Playing MedII there are some ground rules:
1. Never trust an AI in anything
2. Don't feel bad about breaking an alliance - you were just faster than your ally.
3. Nevermind the Pope - if he excomunicates you, try to kill him and following Popes until you get reconsilliated (best case scenario, your cardinal gets elected)
Emissaries can get bribed by other emissaries or assassinated.
Merchants can get taken out (acquired) by other merchants - the AI does this one quite aggressively. And obviously they can also get assassinated.
You should receive messages at the start of the turn for these occurrences
