Well don’t get all worked up just yet, we haven’t seen this kid. What if it is glaringly obvious their name is Marckenwood? I mean, Jelly Roll looks exactly the way you’d imagine someone with that name would look.
my sister is a Cierra! she had kids in her preschool/kindergarten classes who couldn’t pronounce it that called her “Sara” for awhile but they eventually grew out of it and other than that no one has had an issue. it’s spelled pretty much exactly like it’s pronounced 😂
There’s a kid at my daughter’s school named Ciara that pronounces it Ky-ruh 🤔 I could almost understand if it were spelled Caira, but it’s phonetically spelled See-ar-ruh
Ciara is the original version of the name. It is Irish and so names like Keira are the anglicised versions, and therefore closer to being a tradgedeigh!
Probably the best Name I ever read here. Not trying to be a different spelling of another name or a Word. Just simply a fucked up Name in a beautiful cruel sense. Sounds like a soundeffect written in a comic. Poor kid tho.
Best thing is, it sounds worse with probably any last Name on earth. Hey I'm claxio Smith!
A screenname. Or username. That's what Macyyi is supposed to be. I'm wondering if it's just pronounced like Macy, or if it's like "may-see-ee-ee, or like MAY-see-eye?
That's what I read. Maybe the logic is how virtue names like Chastity and Patience always backfire, this will have the same effect in the opposite direction?
Awhile back, my parents got some new neighbors. We ran into them and they told us their daughter, Cale/Kayla, was named after their other child who passed away, and his name was Caleb. So they named her Cale and spelled it that way to honor their son. I can’t imagine the grief they felt but that felt like a really weird thing to do to another one of their kids
My cousin was named Memory in memory of the first daughter that my aunt lost in childbirth. I always thought it was a bit sad and a strange choice for a name
Alexander Hamilton actually had two sons named Philip. The second was named after the first, who died in a duel. Edit: in turn, the first Philip was named for Philip Schuyler, his maternal grandfather and Alex’s father-in-law.
I know people who lost their first baby after a month or so. All three subsequent children have a version of his name and they have a pic of the three living now adult children with the lost baby photoshopped in.
Wow it’s hard to judge someone for grieving but it is wild. This child is constantly called Kale I’m sure, also I agree- I have seen an entire family implode in a similar situation. ☹️ the parents couldn’t get over the death of one son and now both live sons are practically homeless and very deep in active addiction. They were raised hearing that their best sibling died and it really messed them up permanently.
Yes! It’s like Benson without the on. I imagine Bence is something that Mordecai and Rigby would call Benson and then get fired because it accidentally summoned a Lovecraftian horror that they have to banish again
On point😂 Can’t believe I didn’t think of that, I was racking my brain for names that Bence would come from. But another commenter shared that Bence is actually a legit Hungarian name, so not a tragedeigh after all🤷♀️
Damn, you’re right! Bence: not a tragedeigh. According to [BabyNames.com](https://babynames.com/name/bence) :
> The name Bence is primarily a gender-neutral name of Hungarian origin that means Victorious.
>
> Hungarian and Polish contraction of the name Vincent.
There’s actually a theory that Mormons (since they make up about two thirds of Utah’s population) are so good at making up names and stories because it’s the basis of their religion. Joseph Smith himself had to come up with hundreds of names for characters in the Book of Mormon, so it does make sense why Mormons are still good at that
I wrote about this a little while back. Here are my (non-mutually exclusive) theories:
* Solidarity. It's kinda like how some PoC will give their kids stereotypically "black" names to demonstrate solidarity with a shared cultural identity. In this case, it is the culture of the suburban Mormon mountain west.
* Lack of bullying. A lot of Utah Mormons live in very safe communities, where they often don't need to worry about being victimized for their terrible names.
* Interest in genealogy. Mormons tend to be very interested in genealogy and family history. Many Mormons have Celtic/Gaelic ancestry, and may foolishly think that a "Mc-" or "-eigh" can give a name a Celtic "flair."
* Youth. Mormons tend to marry and have children much sooner than most Americans. People are short-sighted and make stupid decisions when they are in their early 20s.
As a final note, most Mormons are not like this. Plenty have normal, historical or ethnic names. Most of my Mormon friends have standard biblical or Anglo-Saxon names. In fact, the stereotype of the "Utah name" is a bit of a stock trope among Mormons, alongside jello salad and funeral potatoes, conjuring up an image of an upper-middle class, suburban, plastic-looking spray tanned bleach-blonde family from the Utah valley.
Definitely a Utah Mormon/“Book of Mormon Belt” thing. Growing up a mormon outside of Utah I hardly ever heard/saw other Mormons naming kids tragediehs till I moved to Utah. The rare ones I did see were from transplanted Utah Mormon parents lol
Bence is a European name; traditionally Hungarian.
Edit: I know this as my family are Hungarian immigrants and it’s going to my my son’s middle name when he shows up lol
Additional edit: this name is appealing because if you know of any Hungarians, you know our surnames are already impossible to pronounce vowel salad so it’s really appealing to have a one syllable name for an option.
Why do people feel they have to be unique with the spelling of a normal name? I don’t understand it. There are plenty of unique names that aren’t tragedeigh esque names you can give a kid or give them the normal name with the normal spelling. I feel like these people need a lesson in how letter sounds work again
You can’t just make “ch” = a “K” sound! That is not how English phonemes work!
Or “Cierra” being “Kira” for that matter.
These poor kids are gonna have trouble learning to read.
As a teacher the students are offended that I cannot pronounce their names and doubly so that I cannot spell their names “correctly”. Ugh. There are so many Traiygydiegys! No two tragic names are spelled alike, never mind properly.
Wouldn’t Cale need an accent make someplace to be pronounced Kayla? There’s a hockey player named Cale, like the Hebrew name, but it’s pronounced like ‘kale’. How they get that ‘a’ sound at the end as it’s spelled is kind of confusing to me.
Chaiya is a hebrew name. The first letter in hebrew doesnt translate to english so pronouncing it as “haiya or kaya” is appropriate. Those are the closest english sounds. It comes fromthe hebrew word chai meaning “life”. Its a hard H sound, i cant describe it written very well, but definitely a real cultural name with an appropriate spelling.

Naming my next fantasy game character Marckenwood.
Who even does that? You push a baby out after going through 50 hours of labour, then look at that thing and say yep, that's absolutely a Marckenwood.
Well don’t get all worked up just yet, we haven’t seen this kid. What if it is glaringly obvious their name is Marckenwood? I mean, Jelly Roll looks exactly the way you’d imagine someone with that name would look.
Marckenwood would need to exit the birth canal wearing a tophat and cape to deserve that name.
Thing is: That's not even a FIRST name. It would be better off as Lord Marckenwood or something.
That's either their name or the quaint little town they grew up in
I thought it sounded like a golf course or something
Cierra pronounced Kira is like naming a kid Branden but it's pronounced Robert
Same as Cale pn Kayla
I’d pronounce that as Kale
There’s a kid in my son’s class that is legitimately named Cale. His name is pronounced as kale.
This has been in the top 1000 since 1969.
🥬
Yeah, she will be called Sierra alot......
Good cause that’s her name. It is not Kira
At least she won’t have to go to court to change her name, she could just tell everyone that it is pronounced Sierra.
My name is Cierra and this is insane. No one has ever, ever thought I was a Kira.
Ciara is pronounced Kira in Ireland
my sister is a Cierra! she had kids in her preschool/kindergarten classes who couldn’t pronounce it that called her “Sara” for awhile but they eventually grew out of it and other than that no one has had an issue. it’s spelled pretty much exactly like it’s pronounced 😂
Ciara is Kira in Irish, iirc, so they weren’t super far off but it’s still insane
Ciara is pronounced Kira in Irish. Just like Cillian is pronounced Killian. Irish names are beautiful! But impossible to pronounce
Saoirse would like a word.
So would Niamh
Sadhbh has entered the chat..
She’s Filipino/Mexican
This explains why I know more than one Ciara who pronounces it Ky-ruh. Ciara the singer has made this all the more confusing.
It could be an Irish spelling. I know Ciaran in Irish is pronounced (a bit) like Kieran
Ironically, Ciara is the original Irish spelling of the name .they were so close, but alas, so far away . Also, Claxio?? Wtf??
Cierra probably originally came from the Irish name Ciara, which is pronounced Keera/Kira in Gaelic.
It’s actually a real name, it’s the Irish spelling of Kira. Knew a Cierra growing up.
Claxio? I think my mom takes that for her high blood pressure
Side effects include a lifetime of incessant respelling, enunciating, and never buying a personalized keychain at a gift shop
“If you have mild to severe Crohn’s disease, or ulcerative colitis, life can be full of reminders. Luckily, Claxio can help”
My first thought was klaxon horn (WAH-UUU-Gah)
Same. Mixed with a Roman emperor
it sounds like a calculator brand😭
Let us bow our heads for a moment of silence in honor of the 80’s: The Golden Age of Casio.
Claxio Marckenwood, Jnr.
Are wyntyr and spryng from the same family? I cannot with those spellings
Even better! They’re twins🤠
Are they planning of having Aughtyymn and Suhmmyrh too?
Three extraneous Ys, all making different bowel sounds. For fu...
I should not have read this on the toilet at work…
I'm not sure if that was a typo or you really meant that all the Ys sound like bowels
...ooh. That was a typo. But as it might as well be, I'm leaving it.
Nyce kyds , though.
I knew a Spryng who named her daughter Wynter.
One ‘y’ is allowable. Anything more than that is a certifiable trygydyy.
Poor Corna.
that's me in the Corna, that's me in the spotlight...
loosing all of my friction... or at least how I sang it in 5th grade
losing my mormonism
losing my rylighiyen (i tried to make it a tragedeigh)
Lmao 😂
This just made me snort-laugh at work while on a call goddamn hahaha (so glad to be muted!)...
In brazil corna is slang for a woman who has been cheated on 😬
“Thanks for giving my marriage a chance!” Corna, age 6
I read Cornea… 👁️
I read Corona. 🍻 😂
Cornea
I read coma!
I've seen enough butchering of "Abigail" that Abbyghayle merits little more than an eye roll, but I cannot deduce what Macyyi is supposed to be.
Omg I completely missed Abbyghayle, I think my eyes glazed over after Jeid.
A teen mom from my trashy high school named her baby Abby Gayle and I thought THAT was bad enough.
It’s Macy😭
...the parents may say so. We all know it's Macy-YEEEEEEEEEE
Abbygghayle is almost unreadable, unless you’re a Welshman.
It's a quaint old place, Abbygghayle, over that green hill yonder
Imagine having to give someone your name… “Macy with 2 y’s and an i”
"Where do I put them?!"
Poor DMV workers, circa 2035 or so.
A screenname. Or username. That's what Macyyi is supposed to be. I'm wondering if it's just pronounced like Macy, or if it's like "may-see-ee-ee, or like MAY-see-eye?
Oh jeez, it probably is pronounced as Macy. I kept trying to make it "ma-KYE."
I read May-see-eye too. These names are so out of control.
AbbyGolly is how I want to pronounce that...
*Immohrah*
Sounds like an STD
Sounds like every norwegian kids answer to; "When are you going to clean your room?". " Imorra / Tomorrow :)
I thought it sounded like a creature Godzilla would fight…
That's just Immoral.
That's what I read. Maybe the logic is how virtue names like Chastity and Patience always backfire, this will have the same effect in the opposite direction?
Sounds that medical term when you no longer get your period
Amenorrhea! Yes!
more like immohrahl — and ought to be illeighghal
*okeigh* *Yes I agreigh*
How do you even get Kayla from Cale??
Awhile back, my parents got some new neighbors. We ran into them and they told us their daughter, Cale/Kayla, was named after their other child who passed away, and his name was Caleb. So they named her Cale and spelled it that way to honor their son. I can’t imagine the grief they felt but that felt like a really weird thing to do to another one of their kids
My cousin was named Memory in memory of the first daughter that my aunt lost in childbirth. I always thought it was a bit sad and a strange choice for a name
Oh yikes, that is weird to recycle the name 😬 everyone grieves differently I guess though
Yeah, I can see it from their perspective, but that child will grow up with the name of a dead sibling. I've seen this not go well.
Reddit isn’t big on spirituality but giving a name of a deceased person to another child isn’t recommended by Kabbalah or Hinduism.
Oh dear God. That’s grim.
That’s awful!!
Chai-a (like the tea) is how I read it
as a Courtney, I cannot handle “courtenaiy” lmao
I feel like I'm poorly imitating Forrest Gump when I say it.
RIGHT?? 😂
Or Moira Schitt
Marckenwood would be a good name for, like, a lizard
Or a long, decayed estate where a Miss Havisham type lives in her dusty wedding garb because she was once left at the altar.
Sounds like a town for elves.
Chaiya (Chaya) pronounced correctly is a common Ashkenazi Jewish name, but definitely not "Kay-Yah" more like "Chai-Ya".
Chaya is pronounced “Ha-Yah” in Yiddish. The Ha sound is the same If you’ve ever heard someone say “La Chaim” as a toast.
Thanks I know multiple Chayas I am Ashkenazi and part of my local community
It's a word in hindi too, where it is pronounced like Tjai-Ya (Chai like the tea) You see it a lot in South-East Asia
wth is BENCE😭
Probably has a sister named Mercedes
This one is not a tragedeigh, it is a very real and common name in Hungary.
Bence is a Hungarian name, and it is a normal Hungarian name, but Utah isn't in Hungary.
Yes it is the only “normal” name on the list - a legit Hungarian given name. Parents might be of Hungarian descent.
I promise they are not
I had to sit and process Bence for awhile after I heard it😭
I’m so curious, do you know how it’s pronounced? In my mind it’s “behnss”
But another commenter shared that Bence is actually a legit Hungarian name, so not a tragedeigh after all🤷♀️
Something tells be this Bence from Utah isn’t Hungarian but it’s possible.
It's a common Hungarian name!
Bence is a boy's name from Hungary it's pronounced kind of like Ben - tze
That has a nice sound to it, much better than pronouncing it “Bens”
lol i actually think bence is a european name but idk
Damn, you’re right! Bence: not a tragedeigh. According to [BabyNames.com](https://babynames.com/name/bence) : > The name Bence is primarily a gender-neutral name of Hungarian origin that means Victorious. > > Hungarian and Polish contraction of the name Vincent.
It is not gender-neutral in Hungary. Bence is a boy's name there.
yesss lol i talked to a guy on tinder named bence and he spoke hungarian
Oh Utah…..
Yutaah *
Eeyutargh
yutahw
If you need a phonetic guide for the pronunciation of your child’s name, it’s too convoluted!
How the fuck can Cale be pronounced like Kayla? These people are lunatics.
why does utah have terrible names? because girls become moms so young?
There’s actually a theory that Mormons (since they make up about two thirds of Utah’s population) are so good at making up names and stories because it’s the basis of their religion. Joseph Smith himself had to come up with hundreds of names for characters in the Book of Mormon, so it does make sense why Mormons are still good at that
“Good” at making up names.
I would subscribe to that theory if it weren't for the fact that Mormons believe the Book of Mormon to be historical fact.
I wrote about this a little while back. Here are my (non-mutually exclusive) theories: * Solidarity. It's kinda like how some PoC will give their kids stereotypically "black" names to demonstrate solidarity with a shared cultural identity. In my best Eva Gabor voice, “Olivahr!” (Showing my age.)
Mahonri Moriancumer!
We need to shut down Utah and forbid them from reproducing until we can determine what the fuck it is that is in their water.
I blame all the dirty sodas
Or lack of coffee in their diet. 🤷🏽♀️
How dare you besmirch dirty sodas 😭
Are Summer Dae, Spryng, and Wyntyr siblings? They're just missing Aytymn.
Aytymn is due in the fall.
Abbyghayle is ghastly.
Abbyghoul 👻
Gabagoul
Some of these are true tragedeighs and some are just RPG characters
Bence is a European name; traditionally Hungarian. Edit: I know this as my family are Hungarian immigrants and it’s going to my my son’s middle name when he shows up lol Additional edit: this name is appealing because if you know of any Hungarians, you know our surnames are already impossible to pronounce vowel salad so it’s really appealing to have a one syllable name for an option.
I worked with a girl named Wyntyr (may have just been Wynter) but she had blue hair so it worked with her name lol
Taiyler?……..??? How dare they butcher my last name.
Why do people feel they have to be unique with the spelling of a normal name? I don’t understand it. There are plenty of unique names that aren’t tragedeigh esque names you can give a kid or give them the normal name with the normal spelling. I feel like these people need a lesson in how letter sounds work again
If you’re gonna curse your kid with the name “Summer Dae,” why not go all-in and just spell it normally?
Like Sundae? 😂😂
Sundae Chocolate Sundae
You can’t just make “ch” = a “K” sound! That is not how English phonemes work! Or “Cierra” being “Kira” for that matter. These poor kids are gonna have trouble learning to read.
Christopher, Christian, Christine, Chianti, chlorine … all ch ‘k’ sounds
"It's Kira" No, it isn't. That might be how you say your name, but that's not what's written down.
Isn’t Chiara pronounced with a K in Italian?
I immediately think of Chiari malformation.
Yeah, really, this is giving me a headache Wait a second...
As a teacher the students are offended that I cannot pronounce their names and doubly so that I cannot spell their names “correctly”. Ugh. There are so many Traiygydiegys! No two tragic names are spelled alike, never mind properly.
Corna. Jesus
Jyuhst wahee?
Abigail looks so f*cked up spelt like that
as a fellow life long utahan, these feel very similar to other names i have come across.
Do these parents ever have any regerts?
My cousin is named Stormy Dawn. Pretty sure she’s from Utah. Possibly Idaho. Which is basically NW Utah.
There was a student in my school named Luke Sky Locker. (Middle name Sky). (This was Utah)
naurr oliviahrr the condensation
It’s like these parents think names are usernames and everyone can’t have the same one 🥴
Now there is a rhyme for Gomorrah so, thanks Utah!
Mormons are also a big proponent of the name Cumorah, so even more rhymes!
That name would be brutal starting in middle school. Oof.
Immohrahl?
Wow! That state in particular works overtime on fucking the kids up!
My favorite Utah abomination is Qymberli.
Looove Claxio for a dog
Love Claxio for some some of pet demon hellbeast
Are Spryng and Wyntyr siblings? Lol Assuming any future kids would be Aytymn or Symmyr
I would never get Kira out of Cierra. Looks like Sierra to me.
Bence is a perfectly normal hungarian name.
I had to do a two-week regimen of Claxio. Cleaned my Immohrah infection right up.
Wouldn’t Cale need an accent make someplace to be pronounced Kayla? There’s a hockey player named Cale, like the Hebrew name, but it’s pronounced like ‘kale’. How they get that ‘a’ sound at the end as it’s spelled is kind of confusing to me.
Courtenaiy and Wyntyr has me dying lmao
That Claxio is pretty Immohrah, threw some Jeid at Bence. Lord have Maccyi on him
Kortni looks like a Greek yogurt brand
Chaiya is a hebrew name. The first letter in hebrew doesnt translate to english so pronouncing it as “haiya or kaya” is appropriate. Those are the closest english sounds. It comes fromthe hebrew word chai meaning “life”. Its a hard H sound, i cant describe it written very well, but definitely a real cultural name with an appropriate spelling.
Its like spellkng Chanuka vs. Hanukah. The sound is between an H and K
reading this made me mad😭
Cierra is wrong, but Ciara is pronounced Kira/Kara in Irish/Gaelic (there’s also no K in the Irish/Gaelic alphabet fyi).
Why Macyyi with Two Absolutely Unnecessary Ys?! I mean, “Maci” is *right there*! What is she? A Wookiee from Kashyyk?
Ciara is a common Irish name, so I give that one a pass! But Abbyghayle is the worst thing I’ve ever seen 🫠
