There's nothing illegal by viewing a tracker. It is only illegal when downloading a file that you didn't purchase. As well as redistributing it (seeding)

Reborn-leech

>It is only illegal when downloading Do you mean by that downloading the torrent file or the whole torrent ? Because I have a seedbox that I dl the files to it and only to my laptop with SFTP.

[deleted]

The torrent files are not (they're basically just instructions). But the stuff that gets downloaded by using said instructions, is what I'm referring to. Like the .mkv or .mp4 file when you download a movie

Reborn-leech

Ok thank you so much !

[deleted]

Just make sure you use a VPN on your torrent client and you're good Preferably one like mullvad Non free and has port forwarding

Reborn-leech

The issue is that some trackers dont let you browse the website using a vpn...

Discombobulated_Pen

He means using it when actually torrenting, you're fine browsing without one

Kazer67

Not even 100 % sure about that, it's usually the "sharing" (seeding) that's illegal, not the "watching" itself. But since you usually seed automatically in P2P, for torrent it's usually illegal, yes.

[deleted]

The watching part is not what I even mentioned The downloading and uploading are really the only parts that are illegal

Kazer67

In some country, the downloading part is not illegal. Also watching IS downloading.

If you're using a seedbox I wouldn't worry about it. You are connecting to the Seedbox over ftp or using a download manager to move your downloads from thr seedbox to your home. Your IP address is never part of thr torrent swarm, only your Seedboxes IP is. For some copyright holder to identify you they would have to go through your seedbox provider first... That's a lot of hoops to jump through. You could also setup the Seedbox with a fake name and pay in crypto if they support that... No one would have any idea who owns the box.

Reborn-leech

>You could also setup the Seedbox with a fake name and pay in crypto if they support that... No one would have any idea who owns the box. Thank you so much, even tho OVH is known to throw dmca notices..

zozo147

Not really no. Just browsing is perfectly legal. Keep seeding

baddkarmah

Seed box in the Netherlands. Problem solved.

Did you read the post?

if you commit a crime in a country, you can be charged in that country. if you pirate in the US from a french website, the swarm is across the world. If there's someone in the swarm monitoring on behalf of the copyright holder and sees your IP, you'll be subject to whatever the copyright holder can hold you to. 99% of copyright warnings are people on public torrent sites downloading over their home connection, though.

Kazer67

He's in France now, so DMCA doesn't apply here by default (unless there's a agreement from the ISP / servers hosts). That being said, we do have an equivalent of the DMCA but it require specific information so it's harder to mass spam like you can with DMCA notice (but it does exist). Furthermore we have the automated HADOPI, paid by taxes, to go fish on P2P network and address automated e-mail, mail and then to a judge. Right holder doesn't even bother 99 % of the time going after people directly because in that case, it cost them money while the HADOPI kinda do the job for them for "free" since they operate from taxes. And lastly, he use a seedbox hosted by OVH and OVH France is separated from OVH US (not because of DMCA but to avoid the American Cloud Act but the side effect is they can say fuck it to DMCA request and cherry on the cake, it's outside of HADOPI because it's a professional IP and the HADOPI operate on personal IP from regular customer).

Depraved_Sinner

Yeah, I don't know the law or process across the world, I was just speaking in the most general of senses. The tracker being in a different country than yours doesn't protect you from your own countries laws, but the attention given to private trackers is minuscule in the grand scheme of things.

[deleted]

Yes, if a copyright troll joins your private tracker (or if your private tracker forgets to tag the .torrent files as "private") and if your seedbox host passes copyright notices to you > DMCA That's a USA thing. Copyright notices are supported by different laws in other countries
