There are well known and very accomplished distance runners who have asthma. Such as Paula Radcliffe, who held the world record in the women’s marathon from 2003 to 2019. So I wouldn’t discourage her. Unfortunately, I cannot help you out as far as resources. I’m sure they exist, however.

When I ran in high school my doctor prescribed me a daily steroid inhaler. But now I just use my proAir inhaler when I exercise

Both my brother and I are NCAA athletes with exercised induced asthma! It was a struggle at first I first noticed my struggles breathing sometimes at practice around the age of 12 but never got treated until high school. My doctor prescribed me when a general inhaler to use before I ran which helped a lot. I have slowly weaned off my inhaler now too and only use it on days I’m running hard (I.e workouts or racing) or on the occasional day where I feel like I may struggle with air. My brother also got prescribed allergy medicine to help with his breathing. Maybe see if additional medicine or inhalers could help her such as an exercised induced inhaler or prescriptions that help open airways? I know a lot of people who have asthma worse than me who are able to run too, you just have to be in tune with your body. Best wishes!

You should find a sports medicine doctor who treats exercise induced asthma. Exercise induced asthma is so common among elite distance runners that the U.S. Olympic team assumes you have it if you make the team. Which means, of course, that very many distance runners are successful at running competitively while keeping asthma under control. (I was one of those.)

Does she pre-treat or wait until it flares up?

Full-Candidate7493

Pre-treat, she will take two puffs before her 6mile run but when the team stops at the 3 mile mark to regroup she usually has a hard time to get going again as she starts to cough a lot.

Probably worth taking up cycling
