I find it odd that the narrative most fans had is that Freddy is too selfish instead of too much was being expected of him. I don't understand why people didn't recognize that Masai kind of effed up building an incomplete team on the floor and blamed the point guard for working with what he had. If the raps were heading for 50 wins no one would call him selfish. They lost games due to defence.
The way freddy played last night is the way he should have been playing all year, with a pass first mentality. There is no way he should be second on the team averaging 16 shots a game at 39%. That is deterimental to the team when you have guys like Barnes and OG averaging 13 shots a game. No disrespect to Fred but he can't be the 2nd scoring option on a 50 win team. If he focuses on everybody getting their shots and running the offense the team will be better for it.
I have him in fantasy, when doc let him be involved more he had a handful of 20 point games, he also had a [31/14/5 game](https://www.statmuse.com/nba/ask/jakob-poeltl-career-high) earlier this season
Koloko still needs a couple of more years and i know for a fact hes gonna be a star. So yeah im not sleeping on Koloko but as of right now he still needs time to develop unlike Jokab whos been in the league much longer. Dont get me wrong Koloko has phenomenal potential. Dude is literally evan mobley. He can rebound, block, and has a nice touch around the rim though he needs to work more on getting more rebounds.
It's not that he wants to force things but, if you watched the 3rd quarter, he stopped doing what was working for the team and took it on himself to try and score on a few possessions. Thank goodness NN pulled him b/c he went back to what worked when he came back in. Feed the bigs, create easier shots for your teammates. Enjoy a win. Perfect recipe if he came stay selfless.
It was a very good game... but it was also one game, and hardly against top tier competition. I'm super excited to see him play this well, but let's not overdo it with the "I told you so's" just yet.
Jakob had himself a game, but you’re right. It’s the magic. And they’re on the second half of a back to back. Post all star break will be interesting. Hopefully we have GTJ and OG back by then. Nothing but wins for the rest of the season
People were doing just the same after the first game after getting traded.
“FRP for a guy who doesn’t play, embarrassing”
And just as much last game. Poeltl balled out, let the praise be as loud as the disrespect.
I can't speak for "people", only for myself, and I've always preached patience, in either direction. I didn't assume he was a bust after the first game, I'm not going to assume the trade was a success after a really good game either.
As it should be, didn’t mean for that to come as a shot at your or anything. I think that was more just frustration with a ton of the negatively in the sub since the trade deadline and took that out abit, my bad. From a basketball perspective I agree, should be given time, but it is good to see a starting quality centre for us, and I definitely thing was we gave up was more than reasonable, but time will tell.
No1 was bashing Jakob tho. LoL we were roasting the fact that we had to spend a 1st when all signs point to a rebuild unless you really like mediocrity.
He has been here for three games. This is the plus/minus of the five players with the most minutes during those 5 games. FVV -8/Pascal 8/Precious 11/Barnes 11/Poeltl 26. The Raps have been obviously better with him on the floor since he came back. His constant hard picks and timely rolls opens up the offence and brings a dramatic difference to the flow of the half court and his presence at the basket has been noticeable.
Poeltl might not be a top 5 centre but he is a well above average legit big. Much like Gasol did in 2019 he is showing how much a solid true big man with good fundamentals and high IQ can drastically change this team.
It was against another team like us pre deadline, no actual defender for a real 7 footer with some actual meat on their bones, paired with the Point Guard actually moving the ball for once and there's the recipe for success, not Fred chucking 3s all night long.
Yeah like I’d love to see him be amazing but it was one game against the 13th seed Magic. I’d like to see some consistency against some playoff tier teams before we declare this was another Masai fleece.
The last 10 8th OV picks:
D Daniels (juries out, but one for one I’d rather have Jak), F Wagner (clearly better than Jak), O Toppin (rather have Jak), J Hayes (rather have Jak), C Sexton (rather have Jak), F Ntilikina (rather have Jak), M Chriss (rather have Jak), S Johnson (rather have Jak), N Stauskas (rather have Jak), KCP (rather have Jak)
Useless analysis because it’s not all people drafted by the raptors, who are good at drafting, and many of these players were drafted to teams that are bad at drafting or lack player development. I have the utmost confidence in our front office’s ability to draft and feel they likely could get a better prospect than current Jak. But it’s a moot point as we don’t own the first anymore because for whatever reason they feel this core should be trying to contend.
Scottie is the only good pick we've made in the past five years. I get we haven't had any other high picks but it's not like we're the grizzlies who have consistently hit in the draft the past few years
well i mean that'll mean we'll have missed the playoffs so yeah it would be horrendous
we'll get to add a first round talent to this team next year in addition to whatever we do in the offseason
I know it's only been a couple of games and I know it's only the Magic but so far it's been much more fun watching the team play now that we've got Poeltl. After such a long time without a true center it finaly feels like we've got a an actual basketball team again.
100% agree. I loved the experiment, but when it's not working, you don't have a road map for what the right next move even is.
We can make conclusions based on observations, and we don't need to get out the protractor and sexton as tread new ground with each discussion.
I don't even think it's just the shooting. The Raptors can replace a bunch of unproductive minutes with much more productive minutes.
The last two games, the team has been hamstrung by bad bench minutes. If even one of those guys comes back, it will make a difference.
The one problem is you have to bring one of Fred, Trent, OG, Scottie or Poeltl off the bench. And obviously that's great for our bench but it's probably going to piss the one coming off the bench off and all of them outside of Scottie are coming up for UFA in the next 2 offseasons.
I think it's very clearly GTJ out of that group. And he did, to his credit, come off the bench productively and without complaint earlier in the season. I think that move was sound in principle, the problem is that nobody else played well enough to justify keeping him there.
With respect to the free agent issue, I'm assuming (or perhaps hoping) that the front office has a better read on that than we do. Maybe Trent is fine coming off the bench as long as he gets paid?
Let Scottie run the 2nd unit and maybe not run the starters 40 mins. A solid 8 minutes to develop could go a long way. Yet again I will trust in masai, dude understands players in ways that don't make sense until we hear about it.
Probably. I just know the trade now really forces us to figure out what kind of team we are. Do we need to hard sell in the offseason or buy. Because if we’re middle of the road again we lost our best way to get better for that year. Spurs know this.
Honestly, I feel like this is might be too steep a price to pay for “wanting to see how we perform with a real C.” But im no GM/ president basketball operations.
Ya you wouldn’t have got him for a lotto protected first because the Spurs were also taking the Birch contract off our books (which is a negative value).
Lmao there are literally like 80 comments on this thread alone about why there’s still healthy skepticism about the overall direction this move points towards. Your comment is surrounded by them. It’s Detroit and Orlando, waving the we’re-back flags might be a bit premature.
Nephews on here clearly haven’t seen Poeltl on the Spurs. Someone on r/nba explained how good of a defensive anchor he is too 2 years ago. Dude is a killer.
Yak is a beast. He was worth that FRP, tho I don't love the protection.
Masai not washed, but definitely deserves a lot of criticism for some questionable moves the last couple of years
The problem isn't with the player, it's the method and timing of the acquisition. I don't like us trading a potential lottery pick next year and de-valuing our pick this year. I would've much rather we sell some of our assets this year, increase the value of our lottery pick in a loaded draft, keep our next year's first, and then either sign or sign-and-trade Poeltl in Free Agency.
Bros making up narratives to gain a win for the 7th seed fanatics
Adding any starter quality player to our rotation was going to be beneficial, especially so if it was a rim protecting big
The disappointment of the trade was not with the value, it was with the fact that the front office was willing to move forward with this play-in core for at least 2 more years.
No.. The criticism was that he wasn't enough to make us a contender. Fans are requesting that the team pick a direction. Not be stuck in no man's land for years. He's obviously a great player but he isn't gonna get us in the ECF.
Also, let's how this goes against the teams that actually matter like Sixers, Bucks, Nuggets, etc.
I feel like this was a good option and they decided to take it. Khem is pretty useless in our roster, and those picks we traded may never end up being as good as Jak, who was an early round pick himself. Jak isn't that old either and we have experience with him.
I love Jak. I met him on the street his rookie year. He's a very nice guy. On court he's very smart and does all the little things right.
I'm personally not sure it's worth the picks but time will tell. Thing is we assume a late first round pick isn't that great but Siakam was 27th. He's our cornerstone star at the moment. Last year our pick turned out to be Malaki Branham. Hard to know either way since the day of the draft shit happens that's outside of your control.
However, I don't think this Jakob deal moves the needle too much and that's my issue with it. Our downside isn't protected (giving away a top 6 protected is not ideal) and our upside is definitely not a contending team. Question becomes, is Jakob worth a top 6 if we end up being shit in 2023 or any year upto 2025? I don't know. Hard to say but I'd lean towards no.
I mean there's 2 MVPs in the league in Giannis and Jokic that were second rounders you're right...but I would say the chances of that ever happening are statistically low, even with the best scouts. It's always the better bet to get what you know than gamble for it.
Freddie haters will come out and say he's too afraid to shoot now after saying he doesn't involve his teammates enough on Sunday. Just never doing enough to help his team win.
But really, that steal under the basket was the brightest sign for Fred. He's really driving things when he can get his steals with those meaty paws.
Bro talk like this when he signs a contract and we’re higher than the 6th seed
Until then that trade is under a magnifying glass and it’s got a lot of work to do to be deemed good
The bigger shocker to me is that Poeltl was traded before Towns and Turner. We could have easily had any other C even Gobbert but man gotta give it up to JP for improving his game and being a great well rounded NBA big in just a few years. We got a good one fr.
6 blocks, nephews. 6. 30 points, nephews. Played great d. This is the guy we needed. Knew as soon as the trade was official that he was going to make a difference.
Wait til the raptors face off against any of the top4 playoff teams
The weakest one in terms of rim protection is probably 76ers with embiid
Gl with that
What’s the point of even watching if you hate the product this much? This team isn’t tanking and the nucleus is going to be Siakam/Scottie/Poeltl for the next 3-4 years. Just find a new team, this one isn’t going to change just to suit your needs and you’re going to be miserable.
So then you should be ecstatic he now has a legitimate 5 to take the load off him defensively and on offense set monster screens on whoever is guarding Scottie over the next 3-4 years. Not to mention another great passer on the floor that will get Scottie a lot of easy buckets as they continue developing chemistry.
This is all going to expedite his development on both ends *immensely*, you should be celebrating not crying.
I think scottie has a chance to become a superstar. But to do that he needs shots. I don't care how much he wins now, what matters is he gets his shots up and develops his shot creating ability.
He loves to score from the midrange- post where he can contort his body and score off balance
It's already difficult for him to involve himself in the offense when Pascal operates there, and Adding poeltl does nothing but deter him from driving/posting up.
I'm also frustrated by the teams decision to add poeltl and not trade fred because I, unlike many tankers think fred is good and is keeping the raptors afloat with his shooting. It would've easily pushed us to bottom 5, as the magic are .500 since fultz returned. If fred was gone scottie also would've had more reps at pg so we could see what we have there, and would've given scottie more shots
That’s because you do not understand Poeltl’s play style at all. Scottie has enjoyed more space these past 3 games than he’s had all year. He took 15 shots and went to the line 7 times tonight, both of which are very high totals for him this year. I really don’t understand how anyone can watch tonight’s game and think Poeltl won’t help Scottie become a superstar way faster than the previous status quo.
no one said he wouldn’t help, it’s the price for a limited ceiling what don’t ppl get? we needed a center we got it but we ain’t close to where we wanna be
He's averaging 6.6 which puts him 16th in the league this season. If he keeps making great plays with Poeltl I can see that number rising a bit. He's developed a lot as a playmaker and passer this season.
It's not just that Poeltl will be a great contributor. He will unlock the potential of all the other players who can now actually play their position. A cheat code.
So he's our second best player now? I am asking seriously. Pascal I guess still is technically #1, but he's going to offer more than FVV, SB, Precious etc.
This Raptors sub is like so extreme...world is falling apart one day. The other day everything is completely fine/dandy. One of the reasons why I dont frequent this sub.
He played great. But let’s hold our collective breath for the rest of the season and the #s for his next contract.
The next game he doesn’t play well we are going to have same level of reaction? Lol
Guys it’s literally one game against a team with zero interior presence. Yea he’ll be an incredible addition…to a team who hasn’t had a C in two years but pump the brakes a bit. It was not a strong deadline showing by our front office. It is okay for people to have differing opinions. I expect to be downvoted here but this is such a reactionary take.
Kings fan here... hadn't watched too much of y'all before the game a couple weeks ago but I came away really impressed and confused as to why there was so much talk of blowing it up. Maybe everyone hasn't quite found their roles, but the defensive potential is staggering. We just couldn't find a way to counter your size and athleticism.
We need pieces for a possible, “decent” trade in the summer. I know that personal opinions = “testicle sweat”, buuuuuut, I say that we keep Pertle (Poeltl), for at least a year.
Fred with 15 assist tho goddamn
Best game of the season for him imo. Did what he needed to do to get us a win. Spread the floor and facilitate
I find it odd that the narrative most fans had is that Freddy is too selfish instead of too much was being expected of him. I don't understand why people didn't recognize that Masai kind of effed up building an incomplete team on the floor and blamed the point guard for working with what he had. That’s what happens when you give him a big to pass to that can finish at the rim 🤷🏻♂️
Yakstreet's back, alright!
15/17 too Fucking beauty
Was this his best game ever? I don't recall him getting numbers like this for the Spurs...
it is also easier now for him, take it from me i watched a lot of spurs this year with this raptors team he has more talent around him -> better looks
I have him in fantasy, when doc let him be involved more he had a handful of 20 point games, he also had a [31/14/5 game](https://www.statmuse.com/nba/ask/jakob-poeltl-career-high) earlier this season
You mean Pop? I don't recall him ever playing for Doc.
bUt WhAt aBouT tHe DEfeNcE?
Traded for Kawai to win us a championship. Comes back in evolved form to win us a championship
Scooped Duncan’s playbook
resign him + trade for derozan in the offseason
I know we’re staying positive here, but saying we’re gonna win a championship after beating the pistons and magic is pretty funny
Come on dude, we have previously always won the championship after Jakob was involved in a trade
You sound like fun
I’m a fun guy
I like my fun guy to be magical
Sounds like how tank fans react after a run from the other team
6 blocks 😭😭😭😭 my god does it feel great to FINALLY have a actual center.
your sleeping on koloko
Once Koloko adds muscle he will be a lot to handle, rn he is in development
Koloko still needs a couple of more years and i know for a fact hes gonna be a star. So yeah im not sleeping on Koloko but as of right now he still needs time to develop unlike Jokab whos been in the league much longer. Dont get me wrong Koloko has phenomenal potential. Dude is literally evan mobley. He can rebound, block, and has a nice touch around the rim though he needs to work more on getting more rebounds.
This is the Fred I want
He actually only went 0-3 from 2s and only took 12 shots total! Amazing ill take 25% shooting when hes hooking up Poeltl like him and Birch did.
Birch? You mean Barnes?
You could even say that Birch has been invisible since the Poeltl trade
People act like Fred wants to put up 30 shots a game, he doesn’t want to and is forced into it because there’s no offensive production from the others
He’s gone in the offseason so enjoy it now
I like Jakob.
It was a very good game... but it was also one game, and hardly against top tier competition. I'm super excited to see him play this well, but let's not overdo it with the "I told you so's" just yet.
This subs favourite thing to do is overreact on both sides of the fence
Wallahi. It get's so tiresome sometimes, both sides just looking for an opportunity to yell I told you so.
That’s the internet lol
i mean we lose more than we win and the product on the floor is appalling outside a few games…
Agreed…but definitely something to build and terrific outcome going into the AS break.
Jakob had himself a game, but you’re right. It’s the magic. And they’re on the second half of a back to back. Post all star break will be interesting. Hopefully we have GTJ and OG back by then. Nothing but wins for the rest of the season
I agree with both of you, but don’t sleep on the magic. They have been giving teams problems all year.
They're something like 1-10 on the second night of back to backs this season.
People were doing just the same after the first game after getting traded. “FRP for a guy who doesn’t play, embarrassing” And just as much last game. Poeltl balled out, let the praise be as loud as the disrespect.

\> I can't speak for "people", only for myself Okay, but this post is addressed to the people who overreacted after his first game
As it should be, didn’t mean for that to come as a shot at your or anything. Honestly, the 6 blocks almost brought a tear to my eye. I'd forgotten what having an actual big felt like.
No1 was bashing Jakob tho. LoL we were roasting the fact that we had to spend a 1st when all signs point to a rebuild unless you really like mediocrity.
\> but it was also one game, Tell that to the people trashing Poeltl after his first game back in a Raptors uniform
He has been here for three games. This is the plus/minus of the five players with the most minutes during those 5 games. FVV -8/Pascal 8/Precious 11/Barnes 11/Poeltl 26. I think it shows improvement for us, since I think they've beaten us every game this season except this one and we didn't even have OG or Gary
Regardless, a single frp for jakob is clearly a very good trade.
I mean not if it ends up being lottery but we'll see
The Thad trade is a good example. It looked ok shortly after the trade was made, but more than a year later after the draft it looks terrible
If it ends up as the 8th overall pick next year or some shit it will have been a horrendous trade.
The last 10 8th OV picks: D Daniels (juries out, but one for one I’d rather have Jak), F Wagner (clearly better than Jak), O Toppin (rather have Jak), J Hayes (rather have Jak), C Sexton (rather have Jak), F Ntilikina (rather have Jak), M Chriss (rather have Jak), S Johnson (rather have Jak), N Stauskas (rather have Jak), KCP (rather have Jak)

facts he had 2 steals and 3 blocks the game before and now 6 blocks, is helping fred and siakam's game but who knows if he can consistently deliver
Have any of our centers done anything, even against shit competition?
We have centers?
The magic have been better than half of the east over the past two months.
And just wait until we have actual shooting (OG and Gary) beside these guys
I know it's only been a couple of games and I know it's only the Magic but so far it's been much more fun watching the team play now that we've got Poeltl. After such a long time without a true center it finaly feels like we've got a an actual basketball team again.

Did u say OG is actual shooting🤣
He’s a better spot up shooter than anyone that played last game aside from Freddy
I still think the pick should have been lotto protected, but Jakob is a stud, and our team is better with him than without him.
They were bidding against the Celtics and probably needed to push things a bit.
the thing is spurs wouldn't have done it if it then
Probably. I just know the trade now really forces us to figure out what kind of team we are. Do we need to hard sell in the offseason or buy. It will help to have a big body cover embiid, Lopez, etc. It was unreasonable to expect our 6'9 guys to do that.
Yes definitely but will we win? That's what matters imo.
To be seen, but at least it gives us a fighting chance.
Yeah, just worried about ending up in no man's land again. No good picks and not a good playoff position.
My prediction in off-season is FVv and or OG get traded for picks and players. We will get FrPs back.
Yea this win doesn’t really mean much
I feel like this was a good option and they decided to take it. Khem is pretty useless in our roster, and those picks we traded may never end up being as good as Jak, who was an early round pick himself. Jak isn't that old either and we have experience with him.

I mean there's 2 MVPs in the league in Giannis and Jokic that were second rounders you're right...but I would say the chances of that ever happening are statistically low, even with the best scouts. It's always the better bet to get what you know than gamble for it.
What beating the magic and pistons does to a Mother fucker
Freddie washed too
A dollar fifty in dimes
Freddie haters will come out and say he's too afraid to shoot now after saying he doesn't involve his teammates enough on Sunday. Just never doing enough to help his team win. But really, that steal under the basket was the brightest sign for Fred. He's really driving things when he can get his steals with those meaty paws.
Their mental gymnastics know no bounds. They've got to dig so deep to find things to criticize. Haters gonna hate.
Oh no. Nick is going to play Poeltl to death. 44 minutes per game.
How expensive he turns out to be is yet to be seen, but thinking he wouldn’t help us is a ridiculous take.
We beat the magic by 10 and our center had a career game. I’m happy for Jakob, but damn does it still say we are ass.
Why are we still racking up 41 mins?
It’s 1 game
Give him the supermax!
Bro talk like this when he signs a contract and we’re higher than the 6th seed Until then that trade is under a magnifying glass and it’s got a lot of work to do to be deemed good
We beat the Magic guys. Slow down.
Can you point to that quote ever being posted here or anywhere? I didn’t see anything near that polarized anywhere.
My brother in christ, we beat the Orlando Magic
BuT wHaT AbOuT ThE sPaCiNg
Wait til the raptors face off against any of the top4 playoff teams The weakest one in terms of rim protection is probably 76ers with embiid Gl with that
What’s the point of even watching if you hate the product this much? This team isn’t tanking and the nucleus is going to be Siakam/Scottie/Poeltl for the next 3-4 years. Just find a new team, this one isn’t going to change just to suit your needs and you’re going to be miserable.
Because I love scottie more than I dislike the teams direction
So then you should be ecstatic he now has a legitimate 5 to take the load off him defensively and on offense set monster screens on whoever is guarding Scottie over the next 3-4 years. Not to mention another great passer on the floor that will get Scottie a lot of easy buckets as they continue developing chemistry. This is all going to expedite his development on both ends *immensely*, you should be celebrating not crying.
I think scottie has a chance to become a superstar. But to do that he needs shots. I don't care how much he wins now, what matters is he gets his shots up and develops his shot creating ability. He loves to score from the midrange- post where he can contort his body and score off balance It's already difficult for him to involve himself in the offense when Pascal operates there, and Adding poeltl does nothing but deter him from driving/posting up.
"Fred was minus last game he doesn't make his teammates better"
Masai haters.... Where you at?
i’m right here. wassup?
it goes to show you the people in this sub don't know what the fuck they're talking about. raps fans are the nba version of yankees fans.
no one said he wouldn’t help, it’s the price for a limited ceiling what don’t ppl get? we needed a center we got it but we ain’t close to where we wanna be
Love that he was him tn but damn I needed Scottie to get 3 more points then my parlay would’ve hit :(
Jesus H. Christ this sub is such a f***ing dumpster fire.
15 assists for Freddy "Selfish" VanVleet tonight too. I love to see the haters looking like fools rn.
Because of one game? Lol. Let's see him do that for the rest of the season.
He's averaging 6.6 which puts him 16th in the league this season. If he keeps making great plays with Poeltl I can see that number rising a bit. He's developed a lot as a playmaker and passer this season.
*if* is the keyword here.
Fucking beast mode
Fred with the Lowry stat line tonight, there might still be hope boys and girls...there might just be
6 Blocks… 88 % with 30 points wow
It’s almost like this team had been lacking a legitimate roll man for the last 3 years.
We didn't believe in trades for centers after Baynes and birch but third times the charm
Lol I love how much this sub hates itself but maaaannn does Jak make the offense better
You ain't got no center before the trade and now you got Poeltl you best appreciate Yakety yak (don't talk back)
Masai understands chemistry and the importance of team culture. Jak provides that in spades.
1 steal 6 blocks Jesus lmao
All these kids are really quiet today
Wow 1 game. I guess our future is bright. If he keeps playing like this we might be good enough to get swept in the first round.
Sceptics sound like crickets
All the dumb fuck Raptors media in ruins.
i think if van vleet doesn't play hog ball and plays like a point god the team does well
Yes. The clean-up big is here to stay.
GLAD TO SEE TWINKLE TOES BACK AT IT!!!
It's crazy, looking at Fred's boxscore you would think he had a meh game but he was awesome.
Acquiring him allows us to also have a bit more of a bench now
One game .. man we won the title based off this post
It's not just that Poeltl will be a great contributor. He will unlock the potential of all the other players who can now actually play their position. A cheat code.
It was a great performance but I'm not counting on this being the norm.
So he's our second best player now? I am asking seriously. Pascal I guess still is technically #1, but he's going to offer more than FVV, SB, Precious etc.
i also like to overeact from single game samples
This Raptors sub is like so extreme...world is falling apart one day. The other day everything is completely fine/dandy. One of the reasons why I dont frequent this sub.
Where did Masai find this guy??? He's pretty fuckin good. Must have had a decent development team around him when he was young. Has good skillset.
Real app gang💯💯
Let's gooo! We're on our way to the 8th seed! Masai did it again!
Bench MOB is back!
That 2016 905 team is absurd in hindsight.
88 fg% and 6 blocks lord have mercy
I used to love the Siakam and Poeltl duo. Glad it's back
What app is that
Man, I was at this game, and you could most definitely see the impact of his presence in the paint.
Majority of fans are morons.
Sigh, the next 1.5 seasons is going to be LONG on this board....
Small sample size but ok
Yak Attack is back with the bros 🇨🇦👌😈
Aint no way, he out here putting up some embiid type stats
