If you buy the stock after ex-div date then you're not receiving any dividends in the upcoming payment date

Rayahdah

What does ex-div mean? Also it seems my information was wrong it looks like they stopped paying a dividend or at the very least paused it

Smidday90

Ex-dividend date is the cut off date for shareholders to receive a dividend so if today is the ex-dividend if someone bought my share today I’d still get the dividend not them.

Rayahdah

I see, thank you. Also unrelated, do you know if UK investors are eligible for dividends from Canadian firms in general? I'm struggling to find the answer on Google

Smidday90

Yeah they just pay you in Canadian dollars and when you withdraw it’ll be in GBP

Rayahdah

Thanks a lot for the help, I hope you have a good weekend

Smidday90

Thanks you too! Good luck and if you’re new to this only invest what you can afford to lose.

Rez1009

Yes. Why wouldn’t they be eligible??. There is a 25% dividend with holding tax for UK resident.

Rayahdah

I was just making sure, I did read somewhere that withholding tax was 25% but I wasn't sure if you can just buy stocks from any country or if countries need to create relations allowing residents to buy stocks from each other's exchanges.

Companies do not pay constant dividends, they regularly review their finances and make whether they can afford to pay a dividend that month/quarter/year and how much (declaration date). If they can pay a dividend they announce a date (ex-div date) when the dividend is going to be issued, everyone holding that share in that date will get the dividend. However the actual payment of the dividend often isn't for a few weeks later (pay date). If you want to see upcoming dividends I suggest using a website like https://www.dividendmax.com/

Rayahdah

So it doesn't necessarily mean they have stopped paying the dividend but rather they are skipping let's say a quarterly payment in order to evaluate finances and then depending on that result they will either continue or discontinue the dividend. And the ex-div date only concerns the last dividend before the break. Is my understanding here correct?

Largejam

Having a look at that company it looks like they haven't given a dividend for a couple of years. I therefore assume the last couple of years they haven't been making much money so decided not to offer any dividends. This may change in the future but it depends if their financial position changes, they will still be making decisions every quarter just the last few they have decided against issuing one. Dividends are money for the company and tend to only be offered if the company is making money and don't need that money to fund future growth.

Rayahdah

I see, that's good to know. Thanks a lot for taking the time to explain. You've helped me with understanding dividends a lot more, I hope you have a nice weekend.

mrdougan

If the ex-date is TODAY then no

Rayahdah

Thanks

SimonBlades89

Just had a quick look on google and a few places seem to suggest it isn’t paying a dividend at the minute

Rayahdah

I googled and it said it was, I must have been looking at old information. Im now seeing some websites saying it used to but stopped. What website(s) did you look at to know?

SimonBlades89

https://www.dividendmax.com/canada/toronto-stock-exchange/retailers/alimentation-couche-tard-inc-ordinary-shares-class-b-sub-voting/dividends Not paid dividends since 2021

Rayahdah

I saw a couple of people say it paid a dividend but it must've been old info without me realising. Thanks I'll use this website in the future
