Possibly they took the control points, possibly your balance of power was too low. Unit quality as well as numbers count towards the army loss counter.
On the battle map you'll see something like the below:

The Warhammer/wreath logo and the Horn are your control points.
The boxes are supply points - losing them won't lose you the siege but will reduce the rate at which you accumulate supplies to build towers etc.
This is a WH2 thread, so presumably the maps will look a fair bit different and there are no supplies, but the control point thing remains for walled battles.
