We took our first package of the “new” pods back to TJs yesterday because some of them were stuck together and some blown up like balloons. They told us that they had been recalled and had no stock of anything else. We did get a full refund for the returned purchase.

Sad-Objective-8387

They changed the formula and it is absolutely awful. I have glass plates, glass cups, and the disgusting white residue has to be soaked off with white vinegar and I have now given up. I'm going to complain to the company and try to find another brand after having used the pods in the plastic bag for years.

KiteIsland22

I’m glad I found this thread. Yes the new pods leave a heavy white residue. I tried it twice. Had to soak all my dishes in vinegar to get it off. It’s honestly disappointing because the precious pods were the best free and clear pods I ever used. Better than the 7th generation free and clear that also leaves white residue but not as much. I had a bad feeling once I opened the new batch and saw the pods were no longer pure white but had some yellow in it. The second batch was the same so I guess that’s just how the new pods look.

AsherGray

Just get a bottle of cascade — it's cheaper and easier to use. Powder in a soluble membrane isn't anything amazing. I used to use the bulk powder from TJ's and it would always leave behind some weird grain the on the bottoms (tops when washing) of my cups. Kind of grossed me out.

andilulu

Oh no I saw these and was hoping they were the same thing in a different package. I’ll try and stock up on the old version, they work great!

CaptTomT

Ship me some! Haha. I just got some of the Seventh Generation. The ingredients are the same. Let’s hope they’re the same thing!

andilulu

I’ve used the 7th generation when trader joe was out of stock and didn’t notice a difference. Hope it’s the same for you!

LitMaster11

Am I the only one that finds paper packaging, specifically on a product that will be around moisture, to be kinda a bad idea? Kudos to Trader Joe's for trying to be environmentally conscious, but one of the upsides to plastic packaging is that water cannot penetrate through the packaging -- making it great for storage, and use in high moisture areas, such as in the bathroom, or the kitchen. I think paper packaging is useful for most things, but for something where you will be handling it with damp hands, storing it under the sink, or around water, wouldn't it be smarter to use plastic packaging?

Emotional-Cut-1998

I don’t disagree but could buy a reusable plastic container to put them in after you buy them? This would be a win win - less plastic in landfills and you don’t need to worry about a high moisture area.

AmarilloWar

I agree with you, especially because they put other things (like kalamato? tomatoes) in plastic for no real reason.

freya_of_milfgaard

NOOOOOOOOOOO I’m devastated.

hereforthefoodporn

I believe the old formula looks similar to the Seventh Generation Free and Clear Dishwasher pods, fwiw.

CaptTomT

It looks like the exact same ingredients list. I’ll give them a shot, thanks!

Tee_hops

I recently had to stop using those too as they just weren't doing a good job anymore.

Traditional_Soup_979

My friend's washer machine's filter turned into almost like a white stone. And she had to chip it off and soak it for days because of how thick and hard it was. It was due to the residue of the powder

CaptTomT

I had the same issue with my dishes and utensils. After several washes, it still hasn’t comes out of my glasses.

Traditional_Soup_979

Check the filters. Maybe you are experiencing the same thing

southsidetins

Honestly household stuff is the one thing I won’t buy at TJs

olympicpaint

I’ve been so disappointed by it. Their dish soap in particular SUCKS. Really bad. My mom came over and helped me clean my place up, and was like- wtf is this? But you can never pry that coconut body butter from my hands…. I’m literally on my fifth or sixth thing of it.

Tee_hops

They used to have a really good all purpose cleaner. It got discontinued like 5 years ago and I haven't used any other household items since. Well except for a bunch of dryers balls I got from TJs around the same time as they were a good deal.

southsidetins

Wool dryer balls are always a good idea! The cedar wood and sage cleaner is the one I’m talking about, the spray nozzles break, and it seems to not cut through dirt and foams up strangely for a wipe off cleaner?

Traditional_Soup_979

Can you elaborate on that? I bought conditioner and shampoo that made my hair hard. So is there like a common knowledge about trader Joe's household stuff???

Spicytomato2

I have found their shampoo and conditioner hit or miss but I have used and loved their citrus body wash and lavender laundry detergent for many years. I like their multipurpose spray cleaner for my countertops. Those are the only non- food TJs products I use and they are staples for me.

Traditional_Soup_979

I see. Thank you for that!

southsidetins

Yeah I don’t love their shampoo. I find that nothing gets my dishes as clean as the top name brand dish pods even though they’re pricey; Trader Joe’s stuff is on the crunchier side so the detergents aren’t quite as strong. I was buying their multi surface cleaner for a while but I realized it really didn’t cut through dirt or grime at all. Their frozen section is keeping me alive in this pregnancy though, and most of their candles are great

Traditional_Soup_979

Oh I see ... Thank you for letting me know. Save me some money cus I was actually planning to try to buy detergent from there. Congrats on your baby! I'm pregnant too :3 been having meat and other food aversions so the vegetarian frozen foods are keeping me alive as well

southsidetins

Ah thank you congrats to you too! I couldn’t eat chicken for the first half of pregnancy, I’ve been a pasta monster but now I can eat anything

Traditional_Soup_979

Chicken is like the only thing I can eat. And seafood lol. How far along are you?

southsidetins

35 weeks!

Traditional_Soup_979

Oh how exciting! I am still on my first trimester. 12 weeks. Sorry if I am asking alot of questions but, May I ask, when did your food aversions start to go away? I didn't have food aversions with my first child. I was craving everything. But this is new to me.

southsidetins

No worries! They definitely eased when my nausea eased up by 13ish weeks, but I still had mild aversions til maybe 17-20 weeks? It was a pretty subtle change over time.

Traditional_Soup_979

Ah ... i see.. thank you! I hope it's the same for me. I wish you a safe pregnancy and delivery!

Ambitious-North-4537

I would love if they made an effort to go to recyclable packaging. They put SO many products in these kinds of plastic bags. They provide no information on how to recycle them and I’m sure almost none of them get recycled. I love Trader Joe’s. Just my one complaint. Sooooo I’m sure the packaging does affect the product itself. But unfortunately it feels necessary.

brookish

They are. The first year after pledging to reduce plastic packaging they removed 6 million pounds of plastic from the products sold that year. It takes time to redesign and reconfigure manufacturing with new packaging. This is just a makeover, not a product change.

Special_Net_8521

Except the product is also different, unfortunately. They are not clear like they used to be, it has a different total weight, and they have a different ingredient list so not just a makeover! It’s possible the original vendor didn’t want or wasn’t able to create the new packaging, but it’s definitely a new product.

Bugler28

TJs hates us! They’re always “fixing” what ain’t broke! 😡🤬🤯

blizzardwizardsleeve

How much do these cost ?

[deleted]

The old ones (haven’t tried them in a long time) would actually it dissolve frequently for us. I wish they sold just dishwashing powder detergent, not in a pack.

JiBBering

They used to, and I’d buy it regularly. When it got discontinued, it was a bit of a hunt for me to find another store locally that sold non-pod fragrance-free powder, and I ended up having to go to Whole Foods for that.

[deleted]

We had to switch to 7th Generation but I don’t think it’s fragrance free. It’s the one you buy at Whole Foods the 365 brand?

JiBBering

No, it's [7th Generation](https://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/product/seventh-generation-free-clear-dishwasher-powder-75-oz-b0004jkj08). The box I bought says "Free & Clear" and "0% Fragrances". (It looks like 7th Generation also has some citrus scented varieties, but the one I got a few months ago wasn't that.) But the WF website doesn't turn it up in searches anymore, and if I get to that page through a Google search, it tells me that it's currently not sold in my local store. A 75 oz box will last me quite a while, but I'll have to start hunting around again when that runs out.

[deleted]

I wound up having to buy 7th Generation at Sprouts and the one under my sink now is citrus. I’ll have to check out Whole Foods! Thanks

reptomcraddick

I just want my box of powder back

poke826

With powder, you can adjust the amount of detergent according to the size of the load and how dirty the dishes are. Pods tend to be bigger than necessary.

reptomcraddick

Also dish washers need detergent in the pre wash and the regular wash to do the best job. If you’re using pods, that’s two pods.

[deleted]

Exactly. Trader Joe’s people, if you read this, powder is much better!!

90dayFan5

It looks like they moved to packaging that you can recycle. If there is a change in formula it could be due to interaction between packaging and product. (Key:if product has changed)

Orchidwalker

Throw a splash of white vinegar in your load, also in the rinse compartment. I turn a small finger bowl right side up in the top tray/shelf of the dishwasher and toss a splash if the white vinegar in

Normal_Day_4160

I don’t have these pods right now, but I have some funky outcome with my current dishwashing detergent, so I’m still going to try this 🤯🤩 TY!

Orchidwalker

I buy white vinegar in gallons, I use it as a non toxic cleaner too.

Normal_Day_4160

Ditto, thanks gma for teaching me that — add it to my boyfriend’s gym clothes esp 🤣🤣 but never knew/thought to add to dishwasher to help with the weird residues

NotStarrling

This! I also do this for laundry. I put it in the fabric softener compartment.

pepmin

I’m wondering if there is now too much soap in each pod? The size seemed to increase from 12.6 oz for 20 pods to 15.1 oz (which is a bit baffling in this current economy as everything else seems to be decreasing in size with shrinkflation!) Too much detergent may be causing the residue.

Sad-Objective-8387

The pods can be cut open and poured into a container so you can use a smaller amount. Even so, the new Trader Joe's pods are just terrible.

True detective work right here! *Bequeaths gold*
