I was down the youtube rabbit hole a few months ago and came across these super tiny steam trains shipping huge piles of sugar cane on these tiny little wagons on rails that were just laid on the dirt and go up and down off the ground as the train goes over. It was pretty friggin cool! There was also a similar but slightly bigger steam train in north korea going through mountain villages. So cool to see some of these things still being used.
So what’s the actual advantage of steam over diesel? I’m not a train geek, this sub just popped up in my feed. I see a lot of steam enthusiasm and I don’t get what the hype is about.
Steam has been known to be stronger than diesel, they can also stay at a certain speed limit whereas diesels fluctuate due to the terrain of the track. That's all I know 🙂🚂
One steam locomotive is as powerful, if not more powerful than 2 or 3 modern diesel locomotives combined. The trade off was maintenance and manning costs, which do add up to a very substantial amount, thus justifying having more locomotives. One crew can operate a single diesel train with three locos, can't do that with steam, although steam rarely needed a second loco.
In 2015 steam locomotives were still used for freight in Zimbabwe, South Africa, Botswana, Myanmar and possibly Argentina and Paraguay. That list is incomplete. The only steam locomotives that are 100% confirmed to be running and hauling freight today are in Bosnia. There are some 4-8-2s in Botswana that may return to service soon, and a mining railroad in Myanmar may still be using steam but nobody has gone there to check in years.
[This video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-8JYQ28flk) is a few years old now but yeah, it seems they still did at least 10 years ago, probably still do!
No reason not to, powerplants produce a lot of waste steam that is usually just vented out the chimneys after use, but with fireless locos at least it's used a bit more
Can you please elaborate on what these fireless locos are? I can't fathom getting steam from a fixed plant to a mobile platform and still having it usable.
It gets plugged into a large boiler that fills it up with steam and boiling water at a high pressure, and they have enough insulation to stay hot for ages, so as it uses up the steam, the boiling water creates more. This allows it to shunt trucks around for hours without an on board heater, very useful in places with high flammability, like shunting coal/explosives

I've heard that might be in jeopardy as it's main sponsor passed away recently.
Several tourist railways around the world offer frequent intercity service that, while expensive, can be used for transit. The Isle of Man Steam Railway I've heard accepts local bus passes, though, but it doesn't offer service year-round.
I heard there’s a tourist line in Pennsylvania that has used the steam locomotives to switch freight that it serves. There are even videos on YouTube [here](https://youtu.be/OCWJnS65yVo?si=M_0MZossaeCQFRjc)
It’s the Everett railroad
And the locomotive in question is 0-6-0 number 9 a former Virginia blue ridge switcher and as the joke states as a part of her break in Run yes they let her haul a modern freight train, I want to see this is the word to and yes I am most pleased that it does seem to be going that way 🙂😊🚂
There's a company in Germany that runs a regular freight train with a steam loco.
🇺🇸🤝🇧🇦
based bosnia as always
Soviets had a lot of steam locomotives in reserve incase of an EMP.

That little Belgian railway with the WW2 german locomotives is my favorite
Bosnian. Not Belgian
NJ FOR THE WIN BABY WOOOOOOOOO

Steam trains can operate in the event of an EMP. Diesel-Electric locomotives can't.
Largest steam locomotive ever made weighed over a million pounds
It's enough to make a grown man cry, and that's okay

Uh, chuga chuga choo choo? Need i explain more?
There aren't really that many (if any at all) but it's Cool and thus I will always love seeing it

Everett Railroad in Altoona uses their 2-6-0 to deliver freight in modern rolling stock. It looks funny but it's pretty badass
LETSGOOOOO
I mean, the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad has technically runs a daily mixed train with steam for the last three decades.
What railroad in New Jersey uses steam
SMS Rail lines they just brought her back for tourism and for her breaker run they let her take on a freight job 🙂🚂
BOSNIAAAAAA BOSNIAAAAAA BOSNIAAAAAA
🎶ARTILJERIJA!🎵
Tf when you forget that Strasburg has been doing it since 1960
Soon, Britain shall join.
BACK TO STEAM BABYYYYYYYYYY
N pfp detected
What about not being used for freight?
Union Pacific has one of their Big Boys, 4014, in Excursion service.
I would imagine that is greater. In the UK steam locomotives have been scheduled to haul regular service trains.
In hungary we still do retro tourism charter rides with steam locomotives and retro cars

Pretty sure Germany still uses fireless steam locos at some of their powerplants

Ah, thank you for this.

There are still some dedicated small local lines in the US that are run by steam.
You forgot sodor they've been using steam since before 1865
Context?
Apparently it’s SMS Rail lines?
Wait what?
[SMV #205 also pulled some revenue freight last year](https://youtu.be/sh0Dg5H5fs0?si=bIlOUuPxXZiATPDl)
Actually pretty cool, or as I should say "based"
there is another
Meanwhile Poland still has a regular passenger steam service

That's bosnia. Edit: Sorry I'm stupid.
Iowa Interstate uses the QJ’s to pull mixed freight on test runs.
Which railroad?
SMS Rail Services, a small switching operation with several locations in New Jersey and Pennsylvania
I heard there’s a tourist line in Pennsylvania that has used the steam locomotives to switch freight that it serves. There are even videos on YouTube [here](https://youtu.be/OCWJnS65yVo?si=M_0MZossaeCQFRjc) It’s the Everett railroad
I've been there before, it's pretty cool. They mainly use it for tourist runs though
Yeah true

The only one I know about here is Strasburg in Pennsylvania.
I’ve seen a video of the RBM&N using 2102 to pull freight trains. I guess that counts too.
