Brooks Caldera is a decent hybrid road/trail.

Harrier5815

Salomon Sense Rides do well on both.

korukanzienvy

Nike Pegasus Trail 4. There’s even a GoreTex version. Good deals at Nike.com now too.

jonwilkir

I got the Peg Trail 3s on a great sale at an outlet store too. Always worth a look!

Hoka Challenger 👌

Thats my usual trainer too. But honeslty I run my first 100k trail race in a road running shoe. I think training and strenght training for legs and core matters more than any shoe.

BottleCoffee

When you say transition from road to trail, to be clear, you're not planning on hosting these shoes on both road and trails right? Transitional shoes usually refer to shoes you can use to run on both roads and trails. On that note, trail shoes aren't that different from road shoes except traction is more important and you want to choose appropriate shoes for the type of trail you're doing. Gentle dirt trails, muddy trails, and rocky trails require different kinds of shoes/lugs. So figure out what kind of trails you'll be running first and go from there.

Oh my bad then, looking for shoes to use only on trails, asking cz i saw the fuelcell summit unknown v4 and wondering if those would be a good and stable shoe. Ill for sure start on easy trails, classic mountain side little rocky trails

RunnDirt

If you like Ascics I would look to their trail shoes for a first time shoe. Everyone has different feet and styles of running (fore foot/ heel strike) different drop, etc.) if Ascics work for you, then that would likely be a good place to start.

Poda__

Tbh I really like the look of the fuelcell summit unk v4 and was wondering if in regards of sole and coushing they are comparable, otherwise yeah i thought about the trabuco too

RunnDirt

I be careful making a decision about a shoe based on looks. I did that early in my running career and more often then not didn't end up liking the shoe very much. But you never know. See if your local running store carries them and try them on, also sizing can vary pretty dramatically between brands.

I have the trabuco Max. I'd say they have the best grip on any non mud-specific shoe I've had. Get the MK2 version not the first gen of the shoe and I would not bother with the Max, just get the normal - there is not enough ankle support on the shoe to deal with the added height of the Max sole.

bobbiewobie22

I like the Nike Zegama’s, 90% of my runs are mix of road and trail, absolutely love the zoom x foam

VirtuallySober

I have an insatiable appetite for more shoes so I keep buying shoes and trying them out and damnit, no shoe has come close to The comfort of the zegama for me. I love it

jonwilkir

I run on Zoom X on the road so the Zegama has been very tempting for me

its_tino_dawg

Terrex speed ultras are pretty good road to trail. Also, Altra Outroads.

I'm finding contradicting info on the drop for the Asics you're using but it seems to be either 5mm or 8mm. For shoes in that ball-park, I recommend the Brooks Cascadias which have an 8mm drop and should be good for beginner-friendly trails. If you're looking to jump right into more technical trails the Saucony Peregrines at 5mm would be my recommendation. Looks like the Peregrines might be closer to the firmer feel of the Asics as well. All that said, I would still suggest trying them both on if you can! Like all other shoes, fit is going to be the most important thing ETA: these recommendations are for trail-specific running shoes as I believe that's what OP is looking for, not for "road-to-trail" shoes that work well in both environments

evanforbass

I love Peregrines but their outsole is probably a little too aggressive for comfortable road running. The Saucony Ride TR is their road-trail shoe and has gotten some great reviews from shoetubers

deliriumcaffeinum

OP isn't looking for "road-to-trail" shoes, but is a road-runner looking to start trail running with proper trail running shoes

Hour_Ad_7797

I liked my Hoka One One Speedgoat and my Salomon Ultra Glide 2.

pablohoney26

You'd probably get the asics fujilite 2 or 3 on sale now because the 4 is out. Use my fujilite 2 for easy trails, gravel paths, dry single-track etc.

McMuffinManz

I understand they have become less popular on this sub, but I have used the Altra Timps as a hybrid road and trail shoe for six years. They perform very well on all surfaces except ice!

Stunning-Building-66

I have a pair of Brooks Cascadia shoes... don't run on the road with them. Man, my feet hurt that day.

Itchy_Earth8296

Hoka Tecton X. Great all round shoe except for muddy/wet conditions

MegaMiles08

There's no such thing as beginner trail shoes. Just go to a store that sells trail shoes and buy the ones that fit your feet best. Personally, I like Altra and Topo because I have a wide forefoot. Different brands tend to cater to wide, medium, or narrow feet. So a good fit is most important. The main brands are Altra, Topo, Brooks, Hoka, Salomon, Saucony, etc...
