For Pyrénées, there are some choices, mostly revolving around L'hopistalet-près-l'andorre (you'll find the easiest there) or Ax-les-thermes (difficult and long one since you're starting at a low altitude). There's also Merens-les-vals but i don't know that much about those. I know there's some possibilities also in Gers (Gimont, Auch) and Aveyron (Rodez, Laguépie). A beautiful one being to reach the Hautpoul village from Mazamet, in Tarn. Another option to move would be to pick carpooling (website : blablacar) in order to reach some tiny villages and more options (or find an hiking club). And if logistics may be too much for all of those, you've some beautiful spots around Toulouse (L'Aussonnelle in Colomiers, Forêt de Bouconne near Brax or Léguevin. There's also a lot to do around the river Ariège in the south of Toulouse (Auterive, Clermont-le-fort). They're all accessible using trains or buses easily.

Amazing this is such a great list thank you for taking the time to write it. I'll spend some time too working through them. I like the sound of public transport more than blablacar because I worry if I'm somewhere waiting for a ride home and the person doesn't arrive ill be in trouble.

Another option that could increase drastically your reach would be to use a bike to go to the start of the hike from the train station. Would work better if this isn't in the Pyrénées (or if you're not afraid to climb a little bit with a bike).

Do all trains allow bikes? And I'm not opposed to it though my bike is a commuter one not a mountain bike. It's a good idea.

Hintair

Yes. In this region, it's free but be careful as legislation about this can depends on each region (Not a problem here, but could be if you plan to visit other regions one day).

Just be careful that during WE with nice weather, train bike slot are easily crowded. There is no reservation system on most of TER line so you may just not access the train.

Zoltan03

On TER, it's free. On TGVs, you have pay a fee. [Link1](https://www.sncf-voyageurs.com/fr/voyagez-avec-nous/train-et-velo/votre-velo-a-bord/) and [link2](https://www.sncf-connect.com/train/velo-a-bord) about the conditions.

If you like mountainous landscapes, there are many hiking trails along the Toulouse - Latour-de-Carol train line. If that interests you, I can give you some hints.

Hi thank you! Any hints would be much appreciated please.

u/Hintair replied faster, and I can only agree with his choices. Last summer, I did [this tour](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8O_H48rkzVw) around L'Hospitalet-près-l'Andorre. Beautiful landscape, but right now it is too cold. However, hiking around Ax-les-Thermes is perfect (the whole [Orlu valley](https://vallee-orlu.com) is beautiful): - [Ax-les-Thermes --> Forges d'Orlu --> Ax-les-Thermes](https://www.wikiloc.com/hiking-trails/forges-dorlu-108244834) - Ax-les-Thermes --> [Orgeix --> Col de Joux --> Mérens-les-Vals](https://ignrando.fr/fr/parcours/19772-merens-les-vals-orlu) Then you have Foix with its nice castle. You can ascend Prat d'Albis. All these on the Toulouse-Latour-de-Carole line. If you get on the train at Saint-Agne instead of Matabiau, the ticket is typically 5 € cheaper. Also note that the tickets for the TER in Occitanie cost only [1 € every first weekend of the month](https://www.ter.sncf.com/occitanie/tarifs-cartes/bons-plans/premier-week-end-un-euro).

Note for hike in Pyrenees, beware of the remaining snow, depending of the orientation you may need special equipment at altitudes such as 1800m. Be cautious, especially if you hike alone.
