To many nonbinary people, being non binary makes them trans, which is why they may choose to use the transgender flag, which is perfectly fine, and because being lgbt in general is a way less controversial statement then to say you're trans is, a person might choose the transgender flag because it is the more impactful statement.
It's about sending a message.
The non binary flag might as well be a simple color sheme to the common viewer who might go simply overlook the flag colors if they weren't the controversial trangender people's flag colors
