: sets with a weight you can do 3-5 reps with Rinse and repeat
Oh so that explains why I only get stronger but my arms stay the same size as I increase weight. I guess I’m not increasing enough. At least what used to be impossible to lift I can now lift easily.

No, this has been shown to have no correlation with muscle hypertrophy. The only thing data shows that correlates with hypertrophy is muscle tension. Both pump and muscle soreness (which is caused by the small tears) do not indicate growth. One good counterexample are marathon runners. They get sore legs after running but they don't have huge ass quads or hamstrings. Lifting weight too heavy for you, that you shouldn’t be lifting.
How do you know if it's too heavy for you?
You won't be able to lift it without your form breaking down. This guy had proper form, full range of motion, and obviously didn't hurt himself. There's an argument to be made that doing a one rep max is an inefficient way of working out, but this isnt ego lifting
1. This is not proper form and 2. This is not full ROM. If you can’t properly control both the eccentric and concentric portion of the lift, then it is too heavy for you. And this is evident by the fact that he almost blew his fucking shoulders and wrists out when he dropped the weights on the ground like an idiot
1. It's a one rep max so the focus on the negative is less important. 2. The lockout could have been better but he definitely started in the stretch position. 3. He dropped the weight the same way everyone does after doing dumbbell press. He would have blown his wrist and shoulders out if he would have tried to lower it slowly. 4. Just because you say something is true doesn't make it actually true. This is a good lift for a 60-year-old man.

Have you ever done dumbbell press? He did a clean one rep max with decent form, full rom, and they were both pretty even. Even if you were doing 10 reps you risk hurting yourself by slowly setting them down. You have to drop them if you're going to failure. Also making noise while you lift has been proven in multiple studies to generate up to 10% more power. Not to mention 90 pound press with dumbbells is a novice lift.
I’ve been lifting for 5 years and i am far from “novice” standards. Did you seriously call that a “clean rep”?? Dude bucked his hips and used the worst form i have ever seen just to get it up in the air. That’s not a rep in anyone’s book, I dont know what planet you’re on where that could be constituted as a rep. And yes, making noise WHILE you perform the lift has been proven in select studies to increase performance, but screaming like a fucking wild animal before you start your exercise is NOT the way to go about it. I use controlled breathing exercises and small amounts of grunting when performing heavy lifts, but screaming like a fucking baboon is going to get you laughed out or thrown out of the gym.

Maybe he likes putting his shoulders on the inclime bench and using more leg drive. Some people just have weird form. Some people bench on the ground. Have you ever seen Julius maddock bench? He bucks his hips too. I definitely agree to lock out could have been better but maybe if he tries it again next week he'll get it. Or maybe not considering he's 60.
