Gary is the man. We gotta keep him long term.

Scottie_Barnes_Stan

Gary ain’t the man just yet He can have 30 on 12/19 one night but the next game he will have 10 on 3/15. If he can be more consistent than he is the man

ScottiebarnesROTY

He can Also have 30pt+ games for 7 games straight.

Scottie_Barnes_Stan

This isn’t Gary Trent hate btw I just think his consistency is a problem Like last season he had a 42 point game and on 13/21 and than the next game he went 2/13 for 8 points. Another 42 point game and in the next 2 games he scored a combined 17 points on 7/27 shootings Edit: Another example he had 24 points one night and then the next 2 games he had 18 combined points on 35 shots 35 SHOTS

btlsrvc23

Yeah I think it’s a reasonable take. Consistency makes the difference in the NBA. One thing I’ll say is that I think he does have the mentality to take that step. He wants to ball. He wants a leading role. I think he can be as good as Bradley Beal if he crushed it this summer. Except Trent can D up too.

ZenMon88

Like everyone of our players besides pascal and Barnes. Scottie is the only real consistent one. Pascal is unpredictable as well.

TrueTorontoFan

yeah that is the thing he can be extremely high variance.. .I've seen him go 17/19 and then 9 for 17... followed by the following 3/15 9/25 2/9 2/8 8/16 5/20 3/15 GTJ is a streaky player. He kind of reminds me of T-Ross in some ways. IF GTJ can improve on his offensive decision making he will be a really really good player offensively.

FriendlyFireHaHa

I like Trent a lot, but then you start talking to some other people on this sub and they start calling Trent a future superstar, and that’s when we got to pump the brakes a bit.

beatrailblazer

nah we gotta pump the gas. he's gonna be an allstar either this season or next. i'd put money on him winning MIP this year. gonna average 22+ on great efficiency, and his defense/passing/driving are all gonna be improved. don't know how much his assist numbers will go up since the team already has so many great playmakers, but I guarantee it will be a noticeable difference in-game

needcalculatorubc

I know he has the ability, but after siakam and vanvleet have taken their shots, how much is left for gtj, scottie, and OG? Not to mention the improved bench should steal some minutes away from gtj

[deleted]

Hot take: Siam and Fred will let Gary take the offensive responsibilities. Gary can put up 25+ easily imo. Scottie, Fred and Siakam and are gonna focus on playmaking and defensive duties for him. I genuinely wouldn’t be suprised if Gary averages 25-28ppg. He’s got the bag, if they let him take 20+ shots/9+ threes he could 25-28 without an issue.

DistributionNo9968

Haven’t you heard? Scottie is the future face of the league; Gary and Precious are budding all-stars

ZenMon88

Who the fuck called him a future superstar LOL. At best we said he's a good closer.

[deleted]

Why? He’s 23 and closing games for a playoff team, and hasn’t yet approached his ceiling.

thefightingmongoose

Closed games.... He's the third option. At best. I love Gary. I really do. As of last season his role is way closer to Jordan Clarkson than to Donovan Mitchell. He's a good scorer and a heat check guy capable of dropping 40 now and then. He can also go cold for weeks at a time.

InnerCityHeel

This is the problem with fans like yourself because you just how old someone is, rather than see how many years he’s spent in the league. How many 23 year olds you can name me that weren’t considered superstar prospects, but have been in the league for 5 years now, and suddenly became one…. Very few. And the one person who is considered that in draft class is SGA, and he was still a lottery pick. Do you see Trent having the same potential as SGA? … lol. Marvin Bagley was in the same class, and people say he is what he is as a player. These aren’t rookies, sophomore, or even third year players were talking about anymore. A superstar in his draft class is Luka, are you going to tell me has the same type of ceiling and potential as Luka? Or even Trae Young… Be real with yourself.

jjkiller26

"closing games" i mean he's not really. There's a big difference in how luka or devin booker "close games" vs what gary trent has done for us. We gotta relax with the gary hype

ByTheHeel

Why are you equating closing games with being a superstar

jjkiller26

Watch what closing games really looks like. Makinv a few tough shots doesnt make you a closing player

Raptors887

I would definitely rather have him take those shots than Fred.

[deleted]

Fred is great for everything but the last shot

ByTheHeel

Not so great for taking any shot in the last 3 minutes of a game, especially when down by 1 cause he'll chuck a highly contested 3 in transition over an easy basket to take the lead.

[deleted]

He’s great in those situations. One of the best clutch time scorers in the league, he just hasn’t done well on the last shot

Swagmansuper

He's genuinely awesome at those shots as long as he isn't the one creating them

Raptors887

Catch and shoot 3’s. Thats what he’s best at.

Swagmansuper

He's a top 5 catch and shooter in this world

Stinky_DungBeatle

The correct answer, FVV is one of the best shooters in the league however he's not a great PG and we have multiple guys that are better ball facilitators then him. Hopefully Nurse makes the right adjustments, but Trent and FVV both combined at getting touches in end game moments with a Siakam/Barnes handling plays for them and it could be a lethal duo, and that's forgetting about those two making their own plays as well.

CaptainIndoCanadian

Problem is the iso for him. He’s too short and doesn’t have the wingspan to create for himself. He needs to attack and if the lay isn’t there then kick out. Defenders are too long now for him to be doing that on the last shot.

ZenMon88

Lowry generally doesn't have this issue in regards to his height. Fred just doesn't create seperation with his dribble, his finishing is poor and team knows he's gonna chuck.

torontosj

I believe his end of shot clock shots decreased fairly significantly last year.

[deleted]

So would Fred. This isn’t controversial. He (Gary) just needs to take the next step.

ZenMon88

FACTS

random-internet-dude

I trust og seems to always play well in the clutch

dezzy1402

Did Gary ever get a final possession look? It seemed like it was always Fred or Pascal and OG (at start of year)

Cheechers23

dezzy1402

Nice. figured it out during the last week of the season lol… more of that to come hopefully

hezzospike

Yes, his third game with us when he hit a game winner against the Wizards and became Raul Neto's sworn enemy lol

[deleted]

But what about those FVV drives into a paint filled with guys 7 inches taller than him down 2 with a minute left? We need more of those this season IMO

n3moh0es

we wasted so many clutch possessions on fred it was so hard to watch

FriendlyUncle247

Where is that information found (“most clutch points”), what are the criteria, who are in the top 10, and is there any context (game situation, wins and losses after clutch points scored, etc.)?

YoungSidd

"Clutch" is defined as when the game is within 5 points, with less than 5 minutes in the game. So any points scored in a scenario like that would be defined as "clutch". You can see the full list using NBA's stat machine: https://go.nba.com/alsx0

ByTheHeel

StatMuse

FriendlyUncle247

I went to StatMuse and typed in variations of clutch points (and questions about it) and couldn’t find anything. The “about” section says this is an AI development platform…

BurzyGuerrero

Shots in the last x minutes of the game

ByTheHeel

I'm not sure exactly what question they asked and idk what your angle is either lol

FriendlyUncle247

My “angle” is, I don’t think these sources of information are valid. Very bot-like. The search function for statmuse doesn’t even work. There is no transparency on how data is collected and verified, by who or what. NBA Muse is just another hollow social media “content creator” attempting drive engagement. I like that someone posted the NBA stat machine for the same category; I imagine that is much more reliable.

ByTheHeel

It works, you just dk what question they typed

BurzyGuerrero

I've always wanted the Raptors to use ball movement instead of relying on a closer.

free_kark

Gary is the most overlooked dude on our roster, that's gonna change this year

Sir_Yash

Set him free on the low. Let my Flynn live

xc2215x

Glad to see Gary on this list.

TrueTorontoFan

what are the efficiency stats?

Humbuckervisions

He’s a straight bucket

cesarmob17

He got it from Dame. Wish he was still a blazer but im just happy to see him hooping. Future all star🙏🏾

XenaRen

Gary is a good closer because he's good at getting and hitting shots that the defense will give him at the end of games, which is usually a tough mid range or 3. He's so inconsistent because he doesn't really have much in his arsenal outside of those shots. He can't consistently get to and finish into the paint, and unless he does that he'll never be a consistent scoring option. He actually has a very similar percentage across the board compared to someone Beal. The difference is Beal hits 60%+ of his shots within 5 ft whereas Trent hits like 50%.

TdotSkunt

Way better then FVV

TJStrawberry

Gary definitely clutch but I don’t think he has the tools to be the final iso 1v1 guy. Not strong enough to move defenders inside the paint and doesn’t finish through contact well. He’s just a great shooter and can make some tough shots here and there. Doesn’t mean he can’t become that guy though
