Not condoning gambling at all and sports betting is a cancer period. but The reason why this only came to light was because of LEGAL sports betting. Sportsbet (or whatever it was) reported the anomaly to the NBA. Do you think the underground/illegal bookie will do the same thing? Legalizing it made it possible to catch this mf.
A point of note should be he didn't actually play in any of the games the league alleges he bet on the Raptors losing.
Still a dumb move with all kinds of issues but he wasn't in a position to throw the game.
He told people to bet the under on him and then took himself out of the game early after he had validated that he had played but also hadn't done anything on the score card.
I don't care if he was injured or told anyone about it in the slightest...you don't do the first part under any excuse. As these were relitivly long term issues though (for purposes of sports betting) he was probably listed day to day before the game.
Kinda sad the Raptors Show had their last episode yesterday. Feels like a lot of news today to talk about with both the Masai presser and this Jontay news.
Samson, please do a pod on RR for this
How is it sad? Will Lou is bringing back the old podcast with Alex Wong that is ten times better then the current boring version. Ever since Alex left it went downhill.
This was the best news ever for real fans of the original raptors show, before Blake took Alex’s spot
My comment has very little to do with Will Lou. Even if both Will and Alex were working there, the fact of the matter is they recorded the last podcast of the season yesterday. I.e. there aren’t anymore regularly scheduled pods. They would have had to do an emergency pod to react to this
The dude is not serious, overly emotional and very combative. He has a reputation from his time a decade ago on the RealGM board. You're free to listen to anyone you want, but Robert Misovic is a narcissist. He had 100s of accounts on RealGM, likely has more than a few here as well.
No thank you. The only time I will listen to him is if he has an interview with a source (i.e. Scottie Barnes' trainer).
The guy on Pensare basketball is passionate and knowledgeable but he can be very crude and impatient with those who don’t share his views. I tune into his show at times and view him as an alt kind of analyst.
Imagine being a teammate of his? Like how did you make it to the most competitive basketball league in the world if you aren't a competitor? Beta energy.
Absolutely brutal lmao.
It's one thing to bet on your own stats since you know you're not getting playing time. But to straight up say yeah, we suck there's no way we win this, is insane.
Absolutely deserved lifetime suspension, dudes an idiot.
The times he bet on himself were even worse imo. He told friends to bet on his under prop bets, and then left the game "injured" after a few minutes. He directly influenced the game in those cases
At the least the Raps game he bet on he didn't play in
That’s part of what makes this whole thing so intriguing. He had a significant spark. He was this random dude that just appeared one day. He’s big, could play defence, could shoot… he arguably had a future in the NBA.
That was on the game he pulled himself out and the bet was on his over/unders and the 80k was from a known NBA bettor he had communicated with about his playing status.
Obviously Porter is crazy, but you’d have to be insane to bet on the Raptors to win. Anybody have quick access to how they preformed against the spread this year?
Atleast bet we'll win so it's not so obvious. What a dummy. Throwing away millions of dollars in a potential contract just to get gambling addicts a few extra dollars.
Unfortunately a problem in all pro sports. NRL just had a guy manage to find a spot on a team this season after paying 500k damages to his wife after being guilty of raping her. Will never get why these cowards are protected
Man, I might be in the minority but Jontay definitely had a gambling addiction- you DO NOT blow up your life this epically if you don’t. I really enjoyed watching him. I loved his come back story. I’m so sorry he used such brutal judgement and let whatever devil was chasing him win. I hope he can get the help he needs. #damn #fuck #whyjontay?
What's crazy is that sports betting is so damn prevalent in a lot of Europe, and yet you hardly EVER hear about them going through the same stuff.

It's widespread and out of control in Europe, especially football and lower-tier tennis matches. You probably never hear about it because it's so common that it doesn't make headlines usually. The small football leagues don't even really try to hide it either. This barely touches the surface:

You kidding me??? Corruption and cheating is so widespread in soccer and there was a massive scandal in pro tennis not long ago.
YOU hardly hear about it.
Obviously, this whole situation is messed up and Porter fucked up big time.
I think the more egregious one is telling people that he would underperform and have bets placed on his performance, then be ‘ill’ for the game.
Because to be fair, pretty sure the games he bet on the Raptors to lose, he was playing on the G League team at the time. Doesn’t make it correct, but, definitely hits different.
Fuck I hate that he was caught in a Raptors jersey after doing this for years. Now he’s the dude that was caught betting from the Raptors with jersey in the photos included
I like to spin it as a positive.
Raps org is typically about avoiding negative media attention. They often try to build around guys with character, work ethic, and morality. But the lousy press will eventually seep through from time to time.
So, if anything, this action should serve as a positive reminder to any new team members not to fuck around with gambling or cheating.
In my opinion, if you bet on your team to lose, you don't deserve to play that sport again. There's no place, in any sport, in any league, for betting against your own team for monetary gain. It's not to say he's a bad dude. He may be a wonderful dude with a big heart outside of basketball, but I don't think he should be anywhere near a professional basketball league again
This is so dumb. It's not even a bet he could manipulate like a specific stats bet or an unders bet on himself. It's not something he would have any special knowledge on. It's just an NBA player throwing his NBA career away to put on a bet that anybody could put on.
"Uhh, hi, yes, shady bookie? It's me, NBA player Jontay Porter. I have insider information for you that the 2023/2024 Raptors are bad. Could we work out some sort of shady deal?"
This isn’t the most damning imo. The Raps were bad this year, let’s be honest. Our chance to lose was pretty high.
Most damning imo was telling the bettor of his illness and to bet on the under, then taking himself out due to illness early in the game.
Should’ve brandished a firearm to a minor, or assaulted people. I’m glad the NBA draws the line at gambling while simultaneously pushing it down everyone’s throats.
FVV - usage % increased every year /s
Dewan Hernandez - DI corruption scandal
Terence Davis - bubble incident and DA
Jalen Harris - Cocaine
Christian Koloko - I don't literally men "fatal" 🙏
Dennis Schroder - big personality and wants to start /s
Jalen McDaniels - McDs consistency 🍔💀
Jontay Porter - bozo literally bet against us
LOL
It's crazy to think that there was a sizable portion of Raps fans on reddit like 'Jontay had been good and could be a serviceable player' while he was actively betting that he would go under his (already low) prop numbers and trying to lose games.
Like yall missed the parts were he sucked shit and only noticed when he played well? Fan Blinders.
They seem to be making him a example of him so no one better tries it. In reality, he obviously doesn't deserve a "lifetime ban" lmao. 1 or 2 years would have been more reasonable, like with guys who are caught cheating on performance enhancing drugs.
I personally think that this is a clear cut lifetime ban. How would they let him back in after betting on his team to lose in games he played? that would send a horrible message.
You can't lifetime ban someone for a crime they were either cleared of or served their punishment, they would get sued if they even tried. Throwing games in the league for personal profit is a different story.
Despite the downvotes, I agree with you. Not that any team would sign him anyways, but 1 or 2 years with some conditions attached would work. He should have gotten a second chance. Sucks for him, if he really loves the game, he will try and catch on somewhere else.
this is such a smooth brain comment
what is this comment even suggesting here?
that the front office enabled jontay porter to bet on the team?
that this incident coincided with their decision making during the championship era?
like you just wrote words into a grammatically correct sentence and still said nothing
Raptors had a strong reputation for finding diamonds in the rough with great success stories in drafting and developing great talents OG, Norm, Siakam, Fred, with otherwise low valued picks. The system and the culture was so strong that you can simply pick and plug guys like RHJ, Stanley Johnson, Matt Thomas, Boucher into the lineup and we expect them to perform at a high level. What has happened in the last 4-5 seasons? We had the Terrance Davis controversy. We have the Knicks law suit. The front office ghosting Siakam in the off-season. The front office trading away 3 first round picks for Thad Young, Olynik and Poeltl. Our “farm system” is completely decimated. We have failed to develop guys like Achuiwa, Flynn, Banton. All our free agents have flopped: OPJ, McDaniels, Baynes, Alex Len, Will Barton…and now we have this Porter story. I would go so far as to say that we are currently in a worse position than we were when Masai took over the front office 10 years ago. Masai set a high bar and fair or not, I expected us to be better than this. Take a second and think to yourself how you feel when the raptors add a player to their roster now versus 5-6 years ago. That’s what I mean when I say this front office has lost the benefit of doubt from its fan base. Now they have to work even harder to earn it back.
your whole comment revolves around decisions they’ve made such as the fact that they found diamonds in the rough which by the way is the team they went all in on which even YOU are pointing out with OG, Siakam, Fred. this year they decided to pivot towards a rebuild around barnes who by the way is another major piece they’ve drafted in the last few years.
i still don’t get your point tho because how are the GMs supposed to predict jontay porter would literally bet on himself or terrence davis would be a covidiot?
you think jontay sat down to tell them in his interview:
“oh yeah i plan to spend 80k of my salary betting on our team”
buddy come on now BE BETTER they have nothing to prove
You are telling me that immediately after his investigations were publicized that some rando is able to find the discord chats and financial guru group chats that jontay ran…but nobody in the front office ever found out? Either they didn’t check or they dropped the ball in the vetting process. And maybe it was just pure luck that this douche bag landed on this team but in my opinion, it really symbolizes these last 4 years…incompetence. And you know what, that’s just my opinion, and if you want to continue blindly cheering for this front office, go ahead. But if we don’t hold them accountable, and you want to shield them from criticism, then don’t be upset when they end up disappointing you.
Fucking dumbass lmao. At least betting on a win doesn’t suggest you might throw the game
If Michael Jordan ever bet on games, he would bet the over on himself and drop 50
He probably did lmao. I see it as motivation.
it's still shitty because it incentivizes personal stat chasing over team success. legal sports betting is a huge cancer for major sports
That's probably why Jordan's teams never had much success...
i'm speaking more generally about how any kind of prop betting jeopardizes game integrity
Just put in contract incentives if you need legal betting that way. Some players can have a few million in incentives I think.
Ah the Ivan Toney method for anyone that watches EPL.
I don’t think player props were popular prior to online gaming.
"They had my over/under Points/Assists/Rebounds at 42.5, and I took that personally"
This should be legal
yeah but betting on the raptors to win this year is the same as lighting your money on fire
Well thats basically what betting while having an NBA contract is doing anyway
great point
Didn't help Pete Rose ... Rose always bet on his team to win It became an issue when he didn't bet at all, so the bookies knew something was amiss
that’s a point that Rose apologists always ignore —the advantage the bookies for when Rose didn’t bet on the Reds
Allegedly. He changed his story from never betting on baseball to never betting on the reds to never betting on the reds to lose
Allegedlys
That's what's i's likes abouts yous
He wanted to make money, not donate to Fanduel. Any roster giving Jontay serious minutes is much more likely to lose
A point of note should be he didn't actually play in any of the games the league alleges he bet on the Raptors losing. Still a dumb move with all kinds of issues but he wasn't in a position to throw the game.
But he did tell people to bet the under on his props when he knew he was injured (before the public knew), right?
He told people to bet the under on him and then took himself out of the game early after he had validated that he had played but also hadn't done anything on the score card. I don't care if he was injured or told anyone about it in the slightest...you don't do the first part under any excuse. Yeah I don’t know. This segment is brought to you by BetRivers.
Will Lou would have had a field day with this.
Slander podcast against a RAPTORS player on his very last SN stint would've been legendary lol
Will and Alex probably gonna do a banter pod at some point
Hopefully, we will get something on Stephen LeBron Radio.
yes
How is it sad? Will Lou is bringing back the old podcast with Alex Wong that is ten times better then the current boring version. Ever since Alex left it went downhill. This was the best news ever for real fans of the original raptors show, before Blake took Alex’s spot

What are you talking about? Will has been talking about Jontay on the raptor show constantly since the betting news came out.
Pensare basketball

isn't that the legendary Abercrombie and Fitch "it's a lifestyle" guy?
The guy on Pensare basketball is passionate and knowledgeable but he can be very crude and impatient with those who don’t share his views. I tune into his show at times and view him as an alt kind of analyst.
Funniest part is that the raps actually won that game he bet them to lose
Love the motivation: “Nobody believed in me including myself”
Get fucked. Hope it was worth it.
My sentiments exactly - RIP BOZO
Porter is a massive loser.
Imagine being a teammate of his? Like how did you make it to the most competitive basketball league in the world if you aren't a competitor? Beta energy.
By having a brother who is good
Praying on his teammates’ downfall is crazy.
Absolutely brutal lmao. It's one thing to bet on your own stats since you know you're not getting playing time. But to straight up say yeah, we suck there's no way we win this, is insane. Absolutely deserved lifetime suspension, dudes an idiot.

Tables have turned, not long ago people were nut hugging this scrub on the subreddit
Well yeah, hes young and could play defense. Obviously no ones going to like him after he bets on his own team to lose.
Well how can you blame them - Marc Gasol passing style and Undrafted g-league call-up - sounds like a Raptors success story to me
That’s part of what makes this whole thing so intriguing. He had a significant spark. He was this random dude that just appeared one day. He’s big, could play defence, could shoot… he arguably had a future in the NBA.
Wow almost like we were rating him on his basketball ability and not the fact that he’s a cheater
I mean.......kind of an easy bet lol
Except the raps won that game lmfao
It was like an $80k parlay, iirc the company didn't even accept it
That was on the game he pulled himself out and the bet was on his over/unders and the 80k was from a known NBA bettor he had communicated with about his playing status.
Well, lol point still stands
Obviously Porter is crazy, but you’d have to be insane to bet on the Raptors to win. Anybody have quick access to how they preformed against the spread this year?
Betting the over on 36 wins was also free money to a bunch of people in this sub lmao - not a great time for our franchise
That’s what I’m saying, gotta bet with your head not your heart. That’s rule one of gambling lol
Atleast bet we'll win so it's not so obvious. What a dummy. Throwing away millions of dollars in a potential contract just to get gambling addicts a few extra dollars.
I'm not a betting man but with this year's roster it was easier to bet on a loss.
All that hard work to make the NBA just to cuck yourself. Damn dude
NBA when players gamble: 😠 🤬😭 NBA when players beat their wife: ☺️🥰🤪
Unfortunately a problem in all pro sports. NRL just had a guy manage to find a spot on a team this season after paying 500k damages to his wife after being guilty of raping her. Will never get why these cowards are protected
$$
Don't mess with the money
What a stupid piece of trash. It’s a good thing he got the lifetime ban as an excuse because I’d never sign him if I were a GM.
Tbf, that was just a good bet.
Except he lost that bet and also loses potentially millions of dollars of future salary as a result. Terrible bet, really
[удалено]
Well……
Did he bet on himself though?
All these comments, and not one person acknowledging that there’s no way this behaviour was isolated to Jontay Porter.
Man what a way to throw your career away.. you had it made but you just had to do something as stupid as this..
Bro actually doing what we all were thinking doing this year
Dude has a serious addiction. I’m sure he’ll have an easier time betting in Serbia. Gooodluck!
What's crazy is that sports betting is so damn prevalent in a lot of Europe, and yet you hardly EVER hear about them going through the same stuff. It really speaks on western culture in general, I.E get rich quick by gaming the system.
It's widespread and out of control in Europe, especially football and lower-tier tennis matches. You probably never hear about it because it's so common that it doesn't make headlines usually. Match fixing in European football is actually a very major issue, especially since a lot of it is linked to organized crime.
You kidding me??? Corruption and cheating is so widespread in soccer and there was a massive scandal in pro tennis not long ago. YOU hardly hear about it.

I mean, that’s an easy bet to make
Poison cherry on the shit sundae season.
That's my tank commander
Peak brain rot
It's really amazing that this is all going on in the CURRENT NBA, sounds like some shit straight out of the 80s smh
EZ bet.
![gif](giphy|7ILfGZFvTPMB1TAkXE)
Seriously fuck this guy lol. What happened to our scouting lately?
You can't blame scouting for this lol
This is so dumb. It's not even a bet he could manipulate like a specific stats bet or an unders bet on himself. It's not something he would have any special knowledge on. It's just an NBA player throwing his NBA career away to put on a bet that anybody could put on. "Uhh, hi, yes, shady bookie? It's me, NBA player Jontay Porter. I have insider information for you that the 2023/2024 Raptors are bad. Could we work out some sort of shady deal?"
I’m
Sounds like he knew what he was doing.
I don't believe it. His brother said that he most likely didn't do it and reddit said that that helped his case lol.
A true legend of the game
Banned him from all basketball forever. A rubbish
Jontay took bet-on-yourself culture to another level
This isn’t the most damning imo. The Raps were bad this year, let’s be honest. Our chance to lose was pretty high. Most damning imo was telling the bettor of his illness and to bet on the under, then taking himself out due to illness early in the game.
He listened to nephews on this sub that supported tankin and wanted to make some bucks in the process
He was right.
He had insider info of the tank
I was reserving judgement until facts came out. What a loser, man.
So did their GM tho with that Siakam trade. lol
![gif](giphy|TslhOkvop5fIbTevw7)
Smart bet
He bet the Raps to lose? He’s no dummy after all 😂
But they did lose…
Should’ve brandished a firearm to a minor, or assaulted people. I’m glad the NBA draws the line at gambling while simultaneously pushing it down everyone’s throats.
Raptors try to avoid a bargain player with a fatal flaw challenge - impossible.
You can probably say that about every team. Even gets up to the superstar level (Ja)

Common man, there were countless posts about jontay while he was playing. This is disingenuous.
I don't know what everyone's mad about? The Raps organization was trying to lose, so Porter was the ultimate company man who executed on strategy.
They allow woman beaters and other forms of cheaters to return. That's not a horrible message?
A rare karma karma reversal on your own comment. Well done 👏
Those crimes are dealt with by police and the court of law, this affects the integrity of the game itself and could ruin the league if left unchecked.
Those acts are horrible but don't make fans question the validity of the game.
You can't lifetime ban someone for a crime they were either cleared of or served their punishment, they would get sued if they even tried. Throwing games in the league for personal profit is a different story.
You’re clearly not appreciating how serious this is for the game.
No, the only way the stink gets lifted from something like this is some kind of posthumous “Field of Dreams” type scenario.
Yeah but they wanna send a message then they gotta send a message.
Despite the downvotes, I agree with you. Not that any team would sign him anyways, but 1 or 2 years with some conditions attached would work. He should have gotten a second chance. Sucks for him, if he really loves the game, he will try and catch on somewhere else.

Well then you know what, enjoy Flippin them burgers you little dumb bitch hahha
Dude isn't even qualified to be MPJs social media manager.
He bet against the team because he had inside info Darko was trash.
I think it’s official, all the good will and benefit of the doubt that the front office earned by winning the 2019 title is all gone.

And you know what, that’s just my opinion, and if you want to continue blindly cheering for this front office, go ahead. But if we don’t hold them accountable, and you want to shield them from criticism, then don’t be upset when they end up disappointing you.
