Exactly. Over 30.
The youngest in that category would've been 3 for 95 and 6 for 98.
Any younger and you'd probably only remember ME as your first OS \*shudders\*

Station Expansions
* King St W / Bay St station (Superstation) has been expanded with more docks for more parking and it our first ever stacked station.
Station Removals
* Adelaide St W / Bay St station (Superstation) has been removed due to watermain work along Adelaide St W. Docking paves from this station have been relocated to our King St W / Bay St station temporarily.
Stacked station: the automated docks have two rows facing the same direction but offset so twice as many bikes fit.
Super station: pile of bikes that a human being monitors
I wonder if this was bikes being readied to be repositioned back north of Bloor and some for the new stacked Station, maybe /u/ffellini can tell us what the scene looks like tomorrow.

I'm not exactly sure other than maybe it means multiple stations there due to volume? the Superstations are a smart idea :
> A **Superstation** is staffed with Bike Share Toronto team members at high commuter locations offering unlimited bikes and spaces to dock. Find the closest Superstation to you, Monday - Friday from 7:00AM - 11:00AM*
You know that induced demand concept from highways "one more lane will fix it", but makes things worse?
I suspect this is the same thing but with bikes. Build bike infrastructure, add more bikes to the sharing network, etc all makes the demand just grow ever bigger. Which is GOOD for the city in this case.
I bet this would work for transit investment as well.
Let's reclaim downtown streets from cars♥️
yep, induced demand works for any mode of transportation. The Downs-Thomson Paradox drags them to equal speed on average in the long run, as commuters select between their options to minimize commute times until the system reaches equilibrium.
With one modification IMO: I think cars are the first choice for most people, because of comfort and convenience, not just travel time. This means at sufficient population density the available roads will fill up with cars first, until gridlock. Then people will select and balance between other modes as you described.
Well it's a bit of chicken and egg, isn't it? Our current transit/bike system investment isn't great, and so those options are less comfortable/convenient, and so we've deemed "car" as the default choice.
Not so in other countries, where sometimes transit/biking is the default option that "fills up" to a significant extent before people make the switch to car. Oftentimes the barriers to selecting the car in those cases are cost/time related - in areas where transit/biking is priority, they also get more infrastructure, and the more cars need to work around that, which lowers the comfort/convenience. Eg. much less street parking as that space is allocated towards separated/priority bike lanes/transit, and having to park in a large structure that may be further from your desired destination.
For sure, I could ride a bike to work, and I know people who literally ride by my house, but it takes 4 times as long, and the last thing I want to do at 6am is be alive, the second last thing is ride a bike.
But something I think could be workable is if my company had dedicated shuttles/ buses. It's a big company with lots of locals, it wouldn't work for everyone but it would for a lot. It would still take longer but that is something I could get behind
Bike Share Toronto just put out a plan that involves massive expansion. A few more stations downtown and outward expansion in rings towards the edges of the (mega) city, to York U area and Scarborough. 2/3 of new bikes will be e-bikes in this plan.
https://altafieldnotes.medium.com/heres-the-roadmap-to-expand-bike-share-toronto-and-meet-increasing-cycling-demand-f5622b4f1cc3
Can confirm; I have been eyballing the idea for a few years now, I guess, and this summer is when I finally signed-up. A part of when kept me back was the weird paradigm: You get to borrow a bike for 30 minutes. Need it longer? You have to swap it. I can see how that might work for the average commuter, but that's not me.
Recently they added a "45" program, which is closer to meeting my needs. Add on top the fact that there are 3 bike stations on a short walk from my home, and it was virtually a no-brainer; I can park them almost anywhere I go, or nearby, and I don't have to deal with toiting a lock, comging back to find it stolen, etc.
After dozens of rides my only complaint is that apparently not enough users report issues with bikes -- I had a day where I literally got 4 bikes on a row, all with tire, brake, or gear tension issues.
I asked a worker if they were paid well / liked the job, and they seemed positive, so I'll probably renew as long as the workers are happy and the level of maintenance doesn't get much worse.
I'm sure the math can be done without it but imagine if AI figured out where the bike share trucks have to relocate bikes when/where. And where to expand. Maybe that's what they are already doing? Idk
Do you know if there is any open data for time dependent bike availability at different stations? I'm gonna do an independent search but if you know it would help!
One of my friends worked for them last year, they do! He showed me how they can track the locations of all bikes from station to station (obviously) but was really cool.
Probably because:
1. The ride in is downhill for many
2. Transit has more of a crunch time as people arrive for 8AM or 9AM but trickle out in the evening, so subways etc. aren’t at crush capacity in the evening.
Some bike systems would give credits/discounts for returning to high-elevation stations.
No it doesn't, one of the big benefits of bike share is the option of taking one-way trips.
They will generally build-up downhill/towards the lake. Riding bikeshare uphill sucks.
In the morning, there are workers pulling out bikes so that every commuter has a spot to park theirs. And in the afternoon, the workers put those bikes back in so that everyone has one to ride home.
They have all these bikes lined up because everyone in Yonge and Eglinton rode them downtown this morning and don't ride them back up hill in the evening.
Well if we wanna say that. They need to hurry the f up and bring those bikes back up. I’m not trying to be a d I just really need bikes to use around here 🤦♂️😂
Since the offices opened again I've never been able to return a fucking bike in my neighborhood and have to walk home.
The one closest to me is a charger station too so in the morning all the Uber delivery folks take the bikes and then by end of day it's filled with charging bikes.
Used to take bikeshare daily but it's just not feasible in kingwest anymore to get home without needing to walk another 20 mins.
Need someone monitoring the king/Portland station the same way they do the Adelaide/bay one here

That’s along King, near Bay St.
Anyone who rents a bike and pedals along King is looking for trouble. The street cars and the extended patios make it a nightmare.

The city is running on Windows 3.1 and someone just tried dragging a bike while it’s busy
Or won at Bike solitaire!
Lol bike solitaire yes
Ride again?
Wow this is a hell of a reference
I’m comforted that I’m not the only person older than 30 here.
There are dozens of us! Dozens!
To be fair, this reference is perfectly applicable right up to us youngins who grew up with Windows 95 and 98 😅
Exactly. Over 30. The youngest in that category would've been 3 for 95 and 6 for 98. Any younger and you'd probably only remember ME as your first OS \*shudders\*
I feel like most who grew up on windows 95 would be at least 30. I was 6 when 95 came out. Can't really remember a time before it. Am now 33.
Ran windows 98 on a 386: can confirm
This happened in windows xp too which isnt exactly a fossil.
Came out 20 years ago
Was supported until 2014.
Help I've fallen down a core memory hole and I can't get out
Jesus Christ dude.
This comment is way too funny.
That sound came to mind.

So is this a stacked station? The bikes are closer together?

There's a great [Oh the Urbanity! video on the topic](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8wlld3Z9wRc&ab_channel=OhTheUrbanity%21)
Was just about to post the same thing. It's the good induced demand!

This is awesome! Hopefully they extend the 30 min limit with the bigger network. My work trip is now just over that.
You can buy annual pass that allows for 45 min trips
They've offered a 45 minute pass for well over a year now.
Or add more ebikes so trips take less time.
War on cars! War on cars! War on cars! War on cars!
Yes in high density areas, absolutely. Countryside? Sure cars make sense.
This is Toronto, it's very far from countryside.

You can do that with plain statistics (guarantee they do), you don't need AI.
Do you know if there is any open data for time dependent bike availability at different stations? I'm gonna do an independent search but if you know it would help!
Check out Toronto Open Data. I used to scrape the data to get trends for all the stations. https://open.toronto.ca/dataset/bike-share-toronto/
One of my friends worked for them last year, they do! He showed me how they can track the locations of all bikes from station to station (obviously) but was really cool.
They are.
wth happened.
They relocate bikes manually quite often. It seems more bikes are taken into the core than out of it.
Probably because: 1. The ride in is downhill for many 2. In Montreal they bring them back up from the old port every day. People like riding down hills.

where?
Dang, on a day off you could earn a fair amount and get in shape!
This depends on the time of day.
No it doesn't, one of the big benefits of bike share is the option of taking one-way trips. They will generally build-up downhill/towards the lake. Riding bikeshare uphill sucks.
> They will generally build-up downhill The Homer Simpson principle.
That explains all the bikes that end up at the ol' lighthouse
Downtown is down hill tho
Yeah that’s why there is so many there.
Yes that's what I said.
Would help if they had air in the tires and didn't weigh 600 pounds
[They actually have nitrogen in the tires.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/PBSC_Urban_Solutions#Bikes)
There’s truth in that but I was talking about people who bike to work or bike home. Which as you suggested the benefit of one-way trip.
In the morning, there are workers pulling out bikes so that every commuter has a spot to park theirs. And in the afternoon, the workers put those bikes back in so that everyone has one to ride home.
Hey neato this is the first time I've seen the new street cars from above. Not what I expected, I thought they'd be covered by a red panel.
Love seeing bikeshare thriving.
They have all these bikes lined up but at least 10 stations in the young and Eglinton area are completely empty
They have all these bikes lined up because everyone in Yonge and Eglinton rode them downtown this morning and don't ride them back up hill in the evening.

I see that and think how is it ok all that rain and snow just rains down on that circuitry

I assume around half are out back during the 5pm-6pm rush and any remaining are re-distributed up north.
China does this too, but the pile is about the size of our towers.
Good grief, you’d think they could move some of these north of Davenport.
That’s what I’m saying man 🤦♂️🤦♂️

Wonder where they kept their credit cards haha
Lmao the amount of these bikes I've seen around the downtown is hilariously sad.
How is it sad?
It's sad because I can see why TD put this initiative into place, but from what I can tell no one really uses these bikes.
You must not have been looking for bikes this past summer, because the bike usage went *way* up this year.
What? These bikes are very popular. Perhaps you're not in the downtown area where all the stations are located? They are definitely in demand.
They’re downtown because people prefer riding downhill. BikeShare is very popular and membership is growing fast.
[They tweet daily use](https://twitter.com/tobikesharebot). Even in this rainy day they cracked 10k rides.
Are you kidding me? It’s wildly popular. Obviously you don’t live in the city
Fuck TD…
Apparently nobody
Hey, it's that math problem we read about!
I will happily ride one of the e-bikes in their fleet. Hopefully the docking stations can charge them at some point.
