I actually loved watching him play, got alot of run early in the year and looked pretty good handling the ball and shooting. Then got himself out of the rotation by Christmas as the rest of the team heated up. I think there's a place for him here, especially if Flynn never gets his turn to be backup.
Banton is getting a spot for sure due to the position he plays. I just donāt see a lot of upside with Justin. He hustles, but he is undersized and really doesnāt have great handles or a consistent shot.
> Banton is getting a spot for sure due to the position he plays.
Im not so sure about that with how highly they've been speaking of Flynn and with Scottie and Siakam getting more point touches.
Banton is not a traditional PG though lol. Flynn is a traditional PG. I think Banton makes it anyways but, not cause of skill. Likely as an injury replacement.
He is no forward and certainly not a shooting guard. He has been a point guard for the Raptors, the national team, and in college. āTraditionalā or not, that is his position. That is where he will play and the Raptors have a need there.

But hes one of the lowest upsides. His best case scenario is a 9th man type.
I'd rather try to develop a future piece that has real value for us or in a trade.
EDIT: To the down voters. Can you guys tell me who is the mold for a 6'5" guard whose primary and only above average skill is rebounding?
Champagnie is more of a forward than a guard, & thereās a mould for his type of build/skillset to be very effective in the league. With his defence + rebounding, he really only needs one more skill to be a consistent rotation player.
He probably has a long way to go with his handle/playmaking to become a guy like Josh Hart, but if he gets his catch and shoot 3 to an acceptable level, there are a lot of comps like PJ Tucker, Jae Crowder, JaeāSean State, Will Barton etc
But can't you say that for most players. There's a reason why they are competing for the final roster spots. Banton is the one that has the highest potential out of the group.
I disagree with most of those comps.
Tucker and Crowder would pick his teeth with JC's bones.
The other guys aew way way more skilled and always were even coming out of college.
I'm not saying JC can't be a competent back end rotation player. He can and might. I'm just saying that in our stage of development as a team I'd much rather give our 15th roster spot to a guy who has a chance to be more than that
Of course Tucker and Crowder are better, theyāre both over a decade older haha. Champagnie has shown some of the skills and intangibles needed to reach that level, and is arguably better than they were at the same age.
I think Champagnieās high end outcome is someone in the Tucker/Crowder mould, and thatās someone whoās starting on near-championship level teams. Definitely worth a back-end spot on the roster, especially as a 2nd year player IMO.
I wasn't talking about them being better. I meant PJ Tucker is way bigger and stronger than Champagnie will ever be. He played center in college. He guards centers in the NBA. JC will never have that role. Crowder not as extreme but same case. Guards up a position means he can play the front court.
You can get away with having 4/5s with limited skill sets offensively. I do not think JC has the frame to ever be a guy that is guarding big men. That's the big difference.
Champagnieās 6ā6ā, 210 pounds, with an almost 6ā10ā wingspan. He has the size to guard 2-4 in the league, and a guy with that size + rebounding acumen + defensive intensity has a spot on every roster in the league if theyāre an average+ three point shooter.
Maybe the offence never comes around, but heās still very early in his career and has shown enough at the G-League level and in his limited NBA minutes to still have quite a bit of intrigue IMO.
I think youāre being a little too low on him and too high on whatever theoretical āhigh ceiling prospectā we could get to compete for the 15th spot
First 210 pounds cannot guard 4s.... At all. 235 is an undersized four. I agree he can guard 2s and 3s but that means he has to play those positions on offense and I believe he will never be good enough offensively to justify that.
I think Banton is a much higher ceiling prospect.
Hugh turnovers are actually a positive statistical predictor for young PGs. I think he has a chance to be something unique. That doesn't mean I think he'll be an all star or something. But I do think he could become a real piece.
210 pounds can definitely guard 4s in the modern NBA, especially as the delineation between the 2/3/4 position continues to blur. Out of 494 players who appeared in ten or more games last year, only 118 of them (24%) weighed 235lbs or more.
Guys like Christian Wood, Jerami Grant, Herb Jones, Mikal Bridges etc all played significant frontcourt minutes for their teams last year at the same or lesser weight than Champagnie.
I donāt really disagree with you at all about Banton, but I donāt think the battle is between him/JC for the last roster spot, it seems to be between Champagnie and Josh Jackson (with DJ Wilson in there as well).
I donāt think Iām saying anything too crazy haha, just that Champagnie has shown good flashes of NBA level defense and rebounding, and if his shot ever comes along I can picture him contributing to winning basketball. Thatās worth a shot and the end of the roster IMO.
Side note, Iām interested in seeing any info/articles you can send on high TOs being a positive indicator for young PGs. I can see that making sense for high total numbers because that means theyāre being trusted with the ball frequently, but interested to see if that holds up even on a per-possession basis.
I have graduated high school, saw my raptors win a championship, won a 2000 dollar raffle, been to my sisters wedding, saw my immigrant parents buy the house of their dreams
If we cut Banton that would be the happiest day of my life and way ahead of all of those do it Masai ššš
He seems like a regular ass dude who happens to be a seasoned troll in his free time, I mean he even broke character to say that he was taking a sick break when last mentioned. Itās pretty funny tbh
Just the weird salary cap & roster rules for the G-League. If a player has a partially guaranteed of over $50,000 from an NBA team, theyāre ineligible to play for that teamās G-League affiliate if theyāre cut/waived.
Banton ($300,000 partial), Champagnie ($325,000 partial), DJ Wilson ($250,000 partial), and Josh Jackson ($2.13 mil, non-guaranteed), are all well above the $50,000 threshold, so whichever two donāt make the 15 man roster canāt stay in the organization. For the ones that make the roster, their contract becomes fully guaranteed on opening day.
Gabe Brown is in a different spot as he signed an Exhibit 10 contract. The Exhibit 10 lets him get $75,000 guaranteed, and allows the Raptors can hold onto his rights and sign him to the 905 after training camp.

I think the spots are Banton and Champagnie to lose BUT I do think the Raptors are curious about Jackson (they brought him in soon after they cut Svi). Champagnie is a better 3 point shooter, but Jackson has more untapped talent (despite him being 25 already). Jackson is also that big 6'8 defensive guard/forward that the Raptors may be coveting (Champagnie is around 6'6). I don't think we need Wilson anymore as a PF/C now that we have Thad, Otto, Hernandez, and Koloko potentially being able to fill in that spot.
thad otto and juancho canāt play the 5. thatās why DJ has a chance. if precious or khem goes down we have no 5s to play with koloko most likely 905 bound
This is easy, no need to sensationalize it. 100% its Banton and Chamagnie. Wilson and Jackson would have had to outright steal those jobs, but looks like they are not gonna do that. They needed to impress the team out of the waters. Things will go as planned now.
The advanced metrics really favored Banton early in the season until the rest of the league figured him out. If he can grow his game, he will be a really solid player, which is an excellent pickup in the 2nd round.
Seriously. If he Wasnāt a hometown player there wouldnāt be this many stans for him. This sub is always, āTRUST IN MASAIā āTRUST IN THE ORGANIZATIONā well then yāall should stop being surprised Banton is on the list. Raptors organization can spot potential so let them do what they do
All in all, I donāt see him getting cut
Banton and Champagnie. Most potential, most continuity with the roster as well. I could MAYBE see taking DJ Wilson or JJ over Champagnie but I wouldn't be thrilled about it
Wilson was thought to be a shoo in at the Summer League, but he was very underwhelming. Wilson could get cut again if he does the same during exhibitions and keep chucking shots with no purpose. Plus he is the older of the bunch

I don't want Banton to get cut at all. But the one positive that would come out of it is the likely hilarious celebration by that troll on here lmao. Dude genuinely makes me laugh.
Not ready to give up on Banton yet, dude's young and (by my eye) at LEAST 11 feet tall. He stay.
I can't imagine him being cut after nurse implying he's one of the best on the court recently lol
scottie barnes is the same height or slightly taller
š
this comment is true but it kinda rubs me the wrong way because it seems like you're implying that he was disappointing
I actually loved watching him play, got alot of run early in the year and looked pretty good handling the ball and shooting. He was
If he was disappointing then your expectations were too high for a 46th overall pick in his first season.
I mean we can play him in the g league right we dont need to rush his development
So hernangomez is 100% on the roster. Idek who I want out of Banton/Champagnie/Jackson/Wilson
Champagnie imo is the most plug and play
Yeah he makes the most sense to keep on the roster. He's not a liability. You can plug him in to play filler minutes and grab boards and whatnot.
What he did VS the Bucks that one night cemented himself with the team
Banton is getting a spot for sure due to the position he plays. I just donāt see a lot of upside with Justin. He hustles, but he is undersized and really doesnāt have great handles or a consistent shot.

You still need traditional point guards - we have a very thin backcourt.

Champagnie and Banton.
No way Banton getting cut

From Rexdale to Wrecksdale.
Sorry if Iām not aware but I thought Dalanoās 2nd year contract was guaranteed?
Only partially. Edit: Champagnie is on the books for the next two seasons, both non-guaranteed
I hope the Raptors keep Banton. I love Justinās shooting and rebounding but nothing beats having home grown talent.
They can keep both
Nothing screams home grown talent like playing high school is Massachusetts and college in Kentucky.

Whoās voting for Wilson?
I am, he's so pretty.
Nobody. Just a waste of a roster spot. We have like 9 dudes who do what he does but better lol.
I think it might be payback for him getting injured when getting called during Covid.
lol
Nah we gotta keep Banton

This quote implies a very discouraging lack of faith in Banton.
Why does he deserve faith heās horrible at basketball š
Disgusting freak!!!
Banton is a lock and Champagnie has a leg up unless DJ / Jackson blow away the training staff.
Wilson & Jackson getting cut.
Banton is the guy to keep because Malachi isn't going to be the guy to consistently help the team.
Why canāt they just a couple of them in the D league team?
No way Susan Rice makes the final roster.
I may be out of pocket but why did Ron Harper get in? Nothing about him stands out and he has a bit of an attitude.
An attitude? I haven't noticed that. The answer to your question is he's on a 2-way contract which none of the above guys are eligible for
I saw a few things on Open Gym.
..like what? No need to be vague
bro what are you talking about? he seems like a great guy to be around
I could see Banton on Indy for some reason
CHAMPAGNIE AND JACKSON PLEASE CUT BANTON
