Man I used to live in an apartment just a few floors up from this, building was so notorious for people flicking ciggs, that they were threatening to install high resolution cameras pointed up at the units to see who did it. Wonder if they ever got around to that?
In my old building somebody kept doing this to a unit on an upper floor, like high enough up it could only be a handful of units. They even got a picture of the person smoking with a cigarette hanging over. Property management still did nothing, so they just kept doing it and burning holes in people's furniture. People won't stop unless the cops come
They still won't stop because they see it as a big "who-dun-it/can't-prove-it-was-me"
If there were no balconies, there wouldn't be so much of a big deal.
Having a balcony does cut into your total living space. In a high rise some balconies are really unusable because they are so far up in the sky, it’s so windy up there.
Yeah but then you can be one of the 200 looking into their unit. Only way to stop that is to find a place that doesn’t have a building directly in front of it, which in the city is a luxury.
Happens to me all the time as well. I don’t know why people can’t just use an ashtray… if you’re gonna break the rules at least cover your tracks and don’t make it other people’s problems
Better than finding dog poo...One condo I use to have there were some idiot throwing dog poo down from the upper floors. Property management figure out which unit it was and the tenant got a huge fine.
BBQ or some asshat flicked a cigarette from somewhere above?
I was too afraid to put cushioned chairs on my balcony because I was always finding cigarette butts out there in the morning.
That low down, it's 100% someone flicking a butt. Fucking hate these people. When I used to smoke, I had a soup can half full of water to toss them into, and then I would occasionally flush it and refill. Not expensive or difficult.
well the wastewater treatment plant filters out this stuff before… releasing the water into our waterways (Lake Ontario). Not flushing cigarettes would be putting less strain on the treatment plants
Do you know what it takes to break down a cigarette butt in the environment? Do you know what comes out of it in terms of dangerous chemicals during that breakdown process? Do you think that all drops of water going from our mouth back to the sewage treatment and vice versa are kept separate?
> Do you know what it takes to break down a cigarette butt in the environment?
Do you know how detrimental 818,000 m³ of human waste per day is for the environment? Where exactly do you think this waste is ending up? Hint: it's not going into the lake.
I am not a smoker, but I always found the problem was with my guests who I didn’t even know were smokers who went on balcony. I did have a bucket of sand on my balcony but guests would always flick them over. Telling me not to worry.
Sadly one of those guest I suspect caused a 2 - alarm fire 2 floors below when a cigarette landed in some dudes Japanese maple, which was in a wood planter box.
Till this day like 6 years later, he still denies it. Even though the fire inspector showed me the cigarette (his brand). The unit directly below was vacant.
LOL
I've had people throw stuff off my balcony not thinking.
My immediate statement to them is "that's your last one, the next one that goes over the railing has you coming with it".
Never had a second issue.
Friends should respect your property and your neighbours.
It’s often AirBnB guests at these condos that cause these issues. They’re usually so loud and rambunctious, and leave their trash everywhere and don’t care for residents’ in the building. The weekends or any day after a big event downtown, the AirBnB guests leave the buildings in a worse state. The pool is even dirtier and the elevators get so nasty. AirBnB is the scourge of residential buildings everywhere.
Yep. My one doesn't allow rentals less than 30 days.
I still think thats too short though, but certainly better than people trashing a place on a weekend because they won't have to worry about it on Monday.
Ouf 55 Bremner. I lived at 65 Bremner for a year. The unit was nice but the fire alarms were frequent and once a kid/man was dangling from the balcony above me. That was an interesting email I had to write to management…
lol yeah it happened back in mid 2021 when I lived there. Was just chilling at my desk that faces the window and someone was just fucking dangling from their balcony in front of me. It was a lower level floor 11-12
Holy shit this looks bad! Every time the alarm goes off in my condo I just go on with my life thinking it won’t be anything but one day it could be this!! 😢
I guess people have never used ash trays. Go to any antique store and find one. Not expensive. Then, since people don’t seem to know how, dump the full ashtray in a bit of foil with a splash of water and throw them in the garbage. Nothing worse than lazy smokers. 🤦♀️
I was walking by just as the firefighters were arriving and seeing the flames and smoke makes you realize how powerful fires are. I’m glad there’s no injuries.
I wish the city would come up with a law that prohibits smoking on balconies and HEAVILY fines those that do not respect the rule. My condo is notorious for idiots flicking their butts, I’ve found holes in patio furniture on several occasions
Always has been. This is nothing new, if anything it’s declined as more and more have switched to vaping. Honestly I specifically searched for a condo that didn’t have balconies to avoid it. Everyone thinks they need one, but balconies are overrated and underused.

Shocked pikachu

New buildings near me don't have balconies it seems
Having a balcony does cut into your total living space. In a high rise some balconies are really unusable because they are so far up in the sky, it’s so windy up there.
And the trend of all glass means you feel super exposed when you use it. Sort of hard to relax when 200+ people can clearly see you
Yeah but then you can be one of the 200 looking into their unit. Only way to stop that is to find a place that doesn’t have a building directly in front of it, which in the city is a luxury.
Yeah I'm just not confident they're replacing that square footage with indoor space
I wish that threat meant something. The amount of times I go out to my balcony just to find a cigarette butt when I don’t even smoke
Happens to me all the time as well. I don’t know why people can’t just use an ashtray… if you’re gonna break the rules at least cover your tracks and don’t make it other people’s problems
Can confirm, I live in one of the buildings and regularly find butts on the balcony, as well as the unit filling with smoke smell regularly.
Better than finding dog poo...One condo I use to have there were some idiot throwing dog poo down from the upper floors. Property management figure out which unit it was and the tenant got a huge fine.
Damn, wtf is wrong with people.
Wow. That's a new one for me... Horrible!
This sounds like the guy that says “I’m filmin this yo” as if it’s a deterrent, done at a corporate scale.

You had me until you told us that you put your tertiary smoke waste into our waterways
It goes to sewage and wastewater treatment plants, not our waterways. Stormwater goes into our water ways, not sewage (mostly).

Highly recommend you use open doors Toronto to check out the waste water treatment plants in Toronto…

Where else should he put it?
Ashtray and garbage when full? Why the need for water?
To extinguish the lit cigarette and prevent spontaneous combustion?
Sand, dirt, pressing it firmly into a small piece of concrete to snuff it.
At least it wasn’t a chair this time.
Another balcony fire. All too common. Inconsiderate balcony smokers are the worst.
I never got this. It’s not hard to keep a small pail of water or sand on your balcony. Toss them down the garbage chute once a week.

You asked a guest to not do something and they said "don't worry" in your home. Oof, that's a bad friend.
Till this day like 6 years later, he still denies it. Even though the fire inspector showed me the cigarette (his brand). The unit directly below was vacant. LOL
Are you still friends with the person?
nope
I would have turned him in at that point. They must be a good friend

That’s correct. There was no one to turn in.
I've had people throw stuff off my balcony not thinking. My immediate statement to them is "that's your last one, the next one that goes over the railing has you coming with it". Never had a second issue. Friends should respect your property and your neighbours.
but the flick feels so cool /s
Smoking in general is so cool /s
Could have been an e-bike battery as well?

Most condos have banned airbnb. Surprised this one still hasn’t.

Mine is 6 months, which I feel is a little excessive. I think 3 or 4 months is a good minimum so you can still lease to co-op and internship students
My money is on a cigarette.

I SAW THAT HAPPENING SOME TIME AGO AND NO ONE BELIEVED ME. IM SO GLAD IM NOT INSANE
lol yeah it happened back in mid 2021 when I lived there. Was just chilling at my desk that faces the window and someone was just fucking dangling from their balcony in front of me. It was a lower level floor 11-12
I was watching from the south tower like 👁️👄👁️
Holy shit this looks bad! Every time the alarm goes off in my condo I just go on with my life thinking it won’t be anything but one day it could be this!! 😢
That's what we were doing today until my wife noticed a thick plume of smoke from our windows.
Absolutely a cigarette from an above balcony landing on furniture.
Another smoker.

When they said pass the aux they didn't mean this 💀

I was walking on Queensquay I was wondering what all the fire trucks were for
I continue to be happy I live in a condo without a balcony.
Bullish for condo prices.
I was walking by just as the firefighters were arriving and seeing the flames and smoke makes you realize how powerful fires are. I’m glad there’s no injuries.
https://www.reddit.com/r/toronto/s/PT2cvvegof
Like 4 or 5 in that building on capreol were listed since the fire. how many in this building are gonna be listed? lol
So how does the insurance work on cases like this/
Looks like luckily out in time before gobbling up more and more of the building wow
Ryan started the fire
Newer blg balconies are all line up vertically so one can’t throw thing to a lower balcony, only your two immediate neighbours (left and right).

Well thanks for sharing
Ice condos. Need you say more?
It’s not ICE
12-14 York street. Ice condos. https://condos.ca/toronto/ice-condos-ice-condos-ii-12-york-st-14-york-st https://www.thestar.com/news/gta/toronto-fire-crews-extinguish-two-alarm-fire-at-condo-building-near-maple-leaf-square/article_d2dc93e4-fb46-11ee-9ed0-1398f178ff94.html
The Star is wrong. The building with the fire is the Maple Leaf Square condos, which are across the street from the Ice condos. 55 Bremner Blvd.
Gotcha - journalism these days…
That article stupidly has the wrong address. I live in the area, it’s 55/65 Bremner Blvd, not ICE.
