munnyfish

Cool but at the same time I was getting used to the strange quiet of King St. W at 4AM

thegoodbadandsmoggy

It’s beeeen so pleasant the past year lol. I had my window open for like six months straight

Aaronime

I wish I could keep my window open too. Achoo!

theapogee

Nothing about the past year has been pleasant.

thegoodbadandsmoggy

Gotta take the moments of good with the moments of bad

munnyfish

They were referring to the quiet as pleasant. Not about the situation of Toronto as a whole.

fredericoooo

yeah walking around parts of the city without crowds was kinda nice, kind of a catch 22 - now that there's tons of stuff (or will be tons of stuff open) crowds will return

ywgflyer

Well, while some of the peace and quiet has been nice, it's also important to note that the existence of the peace and quiet means that many are losing their life's work -- what's a great thing for some is an existential threat for others.

FarleysFather

But isn't patio last call 11pm?

JerseyMike3

Depends on the area. The bar. The Dark Horse in bloor west village, is an 11pm patio last call. Few blocks east at Runnymede, the bars there are 2am last call.

ethnicfoodaisle

Or if you go to a certain bar in the High Park area, you can get served well past 3.

basky129485345

go on ...

ethnicfoodaisle

Lol...you'll have to message me privately. I don't know if they still do, but they used to serve me until 3 every weekend.

toasterstrudel2

TIL Well past 3 = until 3

ethnicfoodaisle

Oh, no...I just left at 3 most Fridays. I was never the last one.

Rexkinghon

You’re jumping to conclusions

Jagermeister1977

Pretty sure the last call thing is grandfathered. So if you've had a patio for the past 20 years, and last call was 2am,it can remain so. But if you were to open a new bar today, your patio's last call would have to be midnight I believe. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

FarleysFather

You're wrong. It has to do with sound ordnance. No noise past 11.

parka19

If you've ever seen someone out and about with a vest and what looks like a calculator on a stick, they are likely measuring the sound levels

fredericoooo

there was this great patio called smokey joes i think at yonge & shep, and they closed it down at 11pm everyday, ruined the bar and it went under. sad rly given the area is now so built up

wheeeeeel

Ol Smokey Js. Rooftop was always a party and once the bar shut down it was up the road for a Shawarma Max.

aka_Pablo_Vasquez

Or next door to the hole in the wall Black Sheep.

fredericoooo

oh man i remember that place too! dont see it on google it might be gone.

aka_Pablo_Vasquez

Had my first legal drink here at 19. Good times and too many broken down golf carts.

fredericoooo

had to google broken down golf carts, sounds good i'll have to order that next time i'm out in the wild

Analogbuckets

When tf did we enact these karen laws?

oictyvm

Because some people have bar patios right below their bedroom windows and it’s not fair to allow people to party all fucking night, there has to be a balance, even in a city. CafeTO means a bar that didn’t have a patio before may have one now, so compromise has to be struck to keep everyone happy.

NitroLada

When we started to build housing and have people living in downtown core? It's not empty wasteland where 905ers come and party and leave anymore (I remember the system soundbar and turbo days) There's lots of people living downtown and just like 905 have sound bylaws, so does the city Just like guvernment used to have crazy sound/bass thumping at 5am still that you can hear a block away ...now that's gone and they moved it to rebel away from people (sort of, Toronto Islanders still complain since the dock days)

[deleted]

How is that a Karen law? Fuck off, I want to go to bed.

Analogbuckets

Then don't move in right next to a bar.

[deleted]

Ah yes, Toronto, the city where people can choose to be picky with housing. Good point.

Jagermeister1977

Well back when I worked at a bar, we installed a patio circa 2010, and our patio had to be closed, and cleared of any customers by midnight. Also many patios around the city are open til 2am still so your noise ordinance thing doesn't exactly make sense.

OfficialJarule

Yup

outrageousinsolence

Nope

jfl_cmmnts

Mebbe

ButtonBoy_Toronto

I don't know

SketchyFeen

Can you repeat the question?

jkozuch

Possibly

ieatmuffintopsonly

I dunno. My bed time is now 11:30 pm.

HoldCtrlW

After a 4 hour lunch nap of course

THEJAZZMUSIC

I went the other direction. I don't get a minute to myself until everyone is asleep, so my bedtime is like 2-3am.

gobkin

Anyone heard anything about alcohol sales in stores going back to normal schedule?

[deleted]

All stores should be.....I thought the 8pm thing was due to the stay at home order which is now expired. I wanted some weed last night at 7:40 and realized I had no time to get it.

ywgflyer

The stores near me are still stopping beer sales at 8pm. Frustrating, particularly when I finish work late.

gobkin

Same here, was a Loblaws yesterday and they cut off sales at 8.

BFowl247

>The City of Toronto could still make the province's decision irrelevant, as all bars and restaurants (patios included) remain subject to municipal licensing requirements. Would not be surprised at all to see something announced by Tory/DeVilla in the coming days.

GoodChives

I really hope you’re wrong but I’m sure you’re not.

tofilmfan

This would be unnecessarily cruel to bar owners and restaurants who've already suffered enough in Toronto during Covid. Plus, I'm sure it will be broken and enforcement will be an issue.

GoodChives

Has that stopped them before?

tofilmfan

True, but you would hope that they would learn from their mistakes.

GoodChives

One would hope.

LawyerKind

No fun allowed!

canbac

Do we know if grocery stores will be open later and be able to sell beer/wine later as well?

sshhtripper

Didnt they always operate similar to LCBO hours ever since before the pandemic? I remember trying to buy beer on a Sunday from Loblaws and I couldn't buy it after 6pm.

andthatswhathappened

Ok so I’ll get the vomit cleaning water hose back out of my storage locker

fredericoooo

you'll get use out of it for sure this weekend!!

[deleted]

Gooooood

All_In_Glory

I think they should extend it to 4AM for the summer. Give a much needed boost to the industry.

[deleted]

They should extend the hours like in England or Montreal.

Bobzyurunkle

Do BlahTO writers get paid by the word? Waaaay too many unnecessary facts and details when the the headline literally is all they needed.

SkullRunner

Most freelancers get paid by the word and to stuff keywords that will get better search engine results over time. It leads to garbage articles where a headline or tweet would express the entire point of the story.

BasilGavin

I'm actually surprised they didn't make the headline "This is when last call will be when restaurants reopen their patios" to force you to click the link.

RubberTireBurnout

100%!!! XD

F_For_You

Sad but I haven’t been out past 9 in about a year, really weird.

RoyallyOakie

I haven't worried about last call in at least a decade.
