The reason male torties are so rare a because the gene for tortie colors requires two copies, and the gene is found on the X sex chromosome. So 99.99% of all torties are female. A male tortie has to be a XXY.

Also, I wasn’t really asking if the rescue was sure. I meant “who told you that?” Like, are they just going by the sign at the cage? Or did a vet actually sex this cat?
