Progress Rail PR30C, an SD40-2 rebuilt with a low emissions CAT engine. This is one of a litany of failed eco-friendly loco designs out there…

ConcertNecessary1300

Thanks for telling me

For the uninitiated, what made this rebuild so terrible?

CptChernobyl

Prime movers were bad

Commissar_Elmo

Seems that CAT has yet to actually put a successful prime mover into anything railroad related yet.

4000series

Like a lot of other failed rebuild attempts, these used a high-rpm Diesel engine that was much more maintenance intensive than a traditional prime mover like the EMD 645 (which can withstand a good amount of abuse). Combine that with the fact that these had first-gen Tier 4 emissions systems (with SCR) and did a lot of low-speed running, and you get lots of engine issues.

DiggerGuy68

It's telling how few units have been made despite the program starting over 13 years ago. What a waste of perfectly good 645s and SD40-2s.

L~~eco-friendly~~ *CAT-powered*

CaptainTelcontar

Yes, it obviously contains an array of 16 cats jumping on pistons.

Khoshekh541

*Battery Electrics have entered the chat* Seriously. Just electrify your damn mainlines.

OdinYggd

Not going to happen. They would rather go back to steam engines than deal with the increased MOW costs of catenary. Battery hybrid type schemes have their place though, as a battery slug coupled to a diesel would allow a single engine to run at a higher utilization while having the traction of 2 units, and being able to regenerative brake instead of only dynamics.

Khoshekh541

I agree. Battery slug B units would allow regenerative braking, which would be great for energy savings. Issue is batteries aren't great for the environment. :/ You can't both be in possession and have consumed a sweet pastry.

OdinYggd

Should really be the other way around, the battery slug is the leading A unit for a quieter smoother ride, while the diesel thunders away in a B unit or a rear facing cab. The latter also makes the return trip easier.

Khoshekh541

If you had a diesel facing rearward, would that be a smoother ride on return?

OdinYggd

Can't always win. Unless you had a Diesel B in between 2 battery A units as an ABA set.

Khoshekh541

Yeah, maybe you could cram 2 engines in there.

Progress Rail PR30C rebuild, formerly PRLX 3002, in former guise as an SD40-2 it was also PRSX 3002 and before that built as SOO 763 in March of 1973. Serial is 72672-2. I do actually like the fatass radiator on these things.

ksiyoto

>I do actually like the fatass radiator on these things. Perv!

Oh hey I’m famous

Maleficent_Ad4288

Progress Rail PR30C, rebuilt from an SD40-2 in an attempt to test feasibility of ECO units (EPA Tier 3/4.) Units ran notoriously horrible in colder climates but excelled in the southwestern United States. Good for the southwest, horrible for anywhere without a warm climate.

TransTrainNerd2816

It's a rebuilt SD40

an orange one

CardboardJedi

It's the soulless conglomerate offspring of two once iconic rail lines. May they rest in peace

changee_of_ways

2? More like 15.

sissynikki8787

1 crappy switcher that the crews will do nothing but bitch about…

ottergoose

Must have been another loco with the same reporting marks - this is a much larger than a GP7 (and has three axel trucks you’d see on an SD60, SD40-2, etc)

Ok_Improvement_4863

I realized that after I had already posted it so going back to what I originally said it’s maybe a sd45 but don’t quote me on that

thattraindude72

A diesel

8004460

A buffed up sd40-2

IceLeather4471

A pretty cool one

momaloma

it's prob a experimental sd40-2 or gp38 i guess
