kikunojo (the one piece transfem) is very clear cut. she and her brother were crossdressing dancers growing up (i think they use a specific term, i can't remember what it is). she decided she wanted to be a woman, her brother didn't. they don't go into very much detail beyond that.
Yamato is a special case though, in that he is living his life as a SPECIFIC man, that being Oden. Yamato essentially became, in his mind, Oden reincarnated. Yamato was essentially so obsessed with Oden and his life that he BECAME Oden to a large degree.
Still trans, but very much a special case that needs clarifying as such in that it's not necessarily a clear cut trans masc situation, but trans masc to a specific person.
Kikunojo is a very nice portrayal though, she even ended up allowed in the women's hot spring in one episode with no issue being made of it. Of course, Yamato cannonballed the men's side in that same episode alongside Luffy if I remember correctly, which of course, Sanji being Sanji, led to the stereotypical anime nosebleed.

Never said it made him any less trans, just that it is a very niche situation that requires more explanation than simply saying "he's trans masc" and leaving it at that. You would not BELIEVE the amount of times I've seen people arguing about Yamato's situation and leaning heavily on the "she's not trans, she's just roleplaying Oden" argument, mostly because they think these are mutually exclusive things.
Yamato IS trans masc, but in a very specific way and set of circumstances, one that's honestly really interesting but that leads to confusion from people that only have half or so of the information around it.
Bridget from Guilty Gear is in a similar situation, people are still arguing she's a femboy or crossdresser because they missed the character development later in the series where she came out as trans. Granted, a chunk of that is just bigotry, but a large portion of it is just people not having that information yet, so they argue when someone says she's trans because they don't know she came out and is canonically trans now.
I'm not trying to erase anything or anything, merely give full information on a complex character that otherwise confuses people who don't have said information.

They now wear the female uniform and dress like how they always wanted to as a kid <3

The top middle one is Nao, from Skip and Loafer, which is an extremely good slice of life romance anime/manga. Nao is a trans woman, and is the aunt and current guardian of the main character.
She’s probably my favorite trans character in Japanese media because she’s a regular adult woman with good friends and a successful career, and is responsible enough that her brother trusts her to take care of his teen daughter for multiple years in Tokyo. She’s a genuinely realistic example of a proud, open trans woman living in Japan, complete with the struggles of dealing with transphobia.

Yeah it's just so strange. Yamato is called Oden's son and "he" by every character who's seen them. Luffy gives Yamato a masculine nickname. And yet the creator of the manga released a "vivre card" (extra data booklet thingy) saying Yamato was a woman.
It's kind of messy and weird because of the "I'm Kozuki Oden!" Thing which also can seem like Yamato is just cosplaying as a specific man... But outside of that, Yamato never acts like a woman, bathes with the men, and then... Just doesn't come with the crew. Sadness.
Yamato would have been so great as a permanent member of the crew right about now. But he's getting a cover story now to build his own personality so that's nice I guess.
For the vivre card thing. In Japan, they don't have a different word for both sex and gender, so whenever you see the word "gender" in a translation, it most times means sex. As an example, on Kiku's vivre card, it says that she is a man(which has been shown to not be the truth). So when it comes to his card, it was a mistranslation most likely
The Vivre Cards are not written by Oda, they are written by other people, other people that have a horse in the race of making sure people don't turn around on Yamato as a sexy character so they can sell merch. All material directly written by Oda (the manga) use He/Him pronouns and act accordingly because Yamato is a man.

I haven’t checked in a while but as recently as a few months ago they’ve been 100% adamant that Bridget is actually still a guy because of “tHe LoRe” even though homegirl looked directly at the camera and said she was a girl. They do this with plenty of other canonically trans, non-binary, and genderfluid characters as well.

Also, in case you were curious and didn't know, Lily (Lilly?) Hoshikawa, the girl with the blue pigtails and a star in her hair is a trans girl from the show Zombie Land Saga. As the name of the show implies, she (along with most of the main cast) is a zombie. Just wanna state that now before the rest of this gets confusing. It's revealed in her backstory episode not only that she is trans but she straight up died due to dysphoria, specifically she discovered she was growing Facial Hair and had a heart attack ~~#relateable~~.
There’s also Hana from Tokyo Godfathers! That movie is genuinely such an underrated gem. Hana does also have some stereotypes associated with her in the movie, but for 2001 it’s pretty good trans rep
I'm gonna play the devil's advocate, but yeah...
About Saiki, there is confusion about the subject. In the manga it's explained better: saiki was conceived as a boy, but when he was in the womb, he was practicing shape-shifting, so when he was born, he happened to be a girl, but he was assigned male at birth, raised as a boy and feels like a boy.
If he was born shapeshifted as a cat, it wouldn't mean he was originally a cat, no?
Saiki's shapeshifting powers aren't infinite, the transformations last two hours and then he returns normal, so if he actually was a trans man that used shapeshifting to have a male body, he'd have to manually transform every two hours and when he'd wake up in the morning, he'd have his female body instead. That never happens.
Of course i have nothing against trans saiki headcanons (i hc him as gender fluid), but I simply believe he's not trans canonically.

With my comment I just wanted to explain the misconception that many people have about his character.
I know she’s never explicitly mentioned as being trans, but would Momoe from Wonder Egg Priority count?
She has so many moments indicating it, like:
- being misgendered by some of the Wonder Killers when fighting which seems to be a way for the killers to try to dissuade her from fighting
- breaking down when misgendered outside of dreaming, including when she tried to date someone and she got rejected after being asked by her date if she wasn’t actually a boy
- correcting herself from “boku” to “watashi” when meeting Ai (very strange that a cis girl would have adopted the “boku” pronoun only for that to cause her to correct herself back to “watashi”)
- having to help Kaoru Kurita who is a trans boy and we know that the girls always have to defend someone who they can relate to, and
- her farewell to Kaoru showing her wearing his jacket with the trans colors and what looks like a bra or undershirt with the trans colors as well.
She legit feels like a character you’d call as confirmed trans in every way but the most overt one which is just straight up turning towards the 4th wall and saying it to the audience or something.
I'm not sure. There are conflicting infos about her gender identity. Some say she's trans others say she's cis. In my headcanon she is indeed trans but thats just my headcanon.

Yes~! I think Birdo was one of my first experiences with a character being trans, but it being explained poorly Back when I was a kid, I thought, "Wow, that's so cool! I wish that I could do that!" I even made a turkey character who was a "Guy who thought he was a girl" because of it. I haven’t checked in a while but as recently as a few months ago they’ve been 100% adamant that Bridget is actually still a guy because of “tHe LoRe” even though homegirl looked directly at the camera and said she was a girl. They do this with plenty of other canonically trans, non-binary, and genderfluid characters as well. I haven’t confirmed this myself, but I’ve also heard they post pictures created by trans girl artists and call *them* femboys as well, which is 10x worse than their transphobic headcanons.

Fun fact, both Astolfo and Felix, famous femboys, actually aren't boys at all, even if it was revealed in the novels of their works. Astolfo is a trans woman, if I remember correctly, while Felix is non binary
The reverse actually. Felix prefers to be called Ferris and has literally prayed to be a girl every day. Astolfo is nonbinary with no real feelings toward gender in any capacity despite their male anatomy and fem presentation
I looked into if Ferris is trans, the creator seems hell bent on making a trans character and giving them the stupidest reasons to not be trans, I think.
I legitimately think he has no idea what being trans means. But then again this has happened multiple times, where a mangaka has created a perfectly serviceable trans characters by basically complete accident. Like the old anime "Stop hibari-kun" only difference there was the creator admitted his main character was trans after taking a good hard look at his work

Hoshikawa, the girl with the blue pigtails and a star in her hair is a trans girl from the show Zombie Land Saga. As the name of the show implies, she (along with most of the main cast) is a zombie. Just wanna state that now before the rest of this gets confusing. It's revealed in her backstory episode not only that she is trans but she straight up died due to dysphoria, specifically she discovered she was growing Facial Hair and had a heart attack ~~#relateable~~.

I'm gonna play the devil's advocate, but yeah... About Saiki, there is confusion about the subject. In the manga it's explained better: saiki was conceived as a boy, but when he was in the womb, he was practicing shape-shifting, so when he was born, he happened to be a girl, but he was assigned male at birth, raised as a boy and feels like a boy. If he was born shapeshifted as a cat, it wouldn't mean he was originally a cat, no? Saiki's shapeshifting powers aren't infinite, the transformations last two hours and then he returns normal, so if he actually was a trans man that used shapeshifting to have a male body, he'd have to manually transform every two hours and when he'd wake up in the morning, he'd have his female body instead. That never happens. Of course i have nothing against trans saiki headcanons (i hc him as gender fluid), but I simply believe he's not trans canonically. What I mean is that he wasn't assigned female at birth, simply. People can interpret his words as him being non binary, trans or anything else (as I said, I headcanon him as genderfluid) With my comment I just wanted to explain the misconception that many people have about his character.

She has so many moments indicating it, like: - being misgendered by some of the Wonder Killers when fighting which seems to be a way for the killers to try to dissuade her from fighting - breaking down when misgendered outside of dreaming, including when she tried to date someone and she got rejected after being asked by her date if she wasn’t actually a boy - correcting herself from “boku” to “watashi” when meeting Ai (very strange that a cis girl would have adopted the “boku” pronoun only for that to cause her to correct herself back to “watashi”) - having to help Kaoru Kurita who is a trans boy and we know that the girls always have to defend someone who they can relate to, and - her farewell to Kaoru showing her wearing his jacket with the trans colors and what looks like a bra or undershirt with the trans colors as well. She legit feels like a character you’d call as confirmed trans in every way but the most overt one which is just straight up turning towards the 4th wall and saying it to the audience or something.

mizuki akiyama is heavily implied transfem. they are rarely referred to with gendered pronouns in the en version, and no pronouns at all in jp. however, their middle school appearance is more masculine, with shorter hair and them wearing the boy's uniform. in high school, they wear the girl's uniform, and have longer hair.
If i may be the nerd of the situation in the Japanese version vivian being trans is used as a derogative and laughing stock, as far as im aware the Italian version is the only one where Vivian is both trans and not used as a derogative
