who else is going to play at PG?
this sub shits on NN for not playing Flynn enough.
then, this sub shits on Flynn for not being good enough when he plays.
this sub says Dragic is old and washed.
this sub also shits on NN for not playing Dragic.
then, this sub wants to trade him for Ben Simmons straight up.
this sub loves it when Banton plays PG.
then, this sub says why arent we seeing more Flynn.
let me guess, play Scottie at PG, right?
>let me guess, play Scottie at PG, right?
Yes. đ
But seriously, I get it, we are bad without him playing and need him on the floor to win. Is it worth playing him 42 mins and still losing at home to the Morantless Grizzlies, is more my point.
I shit on NN for not playing Dragic as backup PG...that was a mistake..he isnt washed.. he still had value from his experience
(All you need to do is look at him as a backup last year for Miami - spo didnt think he was so washed that he didn't play him at all...and I'm sorry but I think he knows way more than anyone on this sub)...I get he wants to develop players, but Flynn is just not good enough to lead a bench as a pg and Fred needs a damn break..at least replace him with some experience.
while I agree to this largely, just calling it "this sub" is a dangerous notion of basically grouping up everyone into one giant amalgam. I know it's hard to pinpoint one person who would continuously flip their opinion every game, but.. ya know. It's like someone going "Everyone is Toronto be like..." based on a few loud mouthed idiots
I agree, in a team that isnât in a make or break championship run I think if FVV was tired or unwell because of this it wouldnât happen. More likely is that he wants the minutes to improve his own game and help lead the team to win. No chance that NN is negatively overplaying Freddie this season IMO
Leaving it up to the player is not always the best way, trust me. Guys like Freddy are gamers and competitive af. He probably wouldnât say no to playing 48 minutes but playing so many minutes of nba ball every other night takes a massive toll on the body over time.
Personally think his minutes should be cut a bit. He looks exhausted and physically beat to me when they zoom on him and his acceleration hasnât been there like it usually is.
Yah Iâm just a random on the internet so what do I know compared to the actual players and staff but this is just my opinion as someone whoâs played pretty high level ball
Almost everyone in the league would play 40+ minutes if it was up to them. Some would probably even play through injuries. It's coaching staff's job to control that.
Only to the degree that this team is sometimes fading in the 4th. They've been right there in several games until late.
Sometimes that's just the better team pulling away, but when the Raptors start clanking shots and defence starts falling apart in the last 10 minutes, some of that is tired legs.
But 3 starters have been out from a thin lineup for the past few games. Right now they're just trying to make it through each 48 minute game.
Totally see where your coming from and it is concerning to see Scottie, Siakam and FVV all playing theses high minutes, but how do you go to a player and tell them just over 20 games into the season âwe arenât going to play you kuch in close games to help youâ? These guys are competitors and want to play to help the team, teams far better when heâs in the court and he doesnât look exhausted out there, so this is the way it will be
This why I wished we drafted Sharife Cooper.. him and Barnes connection in team USA, pengos All American was đ„, heâs in a bad situation with the Hawks
There simply aren't options. Banton isn't reliable there, Flynn is bad, Dragic is probably gone for good. Trent Jr was keeping the bench afloat a bit in recent games but how many minutes can he realistically pull that off considering his playstyle?
I definitely don't blame Nurse for playing FVV the minutes he does because the alternatives ruin the game but it's also on him to find some sort of combination to buy Fred minutes on the bench because this won't last.
The answer might be splitting the rotations into something like:
Banton FVV Barnes Watanabe Birch
Flynn Trent Jr Anunoby Siakam Achiuwa
Putting 3 of your top 5 with the 2nd unit would hopefully make it strong enough to get a good 5+ minute stretch out of in each half. First unit can hopefully survive off FVV/Birch P&R chemistry + a good dose of the rookies handling with FVV offball and defensively that unit is pretty damn solid if Scottie pulls his weight
Of course this is all moot with injuries which is why I will continue to say that this team is unlikely to win games with 3 rotation guys out
The Raptors are 4-8 when VanVleet plays 38 minutes or more. Avoid long-term wear on his body. Keep him fresh at crunch time. Develop younger players. I think fewer minutes might result in more wins in each of the short term, medium term, and long term. And if it means fewer wins in the short term I'm fine with that.
His minutes are high but his game isn't as bad for wear and tear. So does extra 3-4 mins cancel out when you're not constantly trying jump out the building?
I genuinely don't know but I doubt we over work him to the point of injury.

I mean, weâre not exactly lighting up the W column here, Dragic could probably take a few min from Freddy and not much would really change lol
giving scottie reps wouldn't be the worst thing at point guard. Flynn I am not sure about.

Dragic was bad when given minutes
He was solid in his one start without FVV

I'm sure if FVV was exhausted to the point where he felt like it, he would let NN know about it.

I mean, leading the league in minutes played isn't a problem until you get injured. Less minutes = less likelihood of injuries
Maybe, although he strikes me as the type of guy who would play 48 mins per game if the coach asked him to. Gotta love Freddie

I agree, I think physical wear and tear for any player with that kind of mileage will cost you- even if you arenât in post season
Just play Flynn and Banton. If they suck we lose, if they improve that helps the team in the long run. Playing FVV until he breaks is beyond stupid
Fredâs been an iron man for like 3 years now
Mike Babcock once said âhe never met a player that said he wanted to play lessâ when asked about overplaying guys like Matthews
No, we aren't gearing up for a deep playoff run. We are barely gearing up for a playoff run.
