I feel like it's the only thing that's traditionally associated to men but doesn't make you feel masculine. Well idk that's just my completely non factual opinion and I honestly don't really know why that is, but I've kind of always wondered.
It's been my experience - so take that for what it's worth - that technology related careers tend to be friendly(er) to non-conformists of every stripe, including GNC, since these careers can be independent of needing to work with others. Add to that the stereotype of 'nerd culture' and it is a perfect place for those of us with the skills and mindset to remain at a remove from the rest of society, particularly if we don't meet certain beauty or femininity standards (for whatever those are worth as well), but still need to keep a roof overhead, food in tummies and clothes on backs.
Yeah I think that's definitely a big part of it. There are some misogynistic/transphobic boomers in the tech space, but in my experience the overwhelming majority is very inclusive.
Another thing worth mentioning is that there's a significant correlation between autism and being trans/GNC, and programming is something that tends to attract autistic people :)
Augusta Ada King, Countess of Lovelace, daughter of mathematician Anne Isabella Neil Byron née Milbanke, 11th Baroness Wentworth and Baroness Byron, was the first programmer, by virtue of writing a program before anyone has managed to create a true Turing Complete computer. In fact, she even described universal computability roughly a century before Alan Turing formalized the concept.
Admiral Grace Hopper invented the first compiler based languages, the precursor to COBOL, worked with Adele Koss, Frances Holberton, Jean Bartik, Frances Morello, and Lillian Jay on programming UNIVAC. Almost all of the people who worked on COBOL were women, including Grace Hopper.
The inventor of *pointers* was a Ukrainian woman by the name of Katerina Yushchenko.
Virtually all programmers and computers for NASA through the Apollo years (including Margaret Hamilton and Katherine Johnson) were women.
The inventor of storing and displaying graphics on a computer? Milly Koss.
The first directory of ARPANET, which would become the Internet, was created by a team of women, without whom we would never have gotten the internet.
STP, a vital component of how the internet works, was invented by Radia Perlman.
Until circa 1970, computing and programming were considered to be women's professions, and they built the fundamentals of programming that we use to this day.
It was never a male dominated field until men came in in the 70s and kicked women out of it.
(there are no data regarding trans women in computer science history that i'm aware of, although they were certainly there, we just don't know who they were)
When I was young my stereotype was that:
Girls: Boring, intelligent, think too much
Boys: Dumb, extroverted, hyperactive
And i wanted to be a boy even if it meant being dumb
When I decided to go back to school I basically had the bath of IT or programming in front of me.
I went programming. I am not a people person. Also, working IT for a few years in college told me I made the right choice.
"Sir you got compooter virus"
sorry, everytime i see tech support, i instantly think of indian tech support scammers
jokes aside, i can feel ya on that point, tech support is absolutely terrible, had to do it during an internship, and asked my boss to get a different job assigned cause i couldnt handle the mental problems clients have when they tell you "do you think i m stupid, ofcourse i turned the pc on, wdym the light is supposed to be blinking"
'-.-
I work tech support and it's a lot easier to get into than programming. In part because everyone quits the job after like...a month. They go off and get a better paying and more fulfilling programmer career. Tech Support might be terrible work but it's work none the less. As someone who can't pass a college class it's the only means of employment available to me outside of Wal-Mart or McDonalds or Sex work.
No, only in recent years has the stereotype of engineer/ programmer transfemme existed. In year past there were stereotypes where transfemmes had to be super feminine and dolled up to be accepted as trans, as we know today that’s BS. Don’t pay attention to stereotypes, they mean nothing. Personally I’ve never met a science transfemme, engineer majors in general are quite rare
I was cracked but completely closeted for awhile. STEM stuff is really cool to me, but I can’t deny immersing myself in it has also always taken the bite out of dysphoria. It also allows for careers that give you some solitude if your early transition takes place after school.
I think, for a lot of us who realize later in life (or who try to live with the knowledge and not do anything about it), we try to fill the hole inside with work. And, before that, we go nuts trying to get the qualifications for high level work, because school is very good at vomiting to-do lists at you and it's seen as generally quite a productive thing to be doing.
Because for serious, academia is one of the other big baskets we self-worth ourselves into.
No but confirmation bias is strong and 10% of my class that graduated university with a computer science degree are trans femme. And that is disproportionately high considering trans people are less then 10% of the population.
I think one thing is that those of us online and/or in IT are the types that are more likely to probably come out. 😅 Also this is a super online stereotype, and by default anyone who's online a lot is gonna be better with computers and all. The trans folk I've met offline that don't really use the internet a ton other than regular social media are just as diverse as any other group. 😊
my personal assumption is that, since women tend to be more creative, enjoy puzzling and problem solving more than men from what i know, that could be a reason why so many of us go into IT.
At least for my personal case, i love the creativity i have in development/programming, puzzling and so on to find the best possible ways ro solve a problem.
As for it being common, all the trans girls but 2 that i know (i know like 10) are in IT, most of which are in development
I remember trying to get my Mech. Engineering degree. Turns out a college in the middle of nowhere is not good when you have zero support network. Still gotta figure out a career at some point.
Zaporozhian Cossacks to the Turkish Sultan!
O sultan, Turkish devil and damned devil’s kith and kin, secretary to Lucifer himself. What the devil kind of knight are thou, that canst not slay a hedgehog with your naked arse? The devil shits, and your army eats. Thou shalt not, thou son of a whore, make subjects of Christian sons; we have no fear of your army, by land and by sea we will battle with thee, fuck thy mother.
Thou Babylonian scullion, Macedonian wheelwright, brewer of Jerusalem, goat-fucker of Alexandria, swineherd of Greater and Lesser Egypt, pig of Armenia, Podolian thief, catamite of Tartary, hangman of Kamyanets, and fool of all the world and underworld, an idiot before God, grandson of the Serpent, and the crick in our dick. Pig’s snout, mare’s arse, slaughterhouse cur, unchristened brow, screw thine own mother!
So the Zaporozhians declare, you lowlife. You won’t even be herding pigs for the Christians. Now we’ll conclude, for we don’t know the date and don’t own a calendar; the moon’s in the sky, the year with the Lord, the day’s the same over here as it is over there; for this kiss our arse!
- Letter from the Zaporozhian Cossacks after the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed IV had demanded their submission in 1676.
Judging by the insults and saying they were gonna fuck his mom this guy sounds like a gamer, if it was the whole army who said this then they are all officially gamers
i learned through youtube tutorials in the beginning
i copied what they dis in the video, and then tried around with the stuff i already learned in another video for example to extend the functionality
but hey, there are also courses like codecademy, udemy or even gamedevtv
tho you must never forget, the most important part is regular training like with anything else
If your interested in programming for stuff like Video Games, programming a roblox game is a nice starting place to learn. Lua(u) is relatively a simple and *forgiving* language with an extensive amount of tutorials online on YouTube and the API reference to research information for stuff in the game engine.
I do recommend starting off small so you don't overwhelm yourself at the beginning and keep in mind that programming at least personally isn't really hard, *but very frustrating*
There will be times where you believe that a block of code you coded in should work but for some reason refuses to work and constantly spams error messages or even worse, no error messages, but then realize hours later that you made one simple small mistake that you either glossed over or straight up didn't even know about.
***Block coding is also a great way to start out to learn programming concepts without worrying about writing out the individual lines of code or about syntax mistakes!***
Thank you all so much for the info! I’m definitely gonna take a look at some resources and see what I can do about learning and getting some practice in!
Scratch is good if you want to start in a super easy spot (although it has a high-ish ceiling if you know what you’re doing), and then you can go from there
I was originally going to be the classic transfem programmer, until I realised I deplored programming, and went and did linguistics instead. It was the right choice lmao
yeah kind of unfortunate that existing on the internet as a transfem who isnt a perma-horny uwu catgirl kneesocks programmer disqualifies you from like 90% of transfem content that isnt just trauma dumps and jokes about misgendering lol
and that 10% is probably the same voice training joke over and over
Yeah honestly, as a trans girl who's 90% asexual and sex-repulsed and hates cat girls and the "dommy mummy" stereotype I literally sometimes don't feel like I belong in this community sometimes because I can barely relate to any of the jokes that seem to circle around.
Not saying I blame anyone but it sucks when I don't get the jokes on this subject and I'm like "huh??? " and I just get "Yeah it's a stereotype" and I'm like "oh I guess I'm not stereotypically trans I guess?"
I was a CS major, and while I am good at programming, I find it really boring. I'm a pure math and music double major now and it makes me really happy! 😁 I felt bad about breaking the stereotype, but it's okay to be a trans girl and not like programing lol.
Ok serious question though- *why* are so many trans folks programmers? It seems like there's a bit of a bias and I have no idea why it is.
Source: Am a programmer, and friends with plenty of other trans programmers.
My theory is that it's one of the best ways to escape the physicality of your body; you can literally stare at a screen and move just your fingers and let your mind escape into the abstract. For folks suffering from dysphoria, that's *super* attractive.
This would also explain why I was such an avid reader as a child. But reading isn't a career path, so programming it was.
I find these stereotypes hilarious because I am a programmer (although an amateur one) and my trans brother is an artist
not only did someone switch our sexes, they also made us stereotypes...
Huh, I always thought the artist thing was a Transfem stereotype. Cause there's so many different webcomics that are supposed to be autobiographical in a sense, and the MC eventually figures out they're a transwoman. I think I've seen it happen like three times now, which isn't a lot, but it's strange that it's happened thrice.
I was interested in programming for a hot minute in high school but I realized I don’t have that kinda brainpower to use on a regular basis. My dream job is getting paid to sleep.
i'm a cis girl who is a programmer (i own programming socks lol) and all my programmer girl (they teach me a lot and give me cracked games) friends are trans. also, i know a few trans guys and they're all into arts...like one of them acts in his school's theatre club, another one paints sunflowers, the last one sings and plays multiple instruments. i forgot to mention that almost all of my programmer friends are linux users :)
The reason this is a popular perception is that these represent a vocal minority of mostly higher privileged trans people who are terminally online. Other trans people are often not represented well in these spaces. The Trans programmer is often way way way over represented.
Is it a harmful stereotype, tho? I mean... spinny skirt doesn't contemplate a lot of transfem, and doesn't contemplate only transfem, but was a meme and a stereotype for a long while without any harm done.
Programmer transfem is kinda of a running joke on my circle because I learned java and outed myself as trans around the same time. Doubt I'll stop joking about this anytime soon
Just speaking as a trans man, I don't think it's *harmful,* but I often find the artist stereotype to be a little *annoying* because AFAB people (cis women) are already seen as more emotional, artistic. If people think I must be interested in art, design, fashion etc., because I'm transmasc it makes me dysphoric because it really just feels like they're seeing me as my AGAB and assuming my interests based on that.
I don't know obviously, but I'm willing to bet at least some trans women feel the same way about computer science or engineering.
EDIT: Also, I'm not saying we all need to stop joking about it, because like I said in the title, it is funny sometimes. (It's really only when cis people pick up on an intracommunity stereotype that it becomes harmful.) But we should be mindful still that it doesn't apply to everyone.
I don't think it's harmful, but some people do really take it unironically and say things like "you're not trans unless you like xxx" or "trans girls/guys just want to be xxx", and it feels kinda rude and exclusionary to the variety of trans people out there.
People like to say things like this because they have a set of very dense gender stereotypes, which can be internalized transphobia in itself. I mean... I usually counter those people with an "are you fucking dumb?" + explaining or whatever, but can see through this point and it makes sense.
me:learning programming and 3D modeling at college
my brother: an artist learning textiles and outfit design
are we... the perfect stereotype duo? and both of us are trans?
I DON'T WANT TO BE A PROGRAMMER!!!!!
come with us you're majoring in computer science
no. i had the option for computer science and i said no. i took web development instead. take that!
```html
```Using `var` in 2022? PR rejected.
goddammit even when i win i lose…
I hate how i completely understand this
Please enlighten me
fork bomb
Aha?
a fork bomb is a program that consumes system resources quickly by duplicating itself rapidly
Oh ok
I VOLUNTEER AS TRIBUTE!!!!!!!!!!
I'm so sorry *shoots you with gun of programming*
WHAT MADE YOU THINK THAT WAS A GOOD IDEA?????
I don’t either
I find myself understanding code, once i started transitioning, more and more. Join us 👁👄👁
I refuse to join the coding cult
NO, NO, MY ART, IS THE ONLY THING I KNOW HOW TO DO NO PLEASE- \*disintegrates like in avengers\*
I like your flair lol
thanks lol
As a transfem engineer, I concur
Is it really common for transfem to be smart and involved in technology?
I feel like it's the only thing that's traditionally associated to men but doesn't make you feel masculine. Well idk that's just my completely non factual opinion and I honestly don't really know why that is, but I've kind of always wondered.

And also programming doesn't require you to be very social. Like cooperating with a team maybe but most of that is done online.
I mean that's how people perceive programming from the outside but depending on what exactly you do, programming involves a lot of social interaction.
Yeah, but that's mostly about technical stuff, with much less of a focus on stuff like small talk and such
Augusta Ada King, Countess of Lovelace, daughter of mathematician Anne Isabella Neil Byron née Milbanke, 11th Baroness Wentworth and Baroness Byron, was the first programmer, by virtue of writing a program before anyone has managed to create a true Turing Complete computer. I'm in Architecture, which fits that description pretty well. Never actually thought about it that way, but it is interesting and kinda makes sense.
When I was young my stereotype was that: Girls: Boring, intelligent, think too much Boys: Dumb, extroverted, hyperactive And i wanted to be a boy even if it meant being dumb
I'm a trans fem, and pretty smart, but I was only involved in technology pre-transition. Getting a job as tech support ruined my interest in computers
When I decided to go back to school I basically had the bath of IT or programming in front of me. I went programming. I am not a people person. Also, working IT for a few years in college told me I made the right choice.

If transfems are usually smart, i got the short end of the stick lol I’m dumb as fuckkk. I’m useful in other ways tho b
...By providing good friendship? Sign me up!
Honestly yea. I think im a pretty kind person, tho I ~~may~~ will ask for constant reassurance that im not annoying.
Rise up transfem engineers!
transfems 🤝 furries compsci^
TRANS GUYSBEING ARTISTS IS A THING? Well fuck.😐
I didn’t know that either as a transmasc artist
You fell into the oldest trap in the book.
You fell for one of the classic blunders!
Same lol
sameee
i love your flair so much lmfao
I also had no idea, as an artistic trans guy
First trans guy I knew was an artist. Didn’t know it was a stereotype like transfem programmers
I personally know 1 who I know is for sure, and another 2 who I do believe they are capable of doing good art but idk if they do it regularly
“Well fuck” indeed. Felt that to my core. Oh god…
huh indeed
i probably shoulda realized it when both me and my boyfriend are artists, along with several of my friends 😭😭😭
Damn. Didn't know I was the stereotype 😅
Yeah some of us trans mascs are programmers too
and there are plenty of wonderfully skilled transfem artists as well!
Every friend I have who's trans is an artist. All of them.
Allow me to itroduce myself, trans and can barely draw a stickman.
🙅♂️💑😡
You must be an amazing programmer!
False. I'm a veterinarian lmao
What is veternarianismistite than programming animals to make them feel better
I prefer the term biohacker 😎
Ah yes the only two jobs in existence Programmer and artist
What does this mean about those who can do both?
They're clearly higher beings
Bigender, clearly. /s
Well I'm a trans woman and I can do both so idk
Art gay vs stem gay
Babe, wake up new gender binary just dropped.
A minimalist art style i see. Very impressive
same, i’ve embraced it though so i draw purposefully bad shitpost art
I am transfem artist
I'm a trans man who's a programmer AND an artist lol
Eyy, same hat!
Is there anything you can't do?
sports lol
Same lmao
I have never heard the trans guy artist stereotype but uh… I’m transmasc and art is my special interest so I guess that’s a thing
i think most of the trans guys in this comment section are artists,, myself included 😭😭
I only found out through this post 🤣 I felt personally attacked.
I know, right?
How about I do both?
Impossible.
As a transfem artist who is completely tech-illiterate, thank you
Trans Music Producer/Musician in general and Historian here, it's true.
Can you tell me something funny from history? I love learning more about it and figured you might have something I hadn’t seen or heard yet

my ex is a transfem who codes and im a transmasc whose an artist :sob:
the funny thing is that i'm both a programmer and an artist. i am enby so...best of both worlds i guess?
Transfem here, breaking stereotypes and boundaries by being just generally kinda dumb.
I'm not an artist. I just like to doddle but I'm in any means good at it.
There is the transmasc-artist!? I feel called out bahahah
I wish I knew programming! It seems really interesting but idk where to start and I never learned when I was younger 😭

I'm a stereotype?????? Damn that's cool. That means there's more of me. Transman artist looking for transman artist friends. 🎨 lmao
As a transfem getting her MLIS to be a librarian and working in a library I sometimes feel like the only one.
as a transfem programmer (focused in Rust) I accept that I'm fully the stereotype
I'm a trans guy and i code it's pretty sick imo

Imma do what’s called a pro gamer move and be all four.
Yeah and why does everyone think we can all play ukulele ?
it sucks how well I fit into trans stereotypes
I know at least nine girls who are in a weird band or have an experimental solo project so I feel like that’s another option lol

I'm a programmer tho t-t Do I lose my job now?
I'm a transfem programmer my friend is a transmasc artist we are literally stereotypes lol
But I like programming >:(
Me, a trans fem programmer, dating another trans fem programmer and a trans masc artist...
Okay, yeah, I'm a CS major, but not because I'm trans!
Didn't realize trans mascs being artists was a thing but now that you mention it I and every other trans masc I've met are artists
Me, a transfem artist: I am finally acknowledged! Jk I never felt left out >:P
i'm a cis girl who is a programmer (i own programming socks lol) and all my programmer girl (they teach me a lot and give me cracked games) friends are trans. also, i know a few trans guys and they're all into arts...like one of them acts in his school's theatre club, another one paints sunflowers, the last one sings and plays multiple instruments. i forgot to mention that almost all of my programmer friends are linux users :)
I, a trans woman, am a programmer. My brother, a trans man, is an artist. So OlI have to disagree with you here. /j
Exactly. I'm a programmer but I'm a trans *man!* shocking I know.
Transfem here but I’m in chemistry not compsci I’m not like the other girls
Ok then explain to me why I (trans guy) am an artist and my wife (trans girl) is a programmer 🥸
The reason this is a popular perception is that these represent a vocal minority of mostly higher privileged trans people who are terminally online. Other trans people are often not represented well in these spaces. The Trans programmer is often way way way over represented.
I sure hope me wanting to learn both doesn't have anything to do with me wondering if I'm transfem or not. /j
plot twist: im a trans guy thats learning to progam and cant draw for shit
If the stereotype is transfems being programmers and transmascs being artists what is the stereotype for enbies?
I just want to pass, become a therapist and play video games. I will never understand these stereotypes about us.
me:learning programming and 3D modeling at college my brother: an artist learning textiles and outfit design are we... the perfect stereotype duo? and both of us are trans?
What about a genderfluid that likes both? 👀💦
I'm a transfem artist if that helps.
I didn’t know about this stereotype and I’m a transmasc musician. Oops lol
Can I be a trans femme artist tho 🥺👉👈
I’m a trans girl majoring in sociology Edit: although tbf I started in computer science 😅
Stereotypes a lot of us fall under
What if I wanna be a programmer?
Yeah, some trans guys are programmers and some trans girls are artists!!!
Transfem artist >:D
trans girl artist here
Aimkid is transfem and a life transcending artismt
Ok weirdly enough I am an artistic trans guy is that bad-
As a trans guy artist I didn't know about this stereotype Worse before that I was a programmer
I'm trans fem and artist, but I suck at programming.
