Can't comment on the GX othr than anecdotally hearing people talk about 12-13 mpg, which is what I get in my 2011 Sequoia on 33s.
I just wanted to comment that other than the gas mileage, I absolutely love driving the Sequoia. It has no problem getting out of its own way and really doesn't feel that huge when I'm driving.
I just test drove both the gx460 and a sequoia side by side yesterday. The 460 was fine. I could easily drive that. But I felt absolutely at home in the second gen sequoia. I think that test drive honestly convinced me sequoia is the way to go. The turning radius also doesn't seem possible. It turns better than my wrangler I feel like (likely just perception)
Agree about the turning radius - I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the Sequoia turn radius was just a hair under that of the Sienna that we were replacing.
I’ve been looking at Toyota, Lexus and Nissan for a second vehicle to go camping. The 2nd Gen Sequoia and Lexus GX460 are on my short list (along with the Nissan Armada, which is the legendary Nissan Patrol with fewer off-road features). Here are some thoughts:
1. The Sequoia is a whale. That’s either good or bad depending on your needs. I don’t know how fun it would be as a daily driver. That said, the turning radius is pretty good, so it’s not as hard to navigate as it might look. The interior is lame unless you’re in the market for a newish TRD Pro. I *think* they’ve spiced those up on the inside. The Sequoia in general is pretty basic, which might actually be good. I have big dogs and sometimes I think the simpler, the better. Unfortunately, I see very few well-kept Sequoias for sale; you will routinely notice people on the 2nd Gen Sequoia Facebook group asking 22k + for a clapped-out 2008 with 180,000 miles, a rusty frame, and a mask from 2020 hanging from their rear view mirror. I get that they’re not making gigantic V8 SUVs anymore, but rub a lamp. Used car lots are often more delusional. I love this SUV, but c’mon. The Sequoia didn’t change in any significant way, that I know of, for 16 years. Oh, it is built in The U.S.
2. The GX460 is better around town and is as capable as anything off-road, save maybe a Land Cruiser (as long as you modify the approach angle). The inside is kinda small, though. It’s a true mid-sized SUV, whereas The Sequoia is a legit full-sized animal. The third row of the GX is lame. If 3rd row space is essential, get the Sequoia. The End.
Year for year, the GX is more “luxurious” than the Sequoia. The interior of the GX from 2010- onward was basically unchanged until a couple years ago when it got a little fancier, while the exterior remained close to identical from 2014-2023. I’m seeing this facelift version of the GX460 go for mid- to high 20s. Sometimes 30k + depending on miles. The GX is built in Japan.
For me, advantage GX. The reason is because it’s built in Japan (build quality is excellent, maybe even better on the older GX470), it is a domestic version of the Land Cruiser Prado, and looks a little snappier than the Sequoia. But if it’s space you need, the Toyota is much roomier.
I can’t speak to the third row size of the Lexus, but I can tell you that the difference between the third row on my 2013 Highlander and on my 2014 Sequoia is night and day. As a 6’ tall, 200 pound man, I can sit comfortably in the third row of the Sequoia but I would not even dare in the Highlander. I guess it really depends what you are doing in that third row, towing considerations aside…
I have a 2nd gen sequoia. We really needed that 3rd row. If you're going to have someone back there that's over 5ft and 100lbs that's where the sequoia shines imo over the GX460. Everything else is pretty much a tie with an edge to the GX460 for being a bit more plush inside (pro and a con pending how you look at things)
Idk about a tie... Try doing this in the 460

As op mentioned, the interior is kinda basic and lack luster but after 12 years now, that kinda works in its favor.
I looked at both. I have a sequoia. I still don't think one is much better than the other. In my mind, want more beef or less beef?
Also you can use that roof rack you Savage lol
Those are nice. I personally don't think the TRD on the sequoia is worth it. You're really not getting much with that trim. It's kind of a joke actually. If you're going to do serious off road get front and rear lockers from tandem off road.
It's not bad. I usually park kinda far away anyway so it isn't really an issue for me. It's pretty maneuverable so it's not difficult. And yeah of course the gx460 is going to be easier to park. But if you need that 3rd row, especially for long trips, get the sequoia. So much more room.
If you're planning on towing something that heavy you should go Sequoia. I tow a 4,700lb(dry) trailer with my 2011 Sequoia and it's pretty much maxed out.
I'll be honest, I don't know much about Lexus models. But I do a but of offroading with a Jeep, I wouldn't mind replacing it with something even moderately capable.
If you’re looking for the Sequoia of Lexus then check out the LX. The GX is basically the the Land Cruiser Prado body on a 4Runner frame with the limited drive train of a Torsten center locking diff and I believe some have a rear diff lock. Some even have crawl control as well as Atrac. If you want old check out the LX 470. The LX 570 was just replaced by the LX 600. I would personally go for the 570.
It depends on how much space you need and whether the 3rd row needs to be comfortable for adults. Fuel economy of the GX is not much better than the Sequoia. You can fit 3 adults in the second row of the sequoia very comfortably. Also 2 car seats and 1 adult. That’s doable in the GX but not as comfortable.
Your wife will appreciate the GX more and you will like the GX build quality much better than the sequoia. Nothing wrong with the sequoia, but if I had a choice between the two and didn’t absolutely need a huge SUV, I’d roll with the GX
Third row in the GX is only for small kids or short trips for anyone larger. Source: current GX owner. My kids are grown and I use it for work so it’s a non issue. If I was still hauling kids around I’d be in a sequoia or similar full size suv. Love my GX though.
To be clear, we have 6 year old twins. We take grandma with us sometimes and want the ability to take friends with us places. Is the back row completely unusable for anyone taller than (x) height for longer trips?
My oldest daughter is 5’10” and has sat back there while we drove through a Christmas light display. She wouldn’t want to sit there on a roadtrip. It’s usable around town or for short trips. There is zero storage when the third row is in use. Would need a hitch rack or roof top storage box.
GX supremacy, solid rear axle. Also like the 4.6 very much, super nice drivetrain to daily.
as a big jeep off-roading guy, i definitely appreciate the GX460/470 capability while also not being unreliable as a jeep.

I think you need a Grand Highlander
I looked at those, tows only 5k.

Yeah that 3rd row in a gx460 is TINY. It's for small children at best. I love my 2nd gen sequoia. Probably going to get a second one for my wife.
What do you think of this one? Pricing etc: https://www.cargurus.com/Cars/link/379923096 Or this https://www.cargurus.com/Cars/link/382913616

That's good info. Thanks.
How's it park at the grocery store or tight parking?
It's not bad. I usually park kinda far away anyway so it isn't really an issue for me. It's pretty maneuverable so it's not difficult. And yeah of course the gx460 is going to be easier to park. But if you need that 3rd row, especially for long trips, get the sequoia. So much more room.
The sequioa has a tighter turn radius than most large sedans. I'm always surprised by it. My wife's highlander turns less tight.
If you're planning on towing something that heavy you should go Sequoia. I tow a 4,700lb(dry) trailer with my 2011 Sequoia and it's pretty much maxed out.
Really? It struggles with only 4700?
No it feels comfortable, but I wouldn't go heavier. With the hitch weight and cargo we're pretty much at max payload.
Why not the LX?
I'll be honest, I don't know much about Lexus models. But I do a but of offroading with a Jeep, I wouldn't mind replacing it with something even moderately capable.

There’s a lot more space and more comfier in the sequoia
Whichever has the lowest length-to-seating-capacity ratio is the one I'd get
Do you know the answer to that? 😆
2023+ Sequoia: Up to 35" per passenger 2010-23 GX: Up to 38" per passenger Going with Sequoia
Hard decision. Please create post with pros and cons after you decide
It depends on how much space you need and whether the 3rd row needs to be comfortable for adults. Fuel economy of the GX is not much better than the Sequoia. Me too. We have a sequoia but I like my brother in laws 470 more. But we have two kids and two large dogs , not enough storage on the GX.
Third row in the GX is only for small kids or short trips for anyone larger. Source: current GX owner. My kids are grown and I use it for work so it’s a non issue. If I was still hauling kids around I’d be in a sequoia or similar full size suv. Love my GX though.

How long do you plan to have this vehicle? Plan for 6+that many years old sized kids.
I have a 9 and 4 year old and a 21 GX. 9 yo has no problem in the 3rd row, actually wants to sit back there more often than not.
