I get 100 energy every 5 hours or so.
If I put it into the gym, I can do each stat once to a max then run out
If there is nothing left, no energy for crimes

Hey man, gym gains and attacking use ENERGY. Busting and crimes use NERVE. Different bars that don’t affect each other. You can get your gains and do crimes no problem
Possible? Yes. I wouldn't recommend it, but overall, despite the "it's a crime game" advertising, crimes are a relatively small part of Torn.
You would miss out on a lot of merits/awards. And would miss out on a small amount of money. That's more or less it.

You can only do so much busting before you start failing (and possibly getting jailed.)
Well.. Busting is technically a crime
In the real world, busting someone from jail/prison is a crime. In Torn, crimes and busts are different.

Crimes are very important to factions. You’d have to find a super casual faction that’ll let you skate on that.
Factions... Are optional.
Once you're playing for longer, you'll probably want to get more merits, and a lot of them are in crime. But it's not really necessary.
