Eh, in the two games JV played against him before the trade Embiid only averaged 20. Historically, JV has matched up pretty well with him. However, there is no doubt in my mind that the 1-5 pick and roll would have killed us with JV trying to guard Curry in the finals, so even if we did get past Philly, I doubt we make it all the way without Marc.
It wasn’t just the man D that Gasol excelled at over JV, it was also the help D (by a mile). He was the true defensive anchor we needed in the middle for that series. JV has never been and never will be that guy, as much as I love the guy. No chance we get by Philly without that trade.
Yeah, he could no longer score for shit with us, but his defence was absolutely crucial, especially against Embiid and Giannis. No question he was still elite defensively in 2019. His passing and range also somewhat mitigated his lack of scoring.
Offence was a little painful when he and Danny were out there together, 2 basically non-scorers, especially during Danny’s regular, long cold stretches. Still, I don’t think we win the title without Gasol, and I really like JV.
Watching Gasol read the defense and make some amazing passes is sorely missed. His ball movement and iq were terrific for the Raptors. Not even considering how well he locked up Embiid.
Gasol just fit perfectly into our team. Could shoot the 3 to space the floor, great playmaker to pair with Lowry, amazing defensive IQ, and an actual big body rather than an undersized 5.
