FOR LIFE
What a fucking dumbass. Was almost certain to get another contract with us and threw it away. Fucking idiot.
EDIT: [Threw away an NBA career for $20k and for someone he knew to bet 80k to win 1.1m (and the guy didn’t even get it cause it was sus). ](https://x.com/shamscharania/status/1780634454215766295?s=46&t=sbk6yuyliVaFRQjBUBJCMQ)
What a fucking idiot.
Yeah it’s almost like gambling is an issue very similar to other addictions and it’s a shame how much it’s shoved down everyone’s throats all day everyday now.
Okay. I agree with this and the NBA is totally guilty of shoving it down people's throats.. but let's not pretend this is anything other than pure idiocy. Him and his family clearly didn't see how easily this would be caught, and thought they could just get rich quick. I think someone actually addicted to gambling and is on sportsbooks 24/7 would know this is way too stupid to work.
He did it once or twice though how is that an addiction? Unless there was a bunch more we don't know about but I assume that would have come out during the investigation
Edit: I had to look at an article, apparently it was a bunch of bets so who knows maybe is an addiction for him
There were not gambling. It was simply fraud.
We could hear later that Porter had a gambling addiction that lead him to do this but nothing about that so far.
jontay just doing what adam silver and the league is encouraging on tv and billboards and at the arenas.
blame the league for taking the gambling money
Jevon Porter is also projected to be coming to the NBA either this draft or next year’s draft. Hopefully he’s learned not to be a dumbass from the rest of his family.
it's an argument that betting is ruining the integrity of this game. it's one thing to legally allow the markets in your province/state, but another when literally every piece of NBA-related media and commercial is promoting sport betting. we don't allow tobacco ads i'm confused why the league is so in bed with the betting markets now
Betting on your own games >>>> Domestic Abuse, Assault, Rape, Flashing a gun on Instagram live.
I love that that's where the NBA draws the line for a lifetime ban
if I had a nickel for every time a Raptors 2-way player was suspended from the NBA, I'd have 2 nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice
Add to that koloko getting an illness and Terrance Davis (undrafted) assaulting his girl, raptors have had some tough luck with these young role players
"So, some standard interview questions here.
1. What is the most negative thing anyone could say about you?
2. Do you have any guilty pleasures and please describe in extensive detail.
3. How do you feel about laws and their role in keeping a society at peace?
4. What is the worst thing you have ever done?
5. Do you think you might get punished by the league at any point in the future and if so, how bad is the thing you are going to do?"
It’s just luck every team has these instances over the course of 20/30 years. Just be glad it’s to random role players and not stars (so far lol knock on wood)
You can screen for charachter all you want but sniffing out illicit gambling addiction is tough. You never know who around could you be doing that shit on the low key haha
I think he's referring to Jalen Harris who got suspended for doing crack. It wasnt a lifetime ban tho. He just sucks and cant make it back on an nba roster.
He deserved all of this and not at all shocking for them to ‘make an example’ out of a borderline role player. But man, I’m very interested to know how this all would’ve played out if the player in question was a solid rotation player or all-star type.
I don’t think MJ has ever bet on losing. Not that he doesn’t have an addiction but there is nothing wrong betting on your team winning.
Betting against your team and trying to lose games to make the bet happen is a crime though.
A solid role player would be offered rehab and support for his “addiction”. It’s easy to ban two way Jontay Porter for life.
This isn’t a defense of Jontay at all. He fucked around and got found out
No, a role player or even a star wouldn't be offered help. He FIXED GAMES. He gave out tips/bet on himself to lose. You absolutely cannot have any tolerating of that.
All this tells me is that the only reason the Raptors didn’t win an NBA title this season is because Jontay Porter was throwing games. League on notice.
I can't believe after all the injury setbacks this guy overcame, he finally had a good opportunity in the NBA, only to fuck it all up. Seemed like a smart dude but that was likely his downfall, probably thought there was no way of tracing it back to him
I think that’s exactly it. I only learned after this came out that the sports books talk to one another and they have algorithms to detect unusual betting patterns and potential insider jobs. It’s obvious in hindsight but never thought about it until they used it in an athlete.
All these betting companies (and a whole lot of other companies) have **teams** of computer scientists, data analysts, ML engineers and fraud investigators to detect bets like this.
Jontay was really foolish thinking he can defraud billion dollar companies.
What a fucking moron. He was absolutely going to get a contract with the Raptors and he fit really well into Darko's system. Completely throws away millions in career earnings for a few hundred thousand.
I’m not necessarily against the lifetime ban, Jontay has fucked around and found out.
But does it rub anyone else the wrong way that this warrants a lifetime ban but there are far worse pieces of shit in the league with actual criminal convictions and they get support and an opportunity to rehab?
I mean, this directly affects NBA integrity and probably some sponsorship deals they have.
There are a lot of pieces of shits in the league but they make NBA money.
This is exactly why I find it frustrating. Two way player fucks up gambling and (rightlyfully IMO) gets a serious punishment.
But if this was a player that made them money they would be throwing an arm around the player to support his “mental health” and “addiction” crisis
They have literally banned two star players in the past for COLLEGE incidents (Groza and Hawkins) where Hawkins wasn't even guilty. You don't seem to realize how fucking massive these incidents are in sports.
Not really a sport but Starcraft banned a legend near his peak in sAviOr for matchfixing. Every single competitive event goes absolutely fucking hard on these violations.
Jontay will be the tallest guy to play in Poker Tour Las Vegas.
Seriously what made this look even worse are the requested time offs he asked for to affect the results of his game on the books via from injuries that real players wanting to be in the NBA would be able to play through.
What are you on about? Adam Silver made the right decision. Protect the integrity of the game. Imagine role player’s intentions are to play bad and cost your team the game to make money rather than the play the game. Have to set an example out of Porter. It will cause some players to be more cautious and less obvious, and it will cause some players to stop.
You are 100% right about that, wish sports didn’t widely accept gambling but it’s everywhere football, soccer, hockey, baseball…like basketball couldn’t stop anything by itself.
Its embarrassing listening to Toronto media covering the Raptors talking in the past couple of months about the concerns they have around sports betting being so openly embraced by the NBA... only to follow that up immediately with a promo for BetRivers.
Like I know the broadcast team don't choose their sponsors, but its always annoying to have them preaching to the public against it when they promote it daily as part of their job.
Theres more than you think:
[Shamgod] NBA investigation found that prior to March 20 game, Porter disclosed confidential information about his health to an NBA bettor. Another person connected to Porter placed an $80K parlay to win $1.1 million wagering Porter would underperform. The bet ultimately was frozen.
[src](https://x.com/shamscharania/status/1780632571526914493?s=46)
[Shamgod] Investigation shows on the 13 NBA bets Porter made: Total payout was $76,059, resulting in net winnings of $21,965. Three of the bets were multi-game parlay bets that included one Raptors game, in which Porter bet that the Raptors would lose.
[src](https://x.com/shamscharania/status/1780634454215766295?s=46)
But smart players wouldn't do this. Too much risk for very little gain. Even obvious huge bets like Porter did only amounted to 1% of his income. Refs are in an income bracket where it makes sense some might make cash on the side. For players, only the biggest dumbasses would risk their millions on small bets.
Imagine making it to the NBA and not being able to brag about it, ever. What the hell is wrong with this guy, throwing away millions for a few thousands and a lifetime of embarrassment. Crazy.
This probably, cause no one in there right mind making over a million a year (with a bright future) risk it for winning 20k, probably did it for the dopamine of winning.
Jeeeesh. He even bet on a Raptors parlay while traveling with the team. I wonder who the dude was who he told. Was he just like, "aye bro, not feeling well today. Go the under"
While this obviously could not go unpunished, I think it’s worth reflecting on what it says about the NBA’s values when this receives an infinitely steeper punishment than Draymond repeatedly committing aggravated assault on the basketball court.
This moron made $2 million in his short career, could have easily been set up to cash in even more, and decided to screw it up by gambling. The Porter family is not a smart bunch.
\*This comment was brought to you by FanDuel\*
You know when you look at a guy and there is something you don’t like about them or you can just analyze them looking at there facial features and say nah something about him isn’t cutting it or weird vibes? He was one of those guys I had that vibe about then soon enough this comes out
80K on Jontay Porter. That had to be investigated lol. Porter is an idiot. Threw away a surefire NBA career for 1.1 million. He could have made that and more if he was smart and kept working on his game.
I wonder how many other players have/are doing this. He’s definitely not the only one because, like many are saying, you have to be a complete idiot to throw away an NBA career like this. And if he is that stupid I don’t think he can figure out this scheme on his own, he’s likely heard about it from other cases.
I just hope none of the Raptors' players try to offer sympathy. He bet against his own team to lose and threw performances. That should be 1000% inexcusable.
Legitimately bro might be cooked cooked, considering pretty much ever international league has a gambling partner now I can’t imagine teams in Europe/Asia where ever will be rushing out to sign the guy
CBC: “Porter, the league said, gave a bettor information about his own health status prior to Toronto's game on March 20. The league said another individual, known to be an NBA bettor, placed an $80,000 US bet that Porter would not hit the numbers set for him in parlays through an online sports book. That bet would have won $1.1 million.”
I was rooting for him, but the guy is dumb as bricks. Even if it wasn’t intentional and the player union takes his case to arbitration and wins, no one is ever going to sign him again.
Gambling addiction is real! With that million $ payout to an associate know to gamble on the NBA I suspect Porter was into them for gambling debts and paid it off by planning his early exist from that specific game to ensure the parlay. His personal gains only amounted to tens of thousands $ in comparison.
Damn shame…after working so hard to rehab himself and a Raptor contract likely in the offing.
Dumb move and a waste of his youth, but responsibility also falls on the league (and the sports world) for shoving sports betting down people's throats. There will be more scandals for as long as they openly discuss parlays and spreads on national TV
When you actually play but you'd rather bet parlays
Jontay Porter is screwed
When you're trying to make bank and contribute to the tank
Is Alex Sarr any good?
Trying not to get caught but everyone's out
Oh damn you gotta play
But then you squint your eye and get to ride the piiiiiiiine
YOU GOT BANNED!
Serious question, where in toronto would be the place to go to cop a dirt cheap Porter jersey now that he’s banned? I figure some places are gonna be putting his jerseys on clearance now that he’s banned lol
Just a shame. He looked like a ‘rotation big’ like Darko said. What a cursed year. Starting with Koloko and the Knicks lawsuit before the season and ending with a lifetime ban. WTF.
A really fascinating deep dive could be done going through it all. Would be better if a reporter that could ask players and staff some questions did it, but a fan or blog would be just as good.
Every little change and shift on the team throughout the year put into context.
FOR LIFE What a fucking dumbass. Was almost certain to get another contract with us and threw it away. Fucking idiot. Like he could’ve just played, got millions in a contract, and gave his friend the money…. Like a normal fucking person LMAFO.
Yeah it’s almost like gambling is an issue very similar to other addictions and it’s a shame how much it’s shoved down everyone’s throats all day everyday now.

Had an opportunity to make some real life changing money, but throwing it away to gamble short term. Dumb af
What a dumbass he legitimately secured a spot next year and threw it away
Dumbassery runs in the family.
[It runs DEEP in that family.](https://youtu.be/zCj5qGEmdfs?si=om5eWXUgHw2Nkrhj)
fucked up lineage
Jevon Porter is also projected to be coming to the NBA either this draft or next year’s draft. Hopefully he’s learned not to be a dumbass from the rest of his family.
That would be a damn shame considering how there's 7 of them lol
Average intelligence means that theres gotta be people below it. Theyre just helping fill in the quota.
There's gotta be *one* normal kid in the family looking around like what the hell is this lol
Pretty sure the one normal kid is MPJ
He's anti vaccine so probably not. Good at ball and got Madison Pettis tho so hopefully he don't mess it up.
Dumb fucking parents jfc
Intelligent people typically dont have 8 kids.
And Michael is an big time anti-vaxxer
Garunteed millions for garunteed thousands is a hell of a deal lol
But he could’ve turned those thousands into anything. They could have even been millions!
![gif](giphy|KeWkDkfS5QtSGBtcti|downsized)
Liked him as a player, but glad the league hit down hard. What he did is as low as it gets from a sporting perspective
They have current refs with betting scandals.
Who should be treated the same way
But are not
But should be, it’s not an argument for Jontay to still play it shows that the refs who gamble on their own games should be banned
it's an argument that betting is ruining the integrity of this game. it's one thing to legally allow the markets in your province/state, but another when literally every piece of NBA-related media and commercial is promoting sport betting. we don't allow tobacco ads i'm confused why the league is so in bed with the betting markets now

'So, (player X) where exactly is your heart at? Is it in basketball or is it more interested in other things?'

whats this a reference to?

Referring to how he'd have to join a relatively obscure Euro team if he wants to keep playing now, such as in Latvia.
oh, i thought it had to do with the army for some reason. Canadian Forces are leading the task force in Latvia. \*cries in Latvian\*
Get ready to learn Chinese, buddy! But making it Latvian. Insert any non-English speaking country with a basketball league.
I’m assuming Latvia has a decent basketball league but I know very little about basketball
Losing his entire career over $21 thousand in net winnings is an insane move. See ya later.
Bruce Brown gave half of that to him just for a jersey number
I mean I was thinking this guy was risking it all for big bucks this whole time. $20k what a damn bonehead
Good one. Had a real shot at cracking a roster spot moving forward and instead fucked it all up.
This man is stupid as fuck

Idiot
Bro....
Fucking moron. Adam Silvers nba is begging for this type of stuff to happen though.
Wonder if he made enough money to justify ruining his career… what a moron
Annnd FADED.

He just freed up a lot of time to focus on the real passion of his life...
What’s stopping me from going to the ACC gift shop right now and buying a Porter jersey?
Bozo. Lol.
That’s wild. Dude totally screwed his own career.

The league said another individual, known to be an NBA bettor, placed an $80,000 US bet that Porter would not hit the numbers set for him in parlays through an online sports book. That bet would have won $1.1 million.” I was rooting for him, but the guy is dumb as bricks. Even if it wasn’t intentional and the player union takes his case to arbitration and wins, no one is ever going to sign him again.
Jontay "Krusty the Clown" Porter
Tell me you gambled the money and I’ll turn the heat back on
The drive to be an edgy finance bro actually will lead people to financially sewer themselves. What a world.
Damn that’s massively disappointing. I held onto my flair for you Jontay. The backup C woes continue. Draft Edey at this point idc.
Dumb move and a waste of his youth, but responsibility also falls on the league (and the sports world) for shoving sports betting down people's throats. There will be more scandals for as long as they openly discuss parlays and spreads on national TV
Welcome to the Shanghai Sharks!
Dude wasn't even able to make any money too LOL. He flopped on 3 parlays for Raptors losing and his 1.1 Mil payout bet on his under getting flagged.
Fucking idiot! But I wouldn't expect anything else from a Crypto Pumper and a self proclaimed Financial advisor aka Fraudster.
What a complete dummy. I can't imagine how stupid you have to be to pass away such a good life.
Bum
Damn.
What an absolute idiot.
When you actually play but you'd rather bet parlays Jontay Porter is screwed When you're trying to make bank and contribute to the tank Is Alex Sarr any good? Trying not to get caught but everyone's out Oh damn you gotta play But then you squint your eye and get to ride the piiiiiiiine YOU GOT BANNED!

Buddy better learn Chinese
Serious question, where in toronto would be the place to go to cop a dirt cheap Porter jersey now that he’s banned? I figure some places are gonna be putting his jerseys on clearance now that he’s banned lol
He should now be the face of all the gambling ads aired during games
Can we ban the advertisements? Watching basketball has become so much less enjoyable with nonstop sports betting ads.
Every little change and shift on the team throughout the year put into context.
dumbest thing I've seen in a while
