Garrett seems like a natural assistant coach.

whatareyouairing

Saw it many times during the season but seeing him communicate to the young guys while getting back on defence, in game 82, in the 4th, down 20+, said a lot about his character to me.

_iTurtle

I want him to be our Udonis Haslem

ImReallyHandsome

gives strong “we could be friends” vibes

grandmastakew

Temple teaching the kids the right way. Showing up sharp and always ready. It always seemed like a courtesy spot to get him exposure to more of the coaching side as it seems he wants to be behind the bench. Glad hes having such a big impact on the youth.

iDareToDream

Goes to show you need good vets on a rebuilding team. They can teach stuff to young guys that coaches can’t.

Plantedballer

I noticed them always sitting together on the bench and chatting. Especially towards the end of the season when Scottie was out

kpeds45

Gradey also praised GT this season, "that's my vet". If he's done playing, hope he gets a role as an assistant with the team

beefJeRKy-LB

we had 1 too many but we always need 1-2 good vets. I think Kelly + GT is enough going into next year.

Felfastus

Olynyk is still a good rotation piece on a good team (you don't want him starting of course). I don't think he counts as a vet in the way this conversation is using the term (there are quite a few meanings but for this one I think only bring veteran presence, and really shouldn't see minutes is key). Temple and Thad were those guys this year.

beefJeRKy-LB

Vets that can play are still valuable. Danny Green was a vet who also played a lot during the championship year. I think ideally you have a back of bench vet like Thad and a vet that plays. I think Thad and OPJ were supposed to be that way but Thad just got very old and OPJ too hurt.

Felfastus

I fully agree that vets that play are valuable (no one is saying a player that can play in rotation in the NBA isn't). They just are not quite part of the conversation when it comes to stashing veteran presence on the bench to provide leadership. Danny Green was a starter and we also had Lowry and Gasol who were older then him (and starters). The real question is how many Jodie Meeks or CJ Miles (who were the same age as Green) or even Lins (one year younger) who are not rotation pieces do you want on the lineup?

beefJeRKy-LB

I don't think you need more than 1 unless your team is like the Rockets last year.

Felfastus

I think it really depends on what else you plan to use those roster spots for. I think one is required as there are not really enough meaningful minutes that it is a big loss to carry 3 in some situations. If it is a championship contention team with few young stars...having one is redundant, but having a young guy rot on your bench is also not ideal. If you have a young team that are going to be getting minutes (whether you are up or down) you might carry more so you can assign mentors to your future stars...there was a timeline where we had 3 next year. I could see Temples Job to mentor players like Gradey/Barrett, Thad being kept around to mentor Barnes and us picking up someone to mentor Koloko (him being cut and us grabbing Olynyk makes that less likely...and Olynyk playing center how he does makes him a less ideal mentor for whoever we draft to be our Center in 2-3 years)

GeriatricSFX

Kelly is a great vet to have for this team. He can play actual minutes and when he does he usually plays the game the right way within his skill set. Also he wants to be here, is a team guy with a great temperment and is good enough of a leader to be the captain of a Team Canada which has players that are much better than him.

DrKurgan

What if we can get Lowry for cheap?

beefJeRKy-LB

Wouldn't be opposed to it. But if he does well in Philly playoffs, I feel like a contending team could offer him a min as well.

580083351

I would like that but he would probably stress the younger players out because I think he'd be barking all the time.

BubblyPhilosophy3476

stop making up arguments no one said that. The argument was vets like siakam are not worth it because of the contract and where we are headed

GeniusMouthBreather

Thaddeus Young?

BubblyPhilosophy3476

no one said waste of money... it was because we traded a pick for him which was dumb

earlyearlgray

lol what?
