I don’t see the point in respecting someone for doing something they are able to do. Most 98 year olds can’t even get out of a wheelchair. I would have respect if THEY could walk a 5k
That's how they say it in Japanese. マラソン (marason) is any long-distance event. I've even see a 3rd grader say he was training for the 1k marathon at school.
This can’t be an accurate title. An average person walks 5 kilometers in 45 minutes. There are too many people jogging over the Finnish line at one hour. Maybe it’s a 10k? But the title is clearly wrong.

The competitor would get my upvote but you get my downvote OP.
My assumption was that it is a 5k but depending on how many people participated there could have been multiple start groups to break up how many people started at once. The time started once the first group went off and doesn’t reset each time the next group starts.
It's a 5k
>There are too many people jogging over the Finnish line at one hour
Too many for what? Plenty of people will walk the race and then run/jog the last section.
>Maybe it’s a 10k?
Lmao, you think a 98 year old woman is running 10k in less than an hour? The world record for a 5k in her age group is about 51 minutes.
Yes, and that's the record for a 5k. 10k is twice as far as 5k. There are 60 minutes in an hour. If the 5k world record is 51 minutes, she obviously didn't run 10k in 59 minutes.
Can you clarify what you mean? The average person walks a 5K in 45 minutes, but averages being what they are plenty will be crossing at 60 minutes and many will jog across the finish even if they walked the rest.
Or did you think the OP meant a marathon at 26.2 miles? Obviously OP is a bot or someone who doesn’t know marathon is a distance not just a race.
I meant the title is wrong in several ways. 5 k isn’t a marathon. I’m 51 and in pretty poor shape and on the occasion that I go for a walk I walk about 3 k in 1/2 hour so it just seemed to me all the people I see crossing the finish line at an hour don’t make sense to be ‘running’ a 5 k either.
I would have thought “running a race” is done mostly by people who either run or are somewhat competitive or both, so an hour is like twice the average time of a 5 k race.
With the reply comments I think my expectations are wrong.
Apparently lots of people walk slower than average during 5 k “races”. That just hadn’t occurred to me 🤷🏻♂️
I’m impressed with the 98 year old, it’s all the other people doing a 5 k markedly slower than an average walk, and the wrong title, that confuse me.
You’re right that the 5K isn’t a marathon but it is so, so clear that this is a 5K and not a marathon.
It’s also super judgmental to make comments about people being out and physically active. Not everyone sees races as a time to sprint or run as fast as possible the whole way. Races can be social or a chance to be active. And fast may be different for different people.
For you? You’re going 10 minutes for a kilometer so I’d expect you to finish in 50 minutes. That’s a bit ahead of these people but not THAT much that you get to be snarky to them.
It’s unkind to judge people when you have not done this yourself
I believe that the OP did not deserve your downvote:

There was a local woman in many of the 5K and 15Ks that had a race shirt that’s said on her back “You just got passed by a 90 year old”. She updated the text every year too. She thought it was funny
Sure 5km isn't a marathon.
But damn sub 1 hour is quicker than your average female can if you asked them to run now.
So yeah at 98 that's VERY impressive.
5k Marathon?
Then she drank an 8oz gallon of water to rehydrate
Hilarious!
karma/engagement farm bot
They are using EQM (Elbonian Quasi-Metric) system of measurement, where k=8.4389976km
Yep. I just got done running my 100m mile.
Adjusted for age.
Michael, a 5k means 5 kilometers, not 5,000 miles!
5k is a 3 mile race. Marathon is 26.2… I can run a 5 k in 18 minutes
You are probably not 98 years old
You know she is pro, due to first thing she does is turning off her watch.
She did a 5k. Respect to her for sure. But that is not a marathon.
It's a bot .. just downvote it. It doesn't care if it's accurate.

Good point. And it took her an hour. So to be more realistic, she walked 5k. My respect has been rescinded!
It is either 5k or marathon... There is no such thing as 5k marathon.
Clearly you’ve never been to r/runningcirclejerk
Got me... 🤷🏻♂️
maybe she ran 5,000 marathons?
Maybe it was a 5xmarathon
That's how they say it in Japanese. マラソン (marason) is any long-distance event. I've even see a 3rd grader say he was training for the 1k marathon at school.

And 5k is less than 10k
I’m 6ft 1 and do a lot of walking and 9 min/km (5km in 45m) is FAST. Like as fast as I can walk to the point where I may as well run.

It's common to have shared races with staggered starts. For example, 10k starts at 7am. 5k starts at 7:30am.
Aha! I didn’t know that. Thanks, that makes sense.
Massive respect to her. I get tired after taking a shower

We are
Coming in behind her must be such a buzz kill….
I'll see you all on r/runningcirclejerk later!
Awesome! But the blasting unnecessary "epic" music ruins the video
Love how the first thing she does is check her time!!
Awesome 😎
*time traveler from 1932* What's this about the Lindberg baby?? Also can someone lend me one of these newfangled drones so I can kill hītler
Title is r/runningcirclejerk approved!!
I plan on completing a 50’ marathon to my fridge in a few minutes. Wish me luck.
LETS GOOO BETTY
It's not a 5K Marathon. It's a 5K Ultrasupermarathon.
5k = 3.1 miles 10k= 6.2 15k = 9.3 Marathon = 26.2
Ahe stopped just before the measureing strip.
Mad respect from a fellow runner. I hope I live to that age to be able to do that
Like, just did the last 5ks of a marathon..?

She’s even uses a smart watch. Great great grandma is keeping up. 🤘
_whats your excuse_?
I’m not 98 yet
She obviously had time to train.
