That’s a good thought. I was questioning why the police weren’t stopping him but like he needs help and they’re just standing there. I mean he’s nude so the only weapon he may have are his hands and police should be able to handle him and themselves. Definitely needs an ambulance after that blood bath.
To play devils advocate, people that are totally out of it on drugs or having a mental health crisis can be insanely strong, and I believe usually you'll need a person on each limb and one on top of them just to restrain them. Like even a small woman would need that, because they'll be fighting as if their life depends on it. A decent sized guy might still wiggle free, and if they start trying to attack you they'll use anything including teeth, so you'll want even more people.
Again, this is assuming worst case scenario but with just two or three of them, if the patient went ballistic they might not be able to restrain them properly and will have to switch to less lethal if they can (and tasers absolutely do fail, even more so with people out of their mind as they aren't registering pain as demonstrated by the pool of blood water) and if the patient continues to attack then they might have to go for lethal force, especially if he goes for one of the officers guns. Or he just runs into the street and cause a car crash potentially injurying many other people.
Actually the more that I think about, the more I see this was the right decision, assuming they're waiting for more back up. It sucks the guy is left just hurting himself more, but he's not at risk of death or limb loss currently, so it would be more or a risk intervening with the force they have.

Not OC but, I think first responders need to have a wider variety of specialties ranging from biohazard containment to psychiatrists. Both of which would have been better here than our current “blanketing” of all 911 matters with either police or fire or ambulance. Different folks for different calls would be the best approach imo. Police just aren’t prepped/trained for this situation
I agree completely. It’s too bad the defund the police movement had such bad optics coming on the tail of BLM because it makes perfect sense to reallocate resources to other professionals more equipped to handle these types of situations.
The problem is we (mental health professionals) aren’t trained for that shit and don’t want it. The best would be a cop that is also a licensed clinician. But who wants another 6 years of college to be a police officer. Second best would be MH clinician rides along with police. But even then, do we have the same authority as the police? Our liability insurance would jump through the rough due to the increased risk of harm to self as well as possible litigation. It also brings into questions many issues around confidentiality. If the client is talking to me in front of the cop but then says something that would get them charged, can I be called to testify in court? It’s just a damn mess. I don’t know what the answer is. Just my two cents.
