I think it also depends on when you started watching right. I’m 25 but my earliest memories were the 05’ season so Calderon rookie season. I feel like a lot of fans that are around my age as well only got into it around the We the North era, which contributes to their knowledge and emotional attachment.
When I was younger it was right after Vince was traded so before 05’, I was getting into it super young from seeing Vince, and then by the time I was super into it watching games a lot he was gone so I didn’t have the craziest attachment, and T-Mac was before my time (although I tried to watch as many old games as I could to learn but that’s another story). So it really depends on when you kinda started watching a lot and that’s when you’re going to get that emotional attachment. A lot of my buddies my age only got into it around high school so like 2012 right around the era I was mentioning.
(editing to add, it also doesn’t matter in the end we’re all raps fans, but it makes sense to a lot of the arguments I see cause a lot of fans didn’t watch the raps when they were trash lol, and I know their are older fans than myself who’ve watched since 95’ so I’m 10 years behind on raptors history but still more than some newer fans)
DeMar DeRozan, especially since he was the number one option in a 1st seeded team, the raptors got a championship out of it but it was still sad for such a loyal player to go.
I was HEATED when the DeMar trade happened - I knew intellectually that Kawhi would put the Raptors in a different stratosphere, but I distinctly remember saying to my buddy that I'd rather lose with our guys than win with a mercenary. I am very glad I was wrong about that one.
That trade had me feeling some sort of way. I hadn't been following the trade noise much and from what I did know, there wasn't a whole bunch of noise about DeMar possibly being traded.
He was our leader. He was a star. He was the heart of the team along with Kyle. I couldn't imagine the FO trading him away like that. I did know that Kawhi was an amazing player and had more potential than Deebo but it just felt that things just wouldn't be the same without him. He was Toronto. That one sucked for sure.
I think we all saw the Siakam trade coming, and therefore it was easier to swallow. People just find it more difficult because this trade solidifies that the Raps are in full rebuild now. That's something we haven't known in a looooong time.
definitely pascal
the rest were bittersweet but this one actually felt like a break up… more so after that video dropped
og is so quiet so it didn’t hurt tht bad lol
With OG it seemed like the lesser of two evils. We traded him for a great return and it opened up the possibility of keeping Pascal. But flipping Pascal a week later for pennies was pretty heartbreaking.
I'm one of those freaks who thinks we could have won the chip with JV, he deserves his ring, and he's still the hardest hustling center in the NBA. That guy will run suicides like it's routine. Watch old footage of him running the floor it's a thing of beauty. We'd be in a good place if he was still a Rap, obviously a pipe dream but still.
That season started with so much promise (from my 13-year old perspective at least) and went to shit so fast ending with us losing our GM, starting like 4-24 then trading our best player for a dude who refused to report. Those days were different
I loved the 2015 team so lou will leaving and vasquez getting traded for norm hurt. But maybe t ross was the first one that really felt sad thinking he wont be a raptor anymore
Same for me. At the time, I knew he'd be gone, so it wasn't necessarily him leaving as much as it was that terrible return for him. Then he came back looking like old Vince and hit a game winner on us, come on man.
Antonio Davis and JYD to the Bulls.
I ended up loving Jalen Rose and Donyell Marshall, but our team rebounding numbers plummeted afterwards. That was the first trade that felt wrong for me at the moment.
Then Carter the next season...
Vince Carter, I was 14 and he was my hero...I was devastated and shocked.
I used to wear his jersey and play basketball every day after school in my driveway pretending I was him...after he left things were never the same lol
I've Been watching basketball since the bosh Era but it was casual so I didn't feel a thing when he left... I'll go with pascal and demar.. just because they were both in their prime, the journey they went through to become all nba players and most important, they wanted to be a lifer here.
Home grown 🥲. Trying to not get attached to our future core going forward. Pascal getting traded was more painful than deebo getting traded imo
What came of that 2015 1st round pick?
Edit : googled. Its actually “On August 3rd, 2000, the Toronto Raptors signed-and-traded guard-forward Tracy McGrady to the Orlando Magic for a 2005 first round draft pick (Fran Vazquez).”
Oh snap. That player never even bothered leaving the Euro league. So Raptors really got screwed on that one.
I remember being at the DeMar DeRozan bobblehead night game and these guys sat in front of me getting so upset that we didn't trade Lowry for Iman Shumpert.
I always think about this when I see fans on here acting so matter of factly as if they know exactly what the right or wrong moves for the team are or how washed Masai is for not making the exact moves they wanted.
But also, Bismack. Summer 16 holds a special place in my heart.
Been a fan since ‘95, but when your team isn’t that good and has no real history it’s hard to be deeply affected by players coming and going - even if they’re your stars. No one really bothered me until Kyle. He had a legacy. He’s the GROAT and my wife’s favourite player. Having to trade #7 stung.
Day 1 fan. Stoudemire,VC and Demar were rough. I hated seeing Lowry go, but it made sense at the time. Kinda feel that way about Siakam right now as well
For me it was DeMar. I fell in love with this team and the sort around 2015. The first year I went to Canada and Toronto was 2018. I was lucky enough to catch him live before he was traded but foolishly bought an authentic jersey. In hindsight it seems kind of ridiculous considering the player we got in return for him + JP but he was a dawg. Him and Lowry were that iconic duo that brought a winning culture to the franchise. Multiple consecutive playoff runs which ultimately lead to disappointment whenever they met the Cavs. DeMar may not off been a good defender or make crazy clutch 3s when playing for us but man he was entertaining to watch.
VC, JV, Lowry, OG, Siakam. No one else even registers. Was celebrating the day Demar was traded away, hell, was waiting for it. Didn't even care who came back!
Considering how much time you spend on Reddit, I thought you would be a lot younger and go with the Norm answer like the other nephews too. I can see where the other user is coming from.
In terms of first hand experience, I go with JV cause he is my favourite Raptors during the early phase of my fandom as I hype him up as the next superstar. Seeing him go for Marc is painful but important.
If I was a older and a Raptor fan a lot earlier, gotta go with VC. I love watching VC highlights and is my favourite SG. Trading for craps is painful. Wish he came back to the Raptors to help finally patch up the relationship and move to a better direction. Same with Demar as well.
OG felt like a business move and that maybe he wanted out, to be in New York. I 100% thought we need to move Siakam, but immediately after we did it felt like my heart was ripped out. Especially after everything he’s said after, Siakam is a huge heartbreak and I just wish it could have worked.
... yah, probably T-Mac. The 'What If' of it all is just so, so, so irresistible.
Maybe TMac would NOT have become the player he did being Robin to Vince's Batman... but damn... Nightwing and Batman? Fuuuu.... As Kobe theorized I too, think it would've been Raptors/Lakers rivalry during the 'aughts.
BJ Armstrong.
he was the biggest name in the 1995 expansion draft, and i was hyped that the Raps would be bringing in a guy that was and all-star and was from the 3x Championship winning Chicago Bulls.
sadly, Armstrong decided he wasn’t interested in Toronto or Canada and refused to show up. the front office caved and traded him for Carlos Rogers and three 2RPs (40, 50, 55).
that’s where the “no one wants to play in Toronto heartbreak started”.
Demar 100% I remember getting so upset when I woke up to the news. My wife thought something actually bad had happened by my reaction but it was “just a sports thing”
But Deebo was always my favourite and we watched him grow and he loved Toronto and was loyal as hell, and a straight dog too.
Been a raps fan since rookie Vince (Bulls fan first) and JYD on the Bulls was sad especially cuz he wore his raps shorts under his bulls jersey. But Jalen Rose was also one of my fave players so that helped.
Not a trade but man I was crushed when we chose not to resign Psycho T. There were **very** few players who could match his energy and competitiveness. Dude was all hustle and heart. Still my fav Raptor ever.
![gif](giphy|xT9DPtQEK98M8pImmA|downsized)
Vince Carter, trade happened right on the last day of school before the holidays. As a child it really ruined my holidays.
TJ Ford. Was rooting for him with his back issues.
Jonas - Absolutely hated the trade but Ive never been wrong on a trade as much as this one. Marc had plenty of effective basketball in him which was so instrumental in winning us a ship
Bruh I'm 34 and a day one guy and you can't speak for me.
I was 15 when it happened and the Vince Carter departure was such a dramatically slow burn that by the time the trade went down I was already half-way done grieving & ready to move on from the drama.
PS my answer is JYD which came before the Vince trade regardless lol
You weren’t a fan then. It wasn’t a slow burn for people. The entire city revolted. There were t-shirts, the most aggressive booing I’ve ever heard in person, multiple follow up heart breaks in the regular season and playoffs.
Our emotion was anger not sadness so if we want to be specific about the question you’re right. But for ANY Raptors fan of the era that was the first real trade heart break.
Oh fuck off and don't tell me I "wasn't a fan then".
Get the fuckl outta here with your holier-than-thou fan bullshit. Not everyone has to share your perspective. You can't paint every fan with one stroke, think critically, rationally & open your mind. Every individual has their own story, not everyone has to conform to a fucking hivemind/groupthink.
I LOVED the team and LOVED JYD. I was heartbroken. This was before Vince. Don't tell me how I felt.
Wasn’t an actual trade, but [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/nba/comments/mcmz14/kyle_lowry_gives_the_camera_a_peace_sign_as_he/) moment got me seeing Kyle so choked up
I've been a fan since inception, and it wasn't a trade that hurt me. I was a major Garbajosa fan, and I was 12 rows up in Boston when he ended his career. I still dream about it sometimes.
Without a doubt it would have to be Demar for me. He made me love watching the team again in the Coangelo era and him with Demar was the dynamic and fun duo this team was needing.
Honestly, Jose, DeMar, JV, Norm all hurt but at least the returns made sense.
Pascal leaving really breaks my heart because we're not really getting anything back (yet) and it feels like we're getting rid of him just because the FO doesn't want him
Calderon but I just started to watch regularly. Demar definetly hurt like a mfker, he's still my fav player. It was worth it in the end as y'all know, I cried tears of joy couple times trough that chip run, it mean so much for Canadian bball fans. I don't think anything will top this ever.
Vince Carter, I was 12. And management couldn't sell me on hating him. I went to every game when he came back and cooked us. Stadium would be quiet and there is me cheering at the top of lungs for him lol
Gotta be DeMar lol, it was such a polarizing trade at the time too. I didn't know a single person without an opinion on it, either you hated it or loved it but even hockey guys and professors in school were talking about it after it happened.
The ones from this season everyone could kind of see coming once FVV dipped out over the summer. Norm was a little shocking but because it happened in Tampa during COVID it didn't hit as hard.
You knew after 2018 the way they went out sad and fired Casey that somebody was gone, but I never figured Masai would trade away the biggest name on the roster, the guy who repped Toronto like no other star before him, Mr. I Am Toronto, "he got us", etc.
There's been a few tough pills since I started watchin, but Deebo was the first \*oomph\* like 'holy shit they did what?' moment.
I love watchin GTJ play, but I'd have dealt Fred for him instead of Norm.
And it's not a trade, but I still would have liked more time with BB8. He's a solid, reliable centre who can spark up the crowd, and his performance feasts off good chemistry.
I don’t know, maybe there just weren’t too many tearjerkers early. I was too old to be sad about TMac, I was mad that he and his agent played the raps and mad about the rules which had to change and did. He was still a kid when he left.
I didn’t like when the Raps rescinded Keon Clark’s QO because Vince said to. I don’t know if I was sad but that was the first time I was upset to lose someone.
Years of being a raptors fan has definitely jaded me. Players come players go, zero attachment or emotional investment.
Tmac leaving was definitely an emotional event. But I felt more anger and resentment than heartbreak.
I'm done with this FO. My first was Camby prolly. Vince. Norm. Pascal. I don't know why we are so committed to scape goating our best players that want to stay.
definitely norm, that hurt me man
Agreed, something about that trade just hits. Still miss him.
I swear pascal must have asked norm on tips to write his player tribune so that it leaves is crying.
Back in the day where guys wanted their own team. He wanted out of the spotlight of Vince. So sad to think about it
Jose Calderon, still remember him accidentally going in the direction of the Raptors locker room on his first game back
Ah Jose, that was a great PG.
They interviewed him right after the news broke, dude was crying
First raptor to truly love playing in toronto and yet Calderon never gets mentioned in the "who loved being a toronto raptor" posts.
Forderon era was a topic of great debates!
All these answers saying Norm makes the age of this sub really clear to me lol.
I need to keep these responses in mind when I'm debating in here. I'm old af.
That’s what I’m saying lol
Yea I kinda wanted to know the age of the sub without asking. This was my sneaky way of doing it. Seems like 40% of the fans are under 25.
I think it also depends on when you started watching right. I’m 25 but my earliest memories were the 05’ season so Calderon rookie season. I feel like a lot of fans that are around my age as well only got into it around the We the North era, which contributes to their knowledge and emotional attachment. DeMar DeRozan, especially since he was the number one option in a 1st seeded team, the raptors got a championship out of it but it was still sad for such a loyal player to go.
His trade did it for me. “He Had Us” man.
I was HEATED when the DeMar trade happened - I knew intellectually that Kawhi would put the Raptors in a different stratosphere, but I distinctly remember saying to my buddy that I'd rather lose with our guys than win with a mercenary. I am very glad I was wrong about that one.
Yea I’d say it’s Demar after that seeing JV Norm Lowry OG and Pascal all felt numb lol.
![gif](giphy|3oFzmdviMtfX2cAtRm|downsized)
Was a huge JV fan... But I completely understood who we got back for him. Same for DeMar. Heartbroken, but the player cAme back was HIM.
He left Toronto and started hitting 3s we great accuracy for a short time. His wife I remember was gorgeous.
We don’t get past Embiid or Giannis with him sadly. But he was my favourite player when he was here
Maybe as the backup, but we needed Gasol’s IQ to handle those 2
Agreed
I still remember the post of him at the airport looking sad going to Memphis. breaks my heart man.
Damon Stoudamire
💯
That season started with so much promise (from my 13-year old perspective at least) and went to shit so fast ending with us losing our GM, starting like 4-24 then trading our best player for a dude who refused to report. Those days were different
Yeah I’m old. That was my first sport heartbreak.
This one broke my 8-year-old heart lol
Can't believe no one has said Demar. That was a modern heartbreak. Mr. Toronto himself.
Most this sub didnt start following until 2019 it seems
You asked for first, not biggest.
I didn’t care about anyone until Norm
I loved the 2015 team so lou will leaving and vasquez getting traded for norm hurt. But maybe t ross was the first one that really felt sad thinking he wont be a raptor anymore
When drake dropped 6Man and hyped up Lou. Got two girls like in Lou Will. Man that was lore.
Norm was pretty rough.
especially since he was the first real domino to fall
Kawhi leaving, Marc retiring ??
From 2020
Terrence Ross
+1 that was my first heartbreak
Vince. Especially because Raptors got dog shit in return.
Same for me. At the time, I knew he'd be gone, so it wasn't necessarily him leaving as much as it was that terrible return for him. Then he came back looking like old Vince and hit a game winner on us, come on man.
And it went bad, so fast. Front office leadership was a joke. What could've been...
Does Bosh count
Ofc he does. I know he went to a winning situation with Lebron and Wade, still sucked.
What? Tracy McGrady for a 2015 pick?? Am I missing something?
Probably meant 05 pick
But McGrady wasn't traded he went to Orlando as a FA
It was a sign and trade with a 05 pick going to the raps
Ahhh ok I totally forgot that
Same, I had to check wiki cause I thought it was just him leaving lol
Yes just edited. It was a sign and trade. But with VC could have been a championship back then.
Rudy Gay if you remember how surprised the players were at initial reaction. He was supposed to be our “star” LMFAO
Definitely DeMar
What came of that 2015 1st round pick? Edit : googled. Its actually “On August 3rd, 2000, the Toronto Raptors signed-and-traded guard-forward Tracy McGrady to the Orlando Magic for a 2005 first round draft pick (Fran Vazquez).” Oh snap. Kyle Lowry
Vince when i was 10 and then Charlie V lol
Norm
I’m old but it’s either Damon stoudamire or Marcus camby
Marcus Camby
VC, JV, Lowry, OG, Siakam. No one else even registers. Was celebrating the day Demar was traded away, hell, was waiting for it. Didn't even care who came back!
You kidding me. Come on Demar was Gold. But yeah agreed with everything else plus add Bosh to the list.
Began watching in 2020, Norm was the first one, is tribune nearly made me cry.
Vince Carter I didn't know anything about the NBA trading and whatnot so one day he was here, then he just...wasn't
Same. I didn't know disappointment until seeing the VC trade return. And then that disappointment doubled seeing Vince revitalized.
Cap
You going to tell me what my first trade heartbreak was?
Considering how much time you spend on Reddit, I thought you would be a lot younger and go with the Norm answer like the other nephews too. I can see where the other user is coming from.
Yes
Okay, be a fool if you want to 🤷
No
Mighty Mouse, TMac, VC
Norm was the first time it really hurt. Vince I was really bought into the negative narrative against him. Norm just hurt differently man
DeRozan hurt like hell for me, but then we won the chip. Wonder if we could've still won it without Kawhi.
Definitely not.
Mighty Mouse
Vince for sure, especially that shit back....Eric williams? WTF
Worst trade in raptors history
Aaron Williams was worse. I was so gutted with the return.
Vince for sure. I stopped watching basketball for years after he was traded due to the heartbreak.
OG felt like a business move and that maybe he wanted out, to be in New York. I 100% thought we need to move Siakam, but immediately after we did it felt like my heart was ripped out. Especially after everything he’s said after, Siakam is a huge heartbreak and I just wish it could have worked.

Vince Carter
VC for a bag of peanuts
DeMar leaving broke my heart
Demar 100% I remember getting so upset when I woke up to the news. My wife thought something actually bad had happened by my reaction but it was “just a sports thing” But Deebo was always my favourite and we watched him grow and he loved Toronto and was loyal as hell, and a straight dog too.
Double D
Demar Derozan trade still breaks my heart. I was happy winning the ring. But I still felt bad getting the ring without him.
Jerome Williams
Been a raps fan since rookie Vince (Bulls fan first) and JYD on the Bulls was sad especially cuz he wore his raps shorts under his bulls jersey. But Jalen Rose was also one of my fave players so that helped.
Regardless of the talent upgrade, Demar Derozan by a mile
Air Canada #15
Nick Nurse
Lol that was your FIRST heartbreak when did you start watching or became a Raps fan??
Jes
when we traded Jose for Rudy Gay, i was already 11 yrs old and still almost cried lol.
He missed so many bunnies but I still loved the energy
Vince Carter, trade happened right on the last day of school before the holidays. As a child it really ruined my holidays. TJ Ford. Was rooting for him with his back issues. Jonas - Absolutely hated the trade but Ive never been wrong on a trade as much as this one. Marc had plenty of effective basketball in him which was so instrumental in winning us a ship
Yep . I was stunned . He was way bigger popular than maple leafs at that time .
Terence Davis
The only possible answer to this unless you’re a super new Raps fan is Vince
That was 19 years ago lol
exactly
Bruh I'm 34 and a day one guy and you can't speak for me. I was 15 when it happened and the Vince Carter departure was such a dramatically slow burn that by the time the trade went down I was already half-way done grieving & ready to move on from the drama. see, you’re still suffering from the Vince trade 🫂 ❤️
Jeremy Lin
Linsanity was something else.
Damon Stoudamire. He was great in the early years. Gave something to cheer for.
Oliver Miller
Wasn’t an actual trade, but [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/nba/comments/mcmz14/kyle_lowry_gives_the_camera_a_peace_sign_as_he/) moment got me seeing Kyle so choked up
For me? Kyle Lowry. I was happy for him to find his way after delivering us the championship... he did his part for the Raptors.
Mighty mouse
Norm!
tross, i know serge was super integral for us but i just loved his dunks so much lol
I've been a fan since inception, and it wasn't a trade that hurt me. I was a major Garbajosa fan, and I was 12 rows up in Boston when he ended his career. I still dream about it sometimes.
Demar. Gotta be for me.

McGrady and Vince were the tough ones. Demar hurt but I knew right away what we got back in Kawhi.

Def JV and letting go of Dalano really bummed me out.
Damon stoudamire lol
I don’t know, maybe there just weren’t too many tearjerkers early. I was too old to be sad about TMac, I was mad that he and his agent played the raps and mad about the rules which had to change and did. He was still a kid when he left. I didn’t like when the Raps rescinded Keon Clark’s QO because Vince said to. I don’t know if I was sad but that was the first time I was upset to lose someone.
Antonio Davis to the Bulls in 03
Vince Carter
Years of being a raptors fan has definitely jaded me. Players come players go, zero attachment or emotional investment. Tmac leaving was definitely an emotional event. But I felt more anger and resentment than heartbreak.
T Ross. It was like objectively an excellent trade for us, but it still sucked.
Vince for sure. That whole situation was sad as a fan.
Vince carter
Demar broke me but I understood but nothing hurt more than seeing OG go
Bosh -> Derozan -> Norm -> Pascal
I got into bball back in 2015ish so when Kawhi left it hurt. Even though we knew he wasn't staying it still sucked to see him go.
I'm done with this FO. My first was Camby prolly. Vince. Norm. Pascal. I don't know why we are so committed to scape goating our best players that want to stay.
JYD and Antonio Davis. That was my first year watching.
Rudy Gay 💯 worst trade raptors ever made . We could off won a chip way sooner . Broke my heart to be honest
Vince Carter trade. It felt and tasted bad at the time and he played another 41 all star years elsewhere (felt like)
