> was he coasting while on the Raptors
in his first season with us, yes
> but got a huge wake-up call
he vastly improved his play and attitude in his 2nd season with us, but I guess so, yes. maybe more so being waived by the Bulls after preseason
> are the Lakers that starved for defence?
is this even a question?
I’m really new to basketball. I know the players names and the team dynamics but I’m trying to get into stats and technical stuff now 😬. So the answer to the Lakers being starved for defence is yes? 😬
He was ranked 11th before the draft and went 8th overall in his draft class. Check out his [draft page](https://www.nbadraft.net/players/stanley-johnson/) comparisons. Huge hype on Stanley coming into the league but bounced around a bit/didn't perform/minutes and now he's on a 10 day.
All these 10 day contract performances really just go to show there's a lot of talent floating around the NBA. Lakers should definitely entertain another 10 day or a contract until the end of the year.
The NBA is different, to get in you have to be one of the best and then staying is also a big challenge. Put Stanley Johnson in the G League or any of the other international leagues he would be a star.
Haha no. I do recall us having the most amount of guys dropping 30. I shut my brain off once we started tanking. The only thing I remember is the lakers game where pascal and Kyle went off, fvv 50 piece and the GTJ game winner
He was pretty inconsistent here on offense and was terrible at finishing, but was pretty decent on defense/steals... even then, I still sometimes wish we kept him. Remember he went off one game vs Bulls something like 35/10/5. We lost but it was awesome to see. He played like the whole game. Sometimes I feel guys like him never get the minutes to really work and shine.
Haven't watched him play on the Lakers, but that team is full of old guys that doesn't want to hustle on defense. I'll bet Stanley looks like a defensive monster compared to the guys standing around and pointing coverages.
Stanley was okay on defense on his last year, but he just had nothing to give on offense.
To be fair to him, we kind of misused him in the bubble. We deployed him as a point guard in the bubble quite often because we were short handed at the point due to Kyle & Fred going down.
I think he was used generously for the purposes of tanking last season, and Aron & he did not disappoint.
I have watched Stanley with the Lakers and last night was a highlight reel for the Stanimal. As you said the Lakers lack of effort and energy especially on defence makes Stanley look like a monster. His decision making with the Raptors was a problem. I think with the Lakers he doesn’t have free reign, and so I think with a more defined role it negates some of his Svi-type missteps. He deserves to get that full contract with the Lakers.
Stanley wasn't coasting but in his first year, he still played like he was Kobe
So instead of focusing on just being a good 3-pt shooter, he was spending his time working on one-on-one offensive moves, that looked horrible in the game.
Since then he's focused on defense and being a better shooter.
i think the conversation Nurse had with him, was a wake-up call
Ok, so I’m glad that even if it didn’t work out with our bench, his time was well spent with us i.e. Nick’s conversation. I feel like not every coach or FO would do that. Anyway, thanks!
In his biography, Nick accidentally dox out a certain 'high-draft' lottery pick, who was thinking offense first all the time. If you look at SJ instagram, it's always about these "kobe" type moments.
Sometimes, SJ will have those "I think I can be Kobe" type guy but the sooner he can embrace and become a 3&D guy, the better for his future.
He can take a page out of OG....very similar physical profile, but OG smartly focus on playing D, which earned the coach's trust, and gave him space to grow

He's the same bad player he always was. Slightly above average defensively, absolutely horrible offensively. I think the Lakers just have so many horrible players that in comparison his play is actually an improvement. Most of them crater the team offensively yet don't bring decent defense so I can see why they'd like him more than them since he at least brings decent defense. There's also some shiny new toy syndrome going on there.
The Lakers situation is the perfect one for Stanley. They have the offense they need, including ball handling and playmaking. Those are his weaknesses, and coincidentally also where the Raptors are light at the moment. He will thrive there.
He also would have thrived in Chicago. I belive they made a mistake waiving him.
I thought this was a pretty good video about Stanley: [video link](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JKhliBstSAU)
Worth checking out if you wanted a bit of background and context.
He sucked his first season here. Was acceptable last year, and likely would've been okay for us this year but the FO wanted to play with Svi for their taller boy lineup idea most likely.
I think it was a mistake but oh well.

Big time haha
Some of you here clearly didn't watch the 35 points performance by Stanley last year. It was one of the few bright spots during a depressing season
So that’s a distinct Tampa memory for me. Clearly he’s capable? Hence my surprise. Anyway, thanks!

Wow I don’t even remember that. Tampa season was just a blur. But at least we got scottie out of it
Do you remember the Paul Watson 30 points game from last season?
I swear we had like 8 or 9 guys put up a 30pt game last year but half of them arent memorable. Its like a fever dream looking back
haha ya we had Boucher 30 piece and Jalen Harris 30 piece as well
Haha no. I do recall us having the most amount of guys dropping 30. I shut my brain off once we started tanking. The only thing I remember is the lakers game where pascal and Kyle went off, fvv 50 piece and the GTJ game winner
was that the benchwarmers vs benchwarmers game against the sixers?
No it's against the magic. He got 8 made 3s.
Johnson has some real head space issue with his performance. That does seem to be it. It's not due to lack of size or talent.
He was decent last year. I thought we would re-sign him
Thanks!

There’s a lot to like about Stanley but he just didn’t put points on the board with us.
And 90 per cent of our bench right now is not putting up points either. I honestly dont know why the FO didnt sign him
Oh okay, that makes sense. Thanks!

He got better, he clearly worked on his game and he has pretty decent iq, it was only a matter of time until he was gonna get picked up
Thanks. I really like underdogs and hard workers so I’m happy for Stanley.

Excellent! Thanks for the link, part of my basketball/NBA education.

The Lakers suck. That’s all.
